Fat quarter sewing: hot water bottle cover tutorial

Hebben jullie in de winter ook van die koude voeten 's nachts? Ik wel dus. En om de kuiten van mijn arme lief te ontlasten (want daar wil ik mijn ijsklontjes, zoals hij ze noemt, nog wel eens tegenaan leggen), leg ik gewoon een kruik in bed. Dan zijn mijn pootjes zo opgewarmd. Maar nu ligt mijn kruik al jaren heel onelegant in een oude kussensloop in bed. Dat kan anders! Leuker en mooier! Een tutorial...

That warms my poor cold feet right up! But, my hot water bottle has been wrapped in an old pillow cover for years. So unelegant. I gan do better than that! This could be so much more fun. So here it is: a tutorial...

Hot water bottle cover tutorial

Wat heb je nodig?
Het mooie aan dit patroon is dat je maar heel weinig materiaal nodig hebt om het te maken:
1 fat quarter zachte stof (bijvoorbeeld flanel, ribfluweel of velours)
2 restjes stof van ongeveer 25 cm bij 5 cm

Een halve meter lint
Eventueel een halve meter biaisband

Bijpassend garen

Al je naaispullen.

Naadtoeslag: precies de breedte van je voetje, tenzij anders aangegeven.

What do you need?
The great thing about this pattern is that you need very little material:

1 fat quarter of soft fabric (like flannel, rib cord or vlours)

2 scraps of fabric of about 25 cm by 5 cm

Half a yard of ribbon\
Optional: half a yard of biastape
Matching thread

All your sewing gear.

Seam allowance: exactly one sewing foot, unless stated otherwise.

Je patroon tekenen/ drawing your pattern

Pak er een groot vel papier bij, laat alle lucht uit je kruik lopen en leg hem op het vel papier. Aan de zijkanten en de onderkant teken je 2,5 breder dan de kruik, aan de bovenkant 3 centimeter. Je hebt nu een rechthoek getekend, maar laat je kruik nog even liggen! Teken nu 2 centimeter waar de 'nek' van de kruik begint. Belangrijk voor straks!

Knip de rechthoek uit en knip twee van deze rechthoeken uit je stof en neem de 2 cm van de 'nek' over op de verkeerde kant van je stof. 

Take a large sheet of paper, deflate your hot water bottle and put it flat on the paper. On both sides and the bottom, you draw 2.5 cm wider than the measurements of the hot water bottle. On the top you draw 3 cm extra. Now you drew a rectangle, but don't move your hot water bottle just yet! Draw 2 cm of the beginning of the 'neck' of your hot water bottle. This is important for later on. 

Cut out the rectangle and place it on your fabric. Cut out two of the rectangles from your fat quarter and copy the 2 cm of the 'neck' on the wrong side of yout pattern pieces.

De tunnels maken/ making the tunnels

Neem de twee repen stof en vouw de korte kanten 1 cm om en strijk plat. Vouw daarna de lange kanten 1 cm om en strijk plat. Leg een reep op je naaimachine en stel hem in op een grote zigzagsteek. Zig zag beide lange kanten vast. Herhaal voor de tweede reep.

Take your two fabric scraps. Fold 1 cm of each short side to the wrong side of the fabric and press. Nou fold 1 cm of each long side to the wrong side of the fabric and press well with your iron. Now put  one fabric strip on your sewing machine and take a large zig zag stitch. Zig zag each long side of the strip. Repeat for the second strip.

Pak je twee lappen stof erbij. Je hebt aan beide kant de 2 cm van de 'nek' op je stof getekend, toch? Zo niet? Snel doen! Plaats je zojuist genaaide reepje precies op de 2 centimeter en zorg dat je aan beide kant nog ruimte hebt, minimaal een centimeter. Naai de reepjes vast, alleen langs de lange kanten, vlak langs het randje. Herhaal voor je andere lap stof.

take your two pattern pieces. Now, you drew the 2 cm of the 'neck' on your pattern pieces, right? If not, do it now. Place the tunnel that you've just sewn right on top of the 2 cm part of the fabric and leave some room on both sides, at least 1 cm on each side. Sew the tunnel pieces (only the long sides of the tunnel piece) to your fabric and sew right along the edge of the tunnel piece. Repeat this for your other piece of fabric.

De bodem maken/ making the bottom

Om mooie ronde hoekjes te maken, pak je een bordje en teken je een afgeronde hoek langs de twee onderste hoeken van de twee rechthoeken. Knip langs de randen.

Vouw de ronde hoeken in twee om het midden te vinden en teken een streep van 2,5-3 cm: als je je kruik graag héél vol doet is het aan te raden om 3 cm te tekenen, maar ben jij al blij met een beetje warm water tegen je voeten, houd het dan op 2,5 cm.

To create nice round corners, take a sandwich plate and draw nice round corners along the bottoms of both your rectangle fabric pieces. Cut them out. 

Fold the round corners in two to find the middle and draw a line of 2.5 or 3 cm. If you like to fill up your water bottle: make it three. If you're a person who's happy with just a little warm water in the bottle, make it 2.5 cm.

Vouw de hoek dubbel en pin vast, zodat het streepje bovenop zit. Stik vast op ongeveer een voetje van de rand. Doe dit voor de twee hoeken van beide onderkanten van je stukken stof.

Fold the corner in half and pin, so the line you drew is on top. Stitch at about one sewing foot. Do this for the 4 bottom corners of your pieces.

Het 'puntje' dat je nu aan de binnenkant van je stof hebt, strijk je even naar links of rechts. Strijk het maar goed plat en doe dit voor alle vier de ronde hoeken.

The 'dart' that is now on the inside of the fabric you iron to either the right or left. Press well and do this for all four round corners.

De kruikenzak naaien/ Sewing the hot water bottle cover

Voordat je de patroondelen met de goede kant tegen elkaar legt en vast speldt, is het een goed idee om even rondom beide patroondelen te zigzaggen, zo gaat de stof niet rafelen. Vervolgens speld je de patroondelen op elkaar (zorg dat de tunneltjes precies op elkaar liggen!) en stik rondom, maar let op de twee cm van de tunneltjes laat je vrij en daar stik je niet overheen.

Before you pin the two pieces together, it's wise to zigzag around both pattern pieces to keep the fabtic from fraying later. After that you pin the two fabric pieces right sides together (make sure the tunnels are on top of each other) and stitch all around, except at the 2 cm where the tunnels are!

Daarna strijk je de naden open. De opening waar je niet hebt genaaid, zit nu precies naast de tunneltjes!

Press open the seams. The openings where you didn't sew are not right beside the tunnels.

Biaisband langs de bovenrand/ Bias tape along the top 

Wil je biasband langs de bovenrand? Pak hem er maar bij! Vouw de biaisband helemaal open en plaats de bovenkant van de biaisband tegen de bovenrand aan en speld helemaal rondom vast. Stik nu vlak langs de rand. Haal de spelden er uit en vouw de biasband dubbel en sla hem daarbij om de rand heen. Er is nu een net randje te zien aan beide kanten van de rand. Stik rondom.

Het vastzetten van biaisband is best een precies werkje. Ik vind deze tutorial over biaisband heel handig als je nog niet zo vaak met biaisband hebt gewerkt. Op Youtube zijn ook allerlei handige filmpjes te vinden. Maar vind je het te lastig? Geen punt! Vouw dan ongeveer 1 centimeter naar binnen en strijk even goed plat, daarna stik je dit randje gewoon vast.

Wanna use your biastape? Go for it! Fold it all the way open and place the top of the biastape along the top edge of the hot water bottle cover, right sides together. Pin all the way around and stitch. Then remove the pins and fold the tape over the edge to the wrong side. Now you have a pretty piece of tape on both sides! Stitch all around.

Stitching biastape is a rather precise job. I find that this tutorial is great if you haven't worked with biastape a lot. On Youtube there are also a lot of movies that will come in handy. But if you find this too difficult, don't worry. You can also do without biastape. Just fold about 1 cm of the edge to the wrong side and press firmly. Now just stitch along the edge.

De linten inrijgen/ adding the ribbons 

Neem je lint (ik gebruikte biastape dat ik nog had liggen) en knip het doormidden. Zorg ervoor dat je aan beide zijden van de zak zo'n 7-10 cm aan lint over hebt.

Take your ribbon (I used some biaistape that I had laying around) and cut in half. Make sure you have about 7-10 cm on each side of the cover.

Steek een veiligheidsspeld door het uiteinde van het stukje lint en wriemel het door het tunneltje heen. Strek het koordje strak en zorg dat je aan beide kanten 7-10 cm hebt hangen. Wriemel nu ook het andere koordje door het andere tunneltje met de veiligheidsspeld.

Put a safety pin to the end of your ribbon and wriggle it through the tunnel. Make sure that 7 - 10 cm of the ribbon are on both sides of the cover when the ribbon is through. Now take your other ribbon and wriggle it trhough the other tunnel using the safety pin.

Doe je kruik in de kruikenzak.../ Place your hot water bottle in the cover...

Trek de lintjes aan.../ Pull the ribbons...

En je kruikenzak is klaar!/ And your hot water bottle cover is finished!

Helemaal geweldig toch! Zo gemakkelijk en het ziet er zo veel beter uit dan die oude kussensloop. Ja toch! Ik hoop dat jullie het lukt om er één te maken. Mochten jullie vragen hebben... jullie weten me te vinden.
