A day with Ka-Ching

Wat is beter dan één Etsy-verkoper? Tien Etsy-verkopers! Dat is ongeveer de gedachte achter het Ka-Ching collectief, een initiatief van vier Etsy-verkoopsters die vonden dat het allemaal beter kan: de foto's, de looks van de winkels en ja, ook de verkoop. Dat kan ik natuurlijk alleen maar beamen. En alles gaat nu eenmaal net een beetje gemakkelijker als je elkaar kunt ondersteunen en helpen. Maar het is ook gewoon leuk om andere Etsy verkopers wat beter te leren kennen, zeker als je meestal in je uppie werkt.

Ik leerde het Ka-Ching collectief kennen via Annabel, van de winkel SecondHandSandy, toen ik haar interviewde voor ZiZ Magazine en vond het leuk dat het collectief allerlei bijeenkomsten organiseert, zodat de Nederlandse Etsy winkels zo goed en mooi mogelijk worden. Vandaar dat ik gisteren te vinden was op de fotodag van het Ka-Ching collectief, op landgoed Elswout.

What's better than one Etsy seller? Ten Etsy sellers! That's more or less what four Amsterdam based Etsy sellers thought when they formed the Ka-Ching collective. They thought our Dutch Etsy shops could do better: we could take better pics, our shops could look prettier and heck, we could even sell more. And I couldn't agree more. And you know, everything goes a bit easier if you just help each other out. And it's also a lot of fun to get to know other Etsy sellers, especially if you're always working by yourself.

I got to know the Ka-Ching collective through one of the founders, Annabel who owns Etsy shop SecondHandSandy, when I interviewed her for ZiZ Magazine. And I loved the fact that the collective organises a lot of workshops and field days for fellow Etsy sellers. That's why I spent my Saturday this weekend at a huge estate to take a workshop 'product photografy'.

 

De hele dag zijn we druk bezig geweest met fotografie. We kregen goede tips over productfotografie door een fotografe, maar er was nog veel meer. We hielpen elkaar met poseren, want sommige items staan nu eenmaal het beste op een model. En ja, ik heb ook model gestaan. Daarvoor onderging ik bijna een totale metamorfose en moest ik totaal uit mijn comfortzone stappen. Binnenkort verschijnen hier misschien de foto's wel! Maar ook werd er met een opbouwende kritische blik gekeken naar elkaars Etsy shops en werden er druk tips uitgewisseld over hoe het allemaal nog beter kan.

The whole day was pretty much all about pics for Etsy shops, which was very interesting. We got some great advice from a photographer, but there was more. We also modelled for each other, because sometimes your products show best on a model. And yes, I was a model too! I went through this great make-over and had to step a long way from my comfort zone. But it was so much fun. I hope to show you the pics soon. But we also took a look at each others shops and reviewed them, giving feedback.

En fotograferen en model staan, maakt hongerig. We namen allemaal wat lekkers mee. Ik bracht cranberry-rozijnen muffins mee en een vanille cake. Maar er stonden zo veel lekkere dingen op tafel dat het moeilijk kiezen was.

Taking pictures and modeling makes hungry! We all took something yummy for luch. I took cranberry-raison muffins and a vanilla cake. But there were so many yummy things on the table that it was hard to chose.

Het landgoed was helemaal geweldig. Er waren stallen, een hooizolder, hekken, roestige landbouwgereedschappen, landerijen en bossen. Echt heel fijn om daar foto's van je producten te kunnen maken, met mooi licht erbij én tips van een fotografe. En tot mijn genoegen: twee gezellige poezers. Als dát niet gezellig is! The estate was just gorgious. There were stables, a hay attic, beautiful wooden fences, rusty tools, woods and fields. It was such a pleasure to take pictures there of some of my shop items and get advice too from a prof photographer. And, I realise this makes me a very sad person, there were two lovely kitties there! Aww, great  company. I hope to be showing my new pics on here and Etsy soon!

'Be unique, buy handmade'

Meestal doe ik mijn best om mijn werk en mijn blog een beetje gescheiden te houden. Ik bedoel: wat is er nou vervelender dan mensen die alleen maar over hun werk praten? Maar soms lopen de twee ineens helemaal door elkaar en dat was in het geval van mijn artikel  'Wees uniek, koop handgemaakt' dat ik schreef voor ZiZ Magazine (het digitale magazine van Zij in Zaken). Het thema van deze keer was namelijk 'authenticiteit' en daarbij kon ik eigenlijk alleen maar aan handgemaakte producten denken. Er zijn zoveel handmade webshops, creatievelingen en initiatieven die ik een warm hart toedraag. Die verdiende weleens een wat groter podium. 

Most of the time I try to seperate blog from work and the other way around. I mean, isn't it boring if someone keeps on going and going about work? I think so anyway, but sometimes work and blog collide and in this case it happened when I was working for ZiZ Magazine, a digital magazine for female professionals. The theme this fall was authenticity and for me that means handmade poducts. There are so many great handmade webshops, makers and initiatives around that I was of the humble opinion that they deserved some attention! So I wrote the feature 'Be unique, buy handmade'.

‘Veel mensen denken steeds bewuster na over aankopen. Als ze iets willen aanschaffen, moet het wel wat bijzonder zijn. Dan is handgemaakt de uitkomst, want dan heb je echt iets unieks in handen. Handgemaakte producten zijn vaak met veel passie en aandacht gemaakt.’ Dat vertelde Henriëtte Klein me. Zij richtte Metdehand.nl 3 jaar geleden op. Samen met zus Wendy besloot ze er aan het begin van dit jaar helemaal voor te gaan. Metdehand.nl is een laagdrempelig platform voor handgemaakte producten met een frissen uitstraling. In één jaar zagen zij het aantal winkels én bezoekers van de website verdubbelen. Als dat geen belofte voor de toekomst is.

'Lots of people think hard and deep before they buy something new. And when they decide to purchase something, it has to be special. That's when handmade items come into the picture, 'cause when you buy handmade you always buy something unique'. That's what Henriëtte Klein told me. She's the founder of Metdehand.nl. Together with her sis Wendy she decided this year to make Metdehand.nl a platform for people wanting to sell and buy handmade items from The Netherlands. Metdehand.nl looks fresh and clean and within one year the Klein sisters saw both the amount of shops as the amount of visitors double. Now that's a handmade promise.

En natuurlijk mocht ik het grootste platform niet vergeten: Etsy. Zeker nu er een apart kanaal is van Etsy voor de Benelux: EtsyNL. Ingrid Meijer van EtsyNL vertelde me dat op Etsy handmade ondernemers elkaar ontzettend steunen. 'Binnen onze online community vinden de Nederlandse ondernemers elkaar en zij zoeken samen naar mogelijkheden en kansen om hun producten te promoten. Daarnaast willen we ook initiatieven van onze ondernemers ondersteunen, bijvoorbeeld als zij een handgemaakte markt met anderen willen organiseren of een tijdelijke pop-up shop openen. Zo kunnen zij als ondernemers groeien en groeit ook de aanhang van handgemaakte producten.’

And of course I couldn't forget the most important platform for handmade products: Etsy. Especially since there is a seperate channel for the Dutch, Belgian and Luxemburgian market: EtsyNL. Ingrid Meijer from EtsyNL told me how she noticed that Dutch and Belgian handmade entrepreneurs help and encourage each other on the Etsy community. 'The look at opportunities to promote each others work. We in return look at possibilities to reach out if they collectively want to open a pop-up store or organise a handmade market. This way their businesses can grow and handmade items will become more and more popular.'
