Vintage crochet blanket inspiration

Serieus, wat is er nu leuker dan heel Pinterest afspeuren op zoek naar mooie vintage gehaakte dekens als inspiratie voor nieuwe gehaakte dekens? Ik betrap me erop dat ik dit echt wel een paar keer per week doe. Mijn Pinterest boards staan ook vol met beauties. Te leuk om niet te delen!
Honestly, what's better than to search Pinterest for beautiful vintage blankets as an inspiration for new crocheted balnkets to be? I catch myself looking for vintage crochet blankets quite a lot and my Pinterest boards are filled with some real beauties. Too pretty not to share.
Ik hou-ou van het haken van zeshoekjes! Is gewoon weer eens wat anders dan vierkantjes of ripples en je krijgt zo'n leuk effect als je ze aan elkaar haakt. Op Etsy vond ik dit vintage hexagon patroon. Wat een leukerd zeg!
I am in love with crochet hexagons. They're a welcome distraction from squares and ripples and they make up such a nice bunch when you crochet them together. Anyway, on Etsy I found this beautiful pattern for a vintage hexagon blanket. Très pretty.
Ook op Etsy kwam ik deze prachtige ripple stitch deken tegen. Helaas al verkocht, maar niet getreurd. Met deze duidelijke tutorial en de juiste kleurtjes garen kom je denk ik een heel eind. Je kunt deze 12 kleuren kopen van bijvoorbeeld Stylecraft DK of Scheepjes Colour Crafter en gaan! Moet goed komen toch?
This fabulous vintage ripple stitch blanket was also spotted on Etsy, but has been sold unfortunately. But I think with this tutorial and the right shades of yarn it would not be too hard to make a blanket like this. You could pick the 12 colors from Stylecraft DK or Colour Crafter. Should be okay, right?

Secretly, there's nothig more fun that crocheting flowers, but what to do with a pile of crochet flowers? I stumbeled upon a beautiful vintage crochet flower blanket pattern with the fabulous name 'Morning Glory Afghan', just for that name I'd love to download that pattern. Isn't it gorgeous?
Jaren geleden gaf mijn schoonmoeder me haar compleet verzamelde werk van 'Het Complete Handwerken'. Dit was een serie die je bij elkaar kon sparen en dan in van die enorme multomappen kon bewaren. Er was een map met breipatronen, naaipatronen, haakpatronen en zelfs macramé (bewaar me, echt af-schuw-elijke foto's!). Bij de haakpatronen vond ik dit schattige dekentje. In het boek wordt het en 'blokmotief' genoemd, maar ik ken de steek als de 'basket steek', de uitleg heb ik in één van mijn haakboeken staan, maar je kunt een tutorial voor deze steek ook hier vinden. Volgens mij is dit typisch zo'n steek dat, als je er eenmaal in zit, je er er zo klaar mee bent. Vooral als je met wat dikker garen haakt, zoals Phildar 6, Drops Big Merino of Luca.
Years ago my mum-in-law gave me all her craftbooks, they came in these big binders from the 70's and there was a binder with knitting patterns, sewing patterns, quilting patterns, crochet patterns and even macramé (oh, how hideous... I'll spare you the pictures). In the binder with crochet patterns I found this vintage blanket pattern. It's called 'blocks blanket', but I recognise the basket stitch. I have an excellent crochet book that explains this stitch and you can also find a tutorial here. I do have the impression that this blanket is finished in a whim, once you get the hang of the stitch, especially if you use bulkier yarn like Phildar 6, Drops Big Merino or Luca.

Een van de mooiste gehaakte dekens die ik ooit heb gevonden op internet is dit exemplaar. Ik kan helaas nergens vinden waar het patroon nu vandaan komt. Ik meen me te herinneren dat het uit een oude Marie-Claire Idees komt. Maar of dat zo is? Wie het weet, mag het zeggen!
One of the most lovely vintage crochet blankets I've ever seen is this one. Unfortunately I can't find the original source, nor where the pattern is originated. I think I've read somewhere that this was an old pattern from Marie-Claire Idees? I'm not sure. If you know where this pattern is from, plaese feel free to enlighten me.

A day in Amsterdam

Wat doe je als je 7 jaar bij elkaar bent? Mijn lief en ik besloten het te vieren met Lego, de Zijderoute, vintage en lekker eten. Ofwel: een dagje Amsterdam.
Niets zegt liefde zoals Lego. Nou ja, volgens mijn man dan. Hij had vroeger bakken vol en ik denk dat als je in zijn hart kijkt, hij best graag nog eens een middagje op de woonkamervloer zou willen doorbrengen met een bouwpakket. Tsja, als liefde dan toch door het blokje gaat... dan is een bezoekje aan The Art of The Brick natuurlijk niet meer dan logisch. En eerlijk is eerlijk, toen ik onlangs een interview zag met Nathan Sawayan zag op televisie werd ik ook wel heel nieuwsgierig. Gevolg: zwaar onder de indruk van Lego- versies van schilderijen van Van Gogh, Rembrandt en Warhol en giechelen bij Lego portretten van Micky Mouse en Jimi Hendrix.
So, what do you do when you're celebrating your 7yr anniversary? My husband and me decided a 7 yr anniversary called for Lego, the Silk Route, vintage and some good food. In short: a day in Amsterdam.
Nothing says love like Lego. Well, according to my husband that is. He used to have tons of the stuff and I think that If you look deep into his heart he'd love to sit on the livingroom floor some afternoon just building something. So, going to The Art of the Brick seemed only logical. And I have to say, after seeing an interview with Nathan Sawayan on tv I was pretty intrigued too. The result: being so on awe over Lego versions of world famous paintings by old masters and giggling over Lego portrets of Micky Mouse and Jimi Hendrix.
Daarna snel met de metro richting Waterlooplein om superlekker te lunchen en langs de Amstel naar de Hermitage te wandelen. Dat was mijn keuze voor vandaag. De dependance van de Hermitage in St. Petersburg stond al zó lang op mijn lijstje en nu was er een interessante expositie over het reizen langs de Zijderoute. Love!
After that we took the subway to Waterloo Square to have lunch and walk along the Amstel river to the Amsterdam Hermitage. Here there are pieces from the original Hermitage in St. Petersburg in Russia and a visit was on my bucket list for quite a while now. At the moment there's an exposition going on about traveling along the Silk Route which was fantastic!
Voor 's avonds hadden we gereserveerd om te gaan eten, maar na het bezoekje aan de Hermitage hadden we nog uren over. Ontzettend vervelend natuurlijk om nog even uitgebreid door Amsterdam te wandelen en her en der een terrasje te pakken. Maar iemand moest het doen!
We had reservations at night for dinner, which left us with a few hours after visiting the Hermitage. Of course it was súch a drag to wander around sunny Amsterdam and sit outside with a drink whilst people watching. Oh well, someone had to do it.
Dat we op een terrasje recht tegenover de geweldige vintage shop Laura Dols terecht kwamen, was natuurlijk puur toeval. Ik zou daar nooit op aansturen! Maar goed, nu we er toch zaten, kon ik mooi tussen twee drankjes in even naar binnen wippen. De collectie jurkjes, schoenen en accessoires is echt super, maar ik ben vooral altijd erg onder de indruk van de vintage lakens, kussenhoezen en gehaakte dekens. Zo ontzettend mooi! Maar goed dat ik mijn creditcard niet bij me had.
And of course it was a complete coincidence that we ended up on a terrace right across vintage store Laura Dols, which is a great shop in Amsterdam. But hey, when in Rome... so between drinks I hopped inside and was gushing over all the dresses, accessoiries and shoes. But the best things are the vintage blankets and bedding. So reaking beautiful. I tell you, it was a good thing I didn't have my creditcard with me.
's Avonds aten we bij Pllek op de NDSM werf. Dit is wel een erg bijzonder deel van Amsterdam. Het was ooit een oude scheepswerf en nu vind je er allerlei creatieve initiatieven en pop-ups. Je gaat er met het pontje naartoe vanaf Amsterdam Centraal. We zaten eerst heerlijk in de zon met onze voetjes in het zand, terwijl we uitkeken over de skyline van Amsterdam, om vervolgens naar binnen te verhuizen en ons helemaal vol te stoppen met allerlei lekkers.
At night we had dinnet at Pllek at the NDSM wharf. This is a special part of Amsterdam, in the North. You have to take the ferry to get there. It used to be a large shipyard, but now it's a place for all kind of creative outings, like restaurants, galeries and pop-ups of all sorts. We sat there in the sun, feet in the sand, watching over the Amsterdam skyline, followed by a fabulous dinner inside.

Vintage and quirky shopping in Düsseldorf

Het is alweer een paar weken geleden dat ik voor mijn werk een dag op en neer naar Düsseldorf ging. Dat is vanuit Utrecht prima te doen trouwens, want met de trein ben je in minder dan 2 uur in hartje Düsseldorf. Nu gaan de meeste Nederlanders er naartoe om te shoppen, en daar is niets mis mee, maar nadat ik een blik op de Königsallee had geworpen (met de dure designers) en de zijstraten ervan (veel Zara, H&M etc) wist ik: dit kan beter, dit kan anders! Dus zette ik mijn journalisten-pet op en ging op onderzoek uit. En ja, het kon zo veel beter... en hoe!
A few weeks ago I went to Düsseldorf in Germany for the day. This may seem weird to you, but from where I live you take a highspeed train and you're in the heart of Düsseldorf within 2 hours. Isn't amazing that I can country-hop like this. Most Dutch people come to Düsseldorf to shop till they drop. Nothing wrong with that, but really you can find H&M, Zara, Gucci everywhere. I had to do better than this! So I put on my journalist-thinking cap and went exploring. And it got better, oh yes!
Ik wandelde vanaf de schattige Altstadt naar de wijk Bilk, een knusse wijk met prachtig gekleurde huizen, gezellige pleintjes en hofjes. Dit is zo'n beetje de studentenwijk van Düsseldorf en dat leek mij de perfecte plek om eens rond te neuzen. Ik bleek het bij het juiste eind te hebben! In de Bilker Allee vond ik een keur aan leuke vintage winkels met goede kwaliteit spullen en mooie kleding. Frauenzimmer was favoriet, alleen al door het gezellige personeel dat graag een praatje maakte en die je alle kon vragen over de verschillende artikelen. De vintage gitaar is favoriet (terwijl ik niet eens gitaar speel. Maar tis zo'n beauty).
So, I walked from the cute old city centre to Bilk, a cute quarter with lovely coloured houses and cosy squares. This is mostly a student place, so I thought that it would be a great place to find some vintage shops. And I was right! In Bilker Allee I found many gorgious places, selling high quality vintage. I liked Frauenzimmer best: the staff was so friendly and the vintage was fantastic. I loved the vintage guitar (and I don't even play the guitar, but it's such a beauty!).
De Lorettostraße is het middelpunt van de wijk en hier vind je een keur aan leuke shops en geweldige restaurants en cafés. Ik liep even binnen bij Saba*S waar je leuke (gehaakte!) kinderspeeltjes vindt en mooie accessoires voor dames, allemaal met retro touch. Yes please!
The Lorettostraße is the heart of the neighbourhood and has many quirky shops, bars and restaurants. I walked into Saba*S, a shop that sells (crocheted!) kids toys and retro women accessories, oh yes please!
En in de zijstraatjes is ook genoeg te beleven. Zo is huiskamerwinkel en concept store Schöne Sachen in de Burgerstraße echt de moeite waard met heel veel leuke artikelen van onafhankelijke ontwerpers, maar ook vintage en upcycelde accessoires voor jezelf of in huis. Ernaast zit Petit Rouge, een geweldige plek om koffie te drinken met een lekker stuk taart erbij (ik nam de rabarber-appel taart, goddelijk) of te lunchen.
If you walk into one of the side streets, there's lots to discover. In the Burgerstraße you'll find a small shop called Schöne Sachen, selling items by young and independant designers and vintage and upcycled accessories. Right next to it is cosy and small Petit Rouge, which is perfect for a cup of coffee and some cake (I picked the rhubarb-apple cake, which was to die for) or to have lunch.
Op een kwartiertje wandelen van de wijk, ligt een bijzondere buurt van Düsseldorf: Medienhafen, vol met moderne architectuur, net of je in een totaal andere wereld terecht bent gekomen! Ik vond dit vooral erg bijzonder, omdat Duitse steden toch vooral bekend staan vanwege de vakwerkhuisjes, dan verwacht je zo'n modern bolwerk toch niet. Zeker even kijken dus!
Wil je een keertje, net als ik, een dagje naar Düsseldorf? Dat is echt een eitje. Je kunt vanuit Nederland al vanaf €19 naar Düsseldorf met de trein. Wil je nog meer doen in Düsseldorf? Hier zette ik op een rijtje wat je in één dag allemaal in de stad kunt doen.
And from Bilk it's only a 15 minute walk to one of the most special areas of Düsselfdorf: Medienhafen (Media Harbour, because so many media corporations have their office here), with fantastic modern architecture. I found it very special as I often don't think of Germany as a place for top-modern buildings, but I don't mind being wrong, certainly not in this case!

If you walk into one of the side streets, there's lots to discover. In the Burgerstraße you'll find a small shop called Schöne Sachen, selling items by young and independant designers and vintage and upcycled accessories. Right next to it is cosy and small Petit Rouge, which is perfect for a cup of coffee and some cake (I picked the rhubarb-apple cake, which was to die for) or to have lunch.
Op een kwartiertje wandelen van de wijk, ligt een bijzondere buurt van Düsseldorf: Medienhafen, vol met moderne architectuur, net of je in een totaal andere wereld terecht bent gekomen! Ik vond dit vooral erg bijzonder, omdat Duitse steden toch vooral bekend staan vanwege de vakwerkhuisjes, dan verwacht je zo'n modern bolwerk toch niet. Zeker even kijken dus!
Wil je een keertje, net als ik, een dagje naar Düsseldorf? Dat is echt een eitje. Je kunt vanuit Nederland al vanaf €19 naar Düsseldorf met de trein. Wil je nog meer doen in Düsseldorf? Hier zette ik op een rijtje wat je in één dag allemaal in de stad kunt doen.
And from Bilk it's only a 15 minute walk to one of the most special areas of Düsselfdorf: Medienhafen (Media Harbour, because so many media corporations have their office here), with fantastic modern architecture. I found it very special as I often don't think of Germany as a place for top-modern buildings, but I don't mind being wrong, certainly not in this case!

Eindelijk, weer eens een weekend thuis. Helemaal geen afspraken, niets moeten, niet op de klok kijken. En dus spendeerde ik het weekend aan het uitmesten van de boekenkast (alle boeken staan nu op kleur, hoe 101 Woonideeën van mij hè.... ik ben een baard verwijderd van het hipster-zijn), schoonmaken van het huis (als het niet zo nodig was geweest had ik het niet gedaan) en genieten van de lente die er nu echt wel aan komt.
Finally, a weekend spent at home. No appointments, no must-do's, no looking at the clock. So I spent my weekend rearranging our book case (all books are now color coordinated... I know, I am one beard away from being a hipster), cleaning the house (trust me, if it wasn't called for I wouldn't have done it) and enjoying spring. It's finallt coming, I'm sure.
Ik bakte een koffiecake, met Griekse yoghurt, bruine suiker en nootjes. Hij kwam niet zo mooi uit de vorm als dat ik had gehoopt. Dus sneed ik hem in kleine stukjes. Want, zo verzekert mijn lief mij altijd, het kan toch niet in één stuk naar binnen.
I baked a coffee cake, with Greek yoghurt, brown sugar and nuts. It didn't come out of the mould as pretty as I hoped, but it tastes really well. So I cut it up in small blocks. Because, as my husbear keeps pointing out, it can't go down whole anyway.
Afgelopen week had ik vreselijk weinig tijd, écht heel weinig tijd zelfs. Maar toen het internet bij één van mijn opdrachtgevers het liet weten, besloot ik niet te wachten tot het het eindelijk weer eens zou gaan doen, maar gewoon even op de fiets te springen. Met mijn neus in de zon en de wind in het haar naar mijn favoriete kringloopwinkel. De laatste maanden ving ik telkens bot. Maar nu was het weer eens raak. Wat een vintage schoonheden zeg!
The last couple of weeks I didn't have a lot of time, no time at all really. But last week, when internet went down at one of my clients, I decided not to wait until it would go back up, but I decided to jump on my bike. With the sun of my face and the wind in my hair I cycled to my favorite thrift shop. The last few months I didn't find anything special, but now I hit the jackpot again. Aren't these gorgious!
En als grote verrassing konden we dit weekend al sla uit eigen tuin eten! Dankzij het warme weer schoot de, deze winter geplante veldsla, enorm omhoog. Een paar bosjes waren al genoeg voor een flinke maaltijdsalade. Genieten.
And to my surprise we were able to eat letuce from our own balcony this weekend. Thanks to the warm weather the last few weeks, the lettuce was growing like mad! A few stalks were already enough for a big salad. Yum.

Blissful Sunday: thrifted happiness

Er is maar weinig voor nodig om mij op een zonnige zondag richting Amsterdam te krijgen, als volleerd provinciaal. Genieten van al die aparte, leuke winkeltjes en boetieks die Utrecht niet rijk is, schrikken van trams (want die heeft Utrecht ook niet) en stiekem wensen dat je een kaart bij je had, omdat je anders de weg kwijt raakt. Een middag Amsterdam is sowieso heerlijk, maar met een reden als die van vandaag ga ik er helemaal graag heen: met een doel! Naar de boekpresentatie van Inghings: Kringloopgeluk.
Honestly, it doesn't take a lot to lure me to Amsterdam on a sunny afternoon like today. I am such a provincial girl. I love browsing all the quirky shops in our capital, trams startle me and I always wish I had brought a map, 'cause I always lose my way. Spending the afternoon in Amsterdam is great, but when I go there with a reason it's even better. Like today, 'cause I went to the book launch of Ingthings book: Thrifted happiness.
Normaal gesproken vind ik dat altijd heel eng: zo maar ergens naartoe gaan waar heel veel mensen zijn die ik niet ken. Met wie moet ik dan praten? En waarover dan in vredesnaam? Maar vandaag kwam dat helemaal goed. Ik zag een berichtje op Twitter van 2 blogsters die vanaf Utrecht vertrokken en ben gezellig met hen opgereisd. De presentatie werd gehouden in een hele leuke winkel in De Pijp: All the luck in the world. Vol met design en vintage geluk.
Normally I think it's very scary: going somewhere where I don't know anyone. I mean: who do I talk to and what about? But today that was a little different. I saw on twitter two blog ladies wre also going and leaving from Utrecht, so I met up with them and we travelled together. The presentation was held in the cutest shop: All the luck in the world. Filled with great design and vintage happiness.
'Pak lekker een kopje en neem maar mee naar huis hoor, ik wil er straks geen meer zien', liet Ingrid meteen weten toen we binnenkwamen en haar feliciteerde met haar boek. Iedereen stond dus lekker thee of koffie te leuten uit een kingloop kopje, als dat niet volgens het thema was!
'Just take a cup and please take it home with you, I don't want to see any left after today', was what Ingrid said when we came into the store and congratulated her on her book. So everyone was sipping coffee and tea from a thrifted cup. Very according to theme!
Een ook de taarten (waaronder deze brownies), allemaal gemaakt door de fameuze Fem, waren niet te versmaden. Eerlijkheid gebied me te zeggen dat ik voor twee stukken citroentaart ging, maar die citroentaart lag niet op zo'n heerlijk vintage bord.
And the cakes (as well as these brownies), all made by the famous Fem, were so good. To be fair, I ate two pieces of lemon cake, but the lemon cake wasn't on such a cute vintage plate.
Het was een supergezellige drukte, met een héle hoop dames, enkele hanen en een paar ontzettend welopgevoede, vrolijke, lieve kinderen. Genoeg stof om over te praten was er zeker, want het bleek dat iedereen elkaars blog wel las of elkaar volgde via Twitter, Facebook of Instagram. Hilarisch!
It was such a fun afternoon and it was so busy, lots of ladies of course, only a few men and some really nice and cute kids. There were enough things to talk about, 'cause many of us found out we read each others blog or we follow each other on social media. Isn't that hilarious.
Maar het draaide natuurlijk allemaal om haar. Want Kringloopgeluk is een heerlijk boek. Deze foto nam ik stiekem, want Ingrid is vreselijk verlegen, maar wel heel vrolijk! Zelden iemand zo onvermoeibaar een persoonlijke boodschap in talloze boeken zien krabbelen.
But it was all about the woman on the right. Her book is really worth it. I had to take a sneaky shot of Ingrid, 'cause she's actually rather shy. But she has a great spirit: she was signing books and writing personal messages like I haven't seen it before.
Mocht je een keer in Amsterdam zijn, ga dan vooral even langs deze winkel. Tis zo leuk, en vlakbij de Albert Cuyp, dus daarna kun je daar lekker overheen banjeren en leuke jurkjes, olijven en noten scoren. Of gewoon een terrasje pakken in de buurt.
If you're ever in Amsterdam, just check out this store, It's very cute. And it's very close to Albert Cuyp market, so after you're done you can go there and buy some lovely olive and nuts, or maybe shop for dresses. Or maybe just have a drink outside in the sun.
