A baby kimono (and the story of the pygmee koala)

What can I tell you guys about koalas? They look pretty darn cute, but they're so grumpy! They have bad moods I tell you. They only eat eucalyptus, but only the good stuff. Oh yes, they're fussy eaters. Thanks to the eucalyptus koalas do smell nice! And they sleep a lot, 23 hours a day. Not really leading the rock 'n roll life, now is it?

And I know that koalas live in Australia only. A few years back I was in Brisbane, Australia, and there they have a Koala Sanctuary, Lone Pine. Here they keep rescued koalas. There's a child care section (for the happy toddlers), and old folks home (for the koala pensioners) and a bachelors pad filled with young male koalas making a lot of noise! And they have a nursery, where mummy koalas and baby koalas can chill out. I spotted these two there, Isn't this cute?

But the question is: why am I bothering with Australia and koalas? And what does that baby kimono has to do with anything? Well, this kimono is going to Australia! To the daughter of a friend of mine who just had a baby. No, not a baby-koala! Baby Jonathan! But this kimono is making its way to Brisbane.

I hardly ever make something this small. Bigger is better, that's often my motto. But baby's aren't big, so there you go. This pattern was easy! But if I make one again, I am going to use wider and softer biais tape. I used ready-to-go biais tape from the fabric market, but it wasn't really soft I think and it was a bit too narrow, looking back.

And because you're not allowed to take a koala home, I took home a packet of these little fellas: pygmee koalas. So while the kimono is on its way to Australia, I am stuck at home with the pygmee koala. Look out, it has vicious teeth...

  7. Super!

    Dikke knuffel,

  15. Adorable! I heard koalas sleep so much b/c they're a little drunk on all the eucalyptus, but don't know if that's just a rumor.

  19. The baby kimono is gorgeous. I am with you on pre-made bias tape though - the stuff you make yourself is much better! Koalas are a bit unusual, I will say. And I've rarely seen them in the wild. Baby ones are gorgeous though.
