Free sewing pattern: kitchen apron

Aw, wat een leuke reacties heb ik gekregen op de workshop van afgelopen weekend. Sinds dinsdag (toen ik weer aan de buis gekluisterd zat, afgestemd op BBC2) ben ik er trouwens van overtuigd dat ik nog lang niet geschikt ben om deel te nemen aan een Nederlandse equivalent van The Great British Sewing Bee, mocht die ooit komen. Ik denk namelijk niet dat ze daar naar kandidaten zoeken die leven onder het motto: ik doe ook maar wat. Maar de schort uit het boek, die is gelukt. En ik mag het patroon met jullie delen.

Aw, I've gotten some great comments about last weekends workshop. Since last Tuesday (when I was glued to the telly, watching BBC2) I am quite convinced that I am completely not suited to take part in a Dutch version of The Great British Sewing Bee, if they'll ever make one. 'Cause I am pretty sure they're not looking for candidates who're just pottering about. But the apron from the book: I did it! And I am allowed to share the pattern with you.

Dit patroon komt uit het boek Naaien & Stikken, de Nederlandse vertaling van het boek van The Great British Sewing Bee. Is het geen plaatje? Er staat ook een simpele versie van dit schort in het boek. Maar er staan nog veel meer tijdloze patronen in, van kussen met geplooide randjes tot hemdjes en jurkjes. Voor zowel beginners als gevorderden.

Mijn moeder kocht in de jaren '70 een kookboek waaruit ze nu nog steeds kookt en waaruit ik inmiddels ook wat favorieten heb geplukt. Dat kookboek is nog altijd actueel. En ik ben er oprecht van overtuigd dat Naaien & Stikken zo'n boek zou kunnen zijn voor naaisters. Zo'n boek dat je koopt, omdat je wel oren hebt naar tijdloze patronen met fatsoenlijke uitleg en duidelijke foto's van alle technieken. En dat je er vervolgens door de jaren heen bij pakt, uitleent of doorgeeft.

This pattern is from the Dutch translation from the Great British Sewing Bee book. Isn't it adorable? There's also a simple version of an apron in the book. But you'll find so many timeless sewing patterns, like ruffled pillows, camisoles and dresses, for both beginning as advamced sewers.

My mum bouhgt a cookbook in the 70's fork which she still cooks some of our favorite dishes that I also cook now I'm married. The cookbook is as topical as ever. And I am pretty convinced that the Great British Sewing Bee book is a sewing book that will stand the test of time. One of those books that you'll buy when you're just starting to sew, then make lots of things from it through the years and maybe even pass it on. It has clear instructions and pictures. 

Maar goed, het schort dus. In het boek vind je ook patroonvellen, maar in het patroon dat ik met jullie deel, zul je eerst even aan de slag moeten met ruitjespapier voor patronen. Maar moeilijk uittekenen is het niet. Gewoon tellen en de puntjes met elkaar verbinden en dan kom je er wel.

Voor dit schort heb je canvas of stevig katoen met een print nodig. De stof die ik voor mijn schort gebruikte, komt bij Textielstad vandaan. Ben je trouwens op zoek naar vrolijk canvas katoen, dan kan ik je ook Ikea van harte aanraden! Maar Noeks heeft ook een leuke collectie. Dan heb je contrast stof nodig (ook katoen of canvas) voor de banden en een flink aantal meters biaisband. Dat van mij was glansband, maar ik zou gewoon katoen biaisband kopen (dat glansband was veel te glibberig en was erg irritant om te naaien).

But alright, the apron pattern. I have to say: it's in Dutch. However, the pictures of the instructions are pretty clear so I'll bet you'll be able to work it out. In the book you'll find pattern pieces, but the pattern that I'm sharing requires you to do some drawing on graph pattern paper. But it's not hard, I promise. Just count the boxes and connect the dots.

For the apron you'll need printed canvas or heavy weight cotton. The green printed fabric from my apron is by Textielstad, but if you're looking for some budget sewing I can highly recommend Ikea for their canvas fabrics. Then you'll need some solid colourd heavy weight cotton or canvas for the straps and meters and meters of bias tape. I was using silky shiny biastape for my apron, but I wouldn't recommend that, far too slippery. Stick with cotton I say.

Being a little sewing bee

Kijken jullie op dinsdagavond ook zo graag naar The Great British Sewing Bee? Wat geweldig, dat er gewoon een heel televisieprogramma helemaal over naaien gaat! Toen ik een aantal weken geleden in Londen was, had ik echt het idee dat naaien en zelf maken zo ontzettend leeft in Engeland. Bij elk warenhuis heb je een hele afdeling vol stoffen, wol en fournituren. De steden hebben goedlopende wol- en stoffenwinkels en er zijn zelfs wolcafés. Daar komen we in Nederland toch een beetje sneu vanaf.

Do you guys watch The Great British Sewing Bee on BBC every Tuesday? I do, and I love the show. I think it's so wonderful that there's an entire television show entirely dedicated to sewing. When I was in London a few weeks ago it became clear to me how popular crafts and home making have always been (and still are) in the UK. Literally every departmentstore has its own DIY floor, filled with fabrics, yarns and notions. There are busy wool and yarn shops everywhere and even knitting cafés. The Netherlands seem so boring compared to that.

En ik ben niet de enige die er zo over denkt. Bij Uitgeverij Tirion Creatief willen ze er alles aan doen om zelf maken, naaien en haken weer heel gewoon te maken. Niet alleen geeft zelf maken heel veel voldoening (want veel leuker en origineler dan iets uit de winkel), zelf maken is ook veel socialer en gezelliger. Daarom was ik zo ontzettend blij om te horen dat Tirion het boek van The Great British Sewing Bee heeft aangekocht en vertaald. Een ware naai-bijbel met 30 tijdloze, prachtige patronen en duidelijke naaitips en -technieken met heldere foto's en uitleg. In het Nederlands heet het Naaien & Stikken.

And I'm not the only one who feels that way. Over at Dutch publisher Tirion Ceatief they really make an efford to bring sewing, crochet and DIY back into the Dutch households. Because making something yourself isn't just much more satisfying than buying (the quality is often better and you'll wear something one of a kind), but making things yourself is much more fun and sociable. That's why I was so thrilled that Tirion has published the Dutch version of The Great British Sewing Bee book, in Dutch it's called Naaien & Stikken and it has 30 timeless patterns in there. En als ik zeg dat zelf maken veel socialer is, dan meen ik het ook! Want afgelopen zaterdag was ik bij Textielstad in Tilburg en woonde ik een workshop bij om een patroon te maken uit Naaien & Stikken.

Ik heb jarenlang in Tilburg gewoond (daar studeerde ik) en dus scheurde ik mijn kleine rode autootje in één streep naar mijn oude flat. Oeps! Tijdens mijn tijd in Tilburg naaide en haakte ik nog niets en wist ik niet van het bestaan van Textielstad af. Zo zonde! Bij binnenkomst heb ik geloof ik heel hard 'Wow' geroepen. Want welke stof je ook zoekt, bij Textielstad vind je het. En nog veel meer: ritsen, band, kant, knopen. In alle kleuren, vormen en maten. Ik was danig onder de indruk. (Ze hebben trouwens ook een webshop, mocht je niet in de buurt wonen).

And if I say that making things is much more social, I mean it. 'Cause last Saturday I went to Textielstad in Tilburg (in the South on The Netherlands) and participated in a workshop making one of the patterns in the book. So much fun.

I used to live in Tilburg when I went to college there. That's why me and my little red car raced towards my old flat without even giving it a second thought. Oops! When I was living in Tilburg I had no clue about the existence of Textielstad, because I wasn't crocheting and sewing back then. Such a shame, I think now. Because when I entered I apparently said 'Wow' really loudly. But then, it was so impressive. Every type of fabric was available there and they had all types and colours of zippers, notions, buttons and much much more. They also have a webshop. 

De workshop zelf was een klein feest van herkenning. Ik heb zoveel naaisters de hand kunnen schudden wiens blog ik letterlijk al jaren lees. Als je al heel lang een bepaalde blog leest, is het net alsof je iemand al een beetje kent. Zo voelt dat althans, maar dat betekent nog niet dat je de zin 'Oh, jij hebt zulke schattige katten' zo maar tegen een nietsvermoedende Vlaamse blogster kunt roepen. Ahem, sorry Bij gebrek aan beter! Ja ja, aan sociale etiquette geen gebrek bij mij...

The workshop was a little party in itsself. I met so many people who'se blogs I've been reading for years. After reading those blogs for so long, it sometimes feels like you really know someone. But the fact that it feels like that, doesn't mean that that's the reality. So blurting out 'Oh, I think you have the cutest cats!' to an unsuspecting Flemmish blogger wasn't maybe the best idea I've ever had. So sorry Bij gebrek aan beter! Yes, I am truely the queen of social etiquette.

Uit Naaien & Stikken maakten we deze schort. Gelukkig zat ik tegenover Marieke (zij, van Van Marieke) die altijd een stapje voorliep op mij zodat ik altijd even kon spieken, én had Textielstad genoeg ware naaiwonders rondlopen die ons van zeer handige tips voorzagen. Het groene exemplaar is van mij, wonderwel gelukt. Maar ik laat hem over een paar dagen pas zien... dan heb ik namelijk nog een leuke verrassing voor jullie.

We made this apron from the book. Luckily I was seated opposite Marieke (who owns the shop Van Marieke) who was always one step ahead of me so I could peek what she was doing ánd some sewing talents from Textielstad gave us mighty fine sewing advice. That's why my green apron turned out pretty well. Anyway, I won't show it yo you just yet. Wait a couple of days please, 'cause I have a wonderful surprise planned for you.
