Free crochet pattern: market bag in linen stitch

From January 1st 2016 it's forbidden for shop owners in The Netherlands to give out plastic bags for free. Not a minute too soon if you ask me, as the plastic soup floating our dear oceans is thick enough. I make a habbit of always carrying a (hand made, of course!) bag with me in my handbag or workbag, to avoid having to take a plastic bag when I have to hop by the supermarket or drugstore unplanned. It also seemed fun to crochet a market bag for a change, so here's the free pattern!

Optioneel: 4 flinke knopen.

What do you need?
I made this market bag using Scheepjes Bloom. This is a very strong and bold mercerized cotton. It doesn't stretch and is great for making items that will be used heavily, like for schlepping groceries around. It also doesn't split, so it's a yarn for quick and easy hooking.

I have made two versions of this bag, one in pink and green tones, and one in grey-petrol tones. For both bags you'll need 6 colors.

The pink and green version:
2 balls of red (no. 406)
1 ball of bright pink (no. 408)

1 ball of soft pink (no. 409)
1 ball of offwhite (no. 423)
1 ball of light green (no. 413)
1 ball of dark green (no. 412)

The blue and grey bag:
2 balls of petrol (no. 416)
1 ball of lightblue (no. 419)

1 ball of yellow (no. 414)
1 ball of offwhite (no. 413)
1 ball of light grey (no. 422)
1 ball of dark grey (no. 421)

You'll be using a 5mm hook. You'll also need stitchmarkers (if you like using them), scissors and a needle for weaving in ends. Optional: 4 large buttons.

Kom hem gerust even laten zien op Facebook!

And that's it, you're done! You've made a very fine bog bottom market bag. Go you!

So what do you say, do you like the red one or the blue one better?

What colors would you pick?

  13. Love your bags. Thank you for sharing the pattern. I have 2 questions;
    1. For the straps, are the instructions to go all the way around, or turn at the end of the row. Also, what don't see instructions for straps, row 4?
    2. I seem to have a line, where the rounds end and begin?

    Thnak you
