Back home from Luxembourg

Kerst is voorbij en ik ben weer thuis. Mijn lief en ik vierden de kerstdagen in Luxemburg dit jaar. Nooit eerder vierden we kerst weg van thuis. Het was echt zalig. Geen gedoe, niets moeten, geen gezanik en niet van hot naar her rennen. Gewoon met zijn tweetjes. Heel veel wandelen. Heel veel kletsen. Heel veel uitrusten van een zwaar jaar. En heel veel lekker eten. Precies wat we allebei nodig hadden. Dikke kans dat we volgend jaar heel december laten voor wat het is!

Christmas is over and I am back home. My sweet and me celebrated the holidays away from home: in Luxembourg. We never were away for the holidays and we absolutely loved it. No fuss, no running to and fro, no bla bla. Just the two if us. Lots of walks and hikes. Lots of lovely talks. Lots of sleeping and resting from a tough year. And lots of good food. Exactly what we both needed. I think next year we're leaving for the whole of December!

We hebben een paar nachten in Vianden gelogeerd, tegen de Duitse grens aan. Ontzettend heuvelachtig en mooi. Ik heb sowieso wel wat met heuvels en bergen. Omdat we die als kneuzige Nederlanders nu eenmaal niet hebben (en nee, Limburg telt echt niet). Je kunt me morgen in een heuvelachtig gebied neerzetten en ik verblijf er met plezier (en spierpijn)! Dit was het uitzicht vanuit onze hotelkamer. Niet slecht hè. Dit kasteel heeft overigens ooit aan de Nederlandse kroon toebehoort, maar nu al lang niet meer.

We spent a few days in Vianden, near the German boarder. Really hilly and pretty. I love hills and mountains. I mean, it's all nice being Dutch and all. But Holland is so flat. Out elevation are the speedbumps on the road and I ain't kidding about that. Just leave me in the middle of a mountainous or gilly area and I'll love it there, despite my calves getting painful! This was the view from our hotel room. Not too shabby huh. This castle used to belong to Dutch royalty, but not for a while now.

Op eerste kerstdag maakten we een hele mooie, lange wandeling. Door de heuvels bij Vianden. Echt heel mooi en heel stil. Dit uitgehouwen kappelletje vond ik wel wat. Ik ken, als Brabants kind, toch wel de kapelletjes overal langs de kant van de weg. Maar zo uitgehouwen uit de heuvel is wel 'Lourdes' achtig toch? En ja, die biddende tuinkabouter erbij was redelijk hilarisch... De glühwein na deze wandeling smaakte trouwens ook prima!

On Christmas day we took a really long hike through the hills of Vianden, oh so pretty and quiet. Beautiful. I loved the little shrine there in the hill. Where I grew up, in the South of Holland, it's pretty common to see Maria shrines by the side of the road, but this one in the hills. It's a bit like 'Lourdes' isn't it? And yes, the praying garden gnome at Mary's feet is pretty hilarious... after this long walk we had some glühwein that tasted pretty good.

En een bezoekje aan Luxemburg Stad mocht ook niet ontbreken. Zet de stad op je lijstje als stedentrip bestemming! Want het is echt supermooi. Er is een boven- en benedenstad en je kunt van de één naar de ander wandelen via allerlei kruip-door-sluip-door paadjes, trappetjes en parkjes. Bovendien zijn er een aantal erg gezellige pleinen en massa's winkels! En euh, vanwege het lage belastingtarief kun je in Luxemburg héél voordelig shoppen. Ik heb geen foto gemaakt van onze overvolle auto toen we vandaag naar huis reden. Schaam! We gaan voor Luxemburg Stad nog wel een keer in de herkansing, want het lijkt ons helemaal leuk als alle terrasjes buiten staan en vol zitten.

We also visited the capital: Luxembourg City. This is a really great city trip destination! It's gorgious. There's an upper and lower city and you can walk from one to the other by little stairs, parcs and lanes. Good fun. The city also has some lovely squares and shops, lots of shops. And erm, because the taxes are low in Luxembourg you can shop till you drop and not lose an arn and leg whilst doing so. It's a shame I didn't take a ic of our oh so full car when we drove back home today. Oh, the shame. We're going back to Luxembourg in spring or summer for sure as we really want to see it when all the terraces are out and the squares are packed with people.
