Just a little practical

Pinnen bijvoorbeeld, of internetbankieren. Fantastisch, als het werkt. Maar als het niet werkt. Doffe ellende, jullie snappen wat ik bedoel.

When things work, the way they're supposed to worke I am all for it. Like using the atm or internet banking. It's great, if it works. If it doesn't, dear or dear... how annoying. You know what I'm talking about right.

However, what I don't get is: why quit something that works really well and that serves a lot of people well? I am talking about Google Friend Connect: you know the 'followers counter' on the sidebar of most blogs. A very easy way of following blogs. It works great and I have been a ver happy user of Google Friend Connect.

Zonde hoor.

But Google is pulling the plug, March 1st it's the end for Google Friend Connect. I believe that people using a 'blogspot' blog can still use it after March 1st, but people using Wordpress or another platform for blogging have to find another way to follow blogs. Such a shame, isn't it?

And that's why I am thinking about new ways to follow blogs. In the sidebar of my blog you've seen Linky Followers. That's a very nice and new way of following blogs, and it's completely free and very easy. Isn't that nice. Right under there you see that you can also follow my blog via e-mail. And of course you can chose your own RSS reader to follow blogs with.

Anyway, I do think that no matter in which direction Google walks... we'll find a good alternative to follow each others blog. I mean, that's why we are creative women!

Granny stripe edging: a tutorial

Granny stripe blanket - edging tutorial

Crocheting a granny square blanket is fun! And I found out that crocheting a granny stripe blanket is also fantastic! Though one thing is tough: making the edge along the granny stripe blanket. 'Cause along the 'long' side of the blanket you don't have thos handy speaces between 'grann clusters' like you have with granny square blankets. It took me a little while to get it right, but I got there!

And because I was so relieved to have finally gotten it right, I just made a tutorial out of it. So crochet along if you are just about to finish your granny stripe blanket.

Just to be clear: I am not claiming this pattern as my own. It's just my own variety on existing stitches and I just thought you'd like to see how I did this. Just follow my easy peasy 5 step plan.

Granny stripe how to

Stap 1 - Step 1

Make a granny stripe blanket (or a small tester to try out the pattern) according to Lucy's or Karins tutorial.

Granny stripe edging tutorial

Stap 2 - Step 2

Start with a new colour in a space between 2 granny clusters. Chain 3 (counts as one double crochet), crochet 2 more dc's in the same space. *Chain 1 and crochet 3 dc's in the next space*. Repeat this till you get to the corner. Into the corner you crochet 3 dc's 1 ch 3 dc's.

Now you're at the difficult 'long side' of the blanket. If you look well you see a 'space' between the seperate rows of granny clusters. In this space you crochet your 3 dc clusters. Between clusters you chain 1.

How to crochet a edging for a granny stripe blanket

Stap 3 - Step 3

Start a new colour and chain 1 (counts as 1 sc). Chain 3 and place a sc between the spaces of the granny clusters of the last round. In the corner you crochet 1 sc ch 3 1 sc.

Granny stripe edge

Stap 4 - Step 4

Start a new colour in a 3 ch loop of the last round. Chain 3 (counts as 1 dc) and put 2 dc's in the same space. Crochet 3 dc's in the next loop. Beware! Don't put ch 1 between the 3 dc clusters! In the corners you crochet 3 dc's 1 ch 3 dc's.

Niet zo moeilijk, toch? Nou, je bent er bijna!
Easy does it, right? Well, you're almost there.

Tutorial: granny stripe edging

Stap 5 - Step 5

Start a new colour and place a sc in every stitch of the last round. In the corners you crochet 3 sc's.

And that's how you can give a pretty granny stripe blanket the edging it deserves.

Reversible tote bags in the blogosphere!

You know what I find weird? That allover blogland I see bags made with my reversible tote bag totorial. Now, I hear you all think: 'Well dûh you silly cow, why else would you post a tutorial on your blog?' Okay, that's a solid point. I am just seriously so surprised to read blogs that have pics of 'my bag' on there saying 'Hey, I made a new bag and used the tutorial by Happy in Red. Really, it amazes me.

I've seen some really cute reversible tote bags cross my path. I love the way these creatives have combined their fabrics and how they gave their own twist to my pattern. Just fantastic! So I really want to share some of these creations with you, to say thank you to their talented creators!

Elisanna was the first who stitched up two (!) of my bags. Look at those fabrics!

And look at Oontje GO. The tote is very unisex!

Lotte pimped her tote with buttons, Soraya made one that can be taken to the pool and hANdgehaakt, Tante Nannie, Jo Chapaeu en Joppe made wonderful reversible totes.

Thank you ladies!!

Are you planning to make a reversible tot bag using my tutorial? Or maybe you already have? Come on over and put a picture of it in the Flickr Group that I put up. I promse and ooooh and aaaah allover it.

Fabulous granny stripe blanket ta-daaa!

Granny squares are just great, I think we all agree on that. But it was time for a bit of variety in my crochet. So I tried the granny stripe. More or less invented by Lucy from Attic 24, though I found the Dutch tutorial by Karin a bit more useful for me.

And this is the result, I am SO incredibly proud. It really turned out lovely, if I may say so myself.

Once you get the hang of the pattern it's just a matter of go go go and you're done really fast. This blanket is 90 cm by 120 cm.

I chose light blue, gray and aqua for the main colours, which really reminded me of the sea. And of course I needed to add some bold reds and pinks. This stripy pattern really turned out well, I have to say. I am also very pleased about the edging.

Two weeks ago I started this blanket and now it is finished. Kinda fast, right? What can I say, I blame the lack of good tv shows. ;-)

And together with my tulips and roses this really made me sooo happy. I am really smitten with my granny stripe blanket!

Thank you Sugar Bee Crafts and Creative Jewish Mom for featuring my granny stripe blanket!

Blissful Sunday and Give Away Winner

Last week has been a great and wonderful Happy in Red-week, really. There were so many nice comments on my Blogiversary, 'cause I was one year old. My blog I mean. And I promise, I'll keep on blogging a while longer. And you sent me lovely comments on my reversible tote bag tutorial. And te first super sewers already put their creation on the Flickr Group. So proud of that and them.

And I bought myself some springflowers. Every year around February, I get so restless. What is taking spring so long? I think it has to do with the fact that I am from the south of Holland where I used to celebrate Carnaval around this time of year. And when Carnaval was over, then there would be spring! Hence the spring flowers.

Happy Blogiversary Give Away

~This Give Away is now closed. Stay tuned though, in March there'll be another Give Away!~

Exactly ayear ago I quietly started this little blog. I took some pictures, wrote a little story and just sat there, quietly waiting. And now, 1 year later? It's Happy in Reds 1 year Blogiversay. And I have to say, I feel quite at home in the world of blogs.

I started to learn how to crochet and bought a sewing machine (I had many fights with the latter, but now we get along quite well). I made loads, didn't I? Bags, blankets, softies, the lot!

En jullie reageerden. Massaal!

And you left comments. Loads of them! A year ago I was clueless about followers and now I am so proud and honoured that you all come and visit my blog and leave such lovely comments.

And to thank you for such a great year, I am giving something away. Yes, you heard it right: A GIVE AWAY!

Twee superleuke boekjes van Cath Kidston: Make and Sew met daarin superleuke projecten, zoals sloffen, t-shirts, tafelkleden en mobils vol vogeltjes.

Two great booklets by Cath Kidston: Make and Sew full with fantastic projects like slippers, t-shirts, table cloths and little bird ornaments.

And because those booklets have to get sent, I am also giving away the reversible tote bag that I made for my tutorial, since so many of you commented on that!

Want to win this all?
1) Just leave me a comment here

2) Extra chance: be a follower or become a follower
3) Extra chance: share this Gove Away (on your blog or on Twitter or Facebook)

Next Sunday (Feb 19th) I'll let you know who the winner is!

Happy Blogiversary to me!!

This Give Away is now closed. Stay tuned though, in March there'll be another Give Away!

Tote bag and kindle case

The reversible virus really caught on to me, reversible tote bag wise I mean. In Brussels I caught this beautiful fabric from Anna Maria Horner, I really think it's stunning. And all of a sudden I had an idea for a great and practical lining for this bag. And there was also a lucky reciever: a friend who recently gave me some gorgious fabrics from Japan.

But what she really wanted was a kindle case. But of course! I used a Michael Miller fabric for the outside and a happy red and white polka dot fabric for the lining.

Very cute, is it not?

Win win!

For the lining (but this can of course also be the outside, gotta love the flexibility there) I want mad with biais tape. I bought some red biais for the pocket (which holds the kindle case quite well) and also used the tape for the straps. Really goes with the Anna Maria Horner fabric. Swing when you're winning!

And for that cherry on the cake: my friend was really happy with her presents!
Happy weekend everyone!!

Thank you Creative Jewish Mum, Organise and decorate everything, Jaqs Studio, 30 handmade days and Social Salutions for featuring my bag!

I had the day off, I switched it for my regular day off (on Fridays) and I found myself with a day off on an unexpeted day. So, what do I do?

Of course I totally got lost in my new crochet project: a granny stripe blanket this time. With lovely glorious grey, blue and green colours. But of course the name of my blog wouldn't do if I didn't add some bold stripes in between. I love how the pattern is working out. To be continued...

And I effordlessly gave into my yarn addiction. I had no choice, seriously. When I saw these great colours at my local shop (for less then €1! a ball) I instantly had an idea for another blanket. It was stronger than myself, honestly. And for that price, ha! See how easily I justified it?

And if you seriously thought that I would move from the couch, you're mistaken! 'Cause the new issue of Flow magazine was laying within reach, so I just had to go and read that. Those darlings at Flow had written a feature about one of my favorite writers of all times: Annie M.G. Schmidt. You know, when I grow up I want to be just like her, I always had that dream. Didn't know that about me, did ya!

There were some great recipes too in the magazine. Mouth watering, really. Maybe I'll make one this weekend, unless ice skating will take my mind off it...

And a great feature about chocolate. Mmm, chocolate. Yum. We don't have any in the house. Hm, seems like I'll be getting off the couch today afterall!

Tomato-chili relish recipe

A year and a half ago me and my love were in Hunter Valley, Australia. One of the best wine areas in Australia. Other than buying some bottles of wonderful reds, whites and roses we also bought a jar of tomato-chili relish at the Tintilla Estate, one of the vinyards of Hunter Valley.

Gewoon eens proberen!

And guess what, a year and a half later my jar of yummy relish is all empty. And flying back to Australia... well, my bank account is disagreeing. So, I had no other choice but to try and make this relish myself. Relish was new to me, but now I think it's great with meat or fish dishes, with salads or just as a dip, like salsa. Seriously, give it a go!

I am kinda proud to tell you guys that I managed to make a relish that tastes exactly like my Australian relish. I'm so chuffed. I wrote down the recipe immediately, so you can make it to. Scroll down for the recipe in English and get cookin'!

Tomaten-chili relish
Wat heb je nodig?
7 flinke tomaten
1 appel
2 uien
1 tl chilipoeder (of een klein gesnipperd heet pepertje)
100 gram witte of bruine suiker
100 ml azijn
1 tl mosterdpoeder
1 tl currypoeder
Een beetje bloem
Lege glazen potjes, schoon gewassen
Klaar?

Tomato - chili relish
What do you need?
7 large tomatoes
1 apple
2 onions
1 tsp of chilip flakes (or a small chopped chili)
100 gram of white or brown sugar
100 ml vinegar
1 tsp mustard powder
1 tsp curry powder
a little bit of flower
Some glass jars, washed clean.

Ready? Let's chop and cook!

Peel the skin of the tomatoes (cut a little cross into the tomato and put them into boiling water for about a minute) and chop them. Peel and chop the onions finely. Peel the apple, remove the core and dice.

Put one table spoon of olive oil in a frying pan (with teflon!) and put in the chili flakes and onions. Let them simmer and geft soft for 8 minutes. Then put everything into the pan: tomatoes, apple, sugar, vinegar, mustard poweder and curry powder.

Stir everything and let it come to the boil. Let it boil for 1 minute then turn the fire low. Now let it all simmer for about one hour.

In the meantime sterilise your glass jars by cooking them in a pan with boiling water for 10 minutes, then leave them to dry and cool upside down on a clean tea towel.

If you find the relish a bit ti thin or runny, just add one or two tea spoons of flower after 45 minutes. After one hour of simmering, the relish is done! Put the relish into the jars, put the lids on firmly and put the jars upside down for about 15 minutes and let them cool down. Your relish is done, woohoo!

There is about enough for 4 medium jars.

I really love relish with salads, a bbq or just to dip. So give it a go!
