Creative travel guide to Den Bosch

I was born and raised in the Dutch Brabant province, yet I really hardly knew provincial capital city Den Bosch all that well. Silly me. Lucky for me, I had to go there for work for a couple of days and I was able to really get to know the place. And of course, I couldn't resist looking up the most creative hotspots while I was there. So read along, please!

Den Bosch was the home of world-famous painter Jhernomimus Bosch, famous for his large paintings full of hellish demons and premonitions. Since work isn't just about visiting cool shops for me (oh, how I wish sometimes that was true) I decided to look into Bosch a little more. I have seen his paintings in Munich and Madrid but didn't know much about the man. I decided to go on a boat tour on the canals of Den Bosch themed 'Heaven and hell float', discovering the history of Den Bosch and meeting some of the fantasy creatures Jeroen Bosch painted. It was extremely interesting and at the ends, you can enter the Bosch Art Centre to see replicas of his famous paintings and enjoy an amazing view from the top of the belltower of the art centre.

Then it was time to visit that other highlight in Den Bosch: the Saint Johns Cathedral. Now, living in Utrecht, I am spoilt with beautiful churches, but the cathedral is Den Bosch (it has to be said) is maybe the prettiest in The Netherlands, with amazing ceilings, breathtaking stained glass windows and so much art. A (free!) visit is a must.

3x lunch in Den Bosch

If you're going for lunch, I can recommend different fun hotspots, these are my 3 favourites.

Buurt

Buurt is a 5-minute walk from the railway station. I already knew this place, as I did an assignment for a form across the road from this cafés. There is lovely outdoor seating, and the cakes and sandwiches are really nice.

Eetbar DIT
Ja, Eetbar DIT is echt mijn favoriet in Den Bosch!

I think Eetbar DIT has to be my favourite in Den Bosch, as it's a place that will make you laugh. And the terrace is nice and shady (I hate sitting in the full sun, bad for my freckled skin). The menu is packed with nice lunch options and snacks.

Verkadefabriek

Alright, you have to walk 10 minutes from central station, but it's worth it. This factory used to be one of the largest cookie factories in The Netherlands and even though it has been modernised, you can still see all the lovely old details. The old factory now hosts a bar, restaurant and a cinema. I sat outside with some proper people watching, but it's also rather nice inside.

But where to go if you want to do a little shopping? Well, you can simply head over to Vughterstraat and Snellestraat, although I also really enjoyed the places I found in Hinthammerstraat. These are my 5 favourites.

5 x shoppen in Den Bosch

Stoffenhuis Hoofs

Hoofs is just a piece of heaven for any creative person. The store is spread out through 3 premises in Vughterstraat, with fashion fabrics, carnaval and festive fabrics, and a store with notions and yarn. If you don't have yor husband with you (like I had) you could spend hours there.

Koekwaus

Koekwaus is a lovely concept store in Vughterstraat where you can really buy anything, from clothing to jewellery and from plants to paper goods. I thought the colourful cacti were just so cute!

Vintage room

If you have a knack for vintage accessories and toys, you simply must visit Vintage Room. You can roam the place for the best things, and I thought the vintage LEGO was rather impressive.

OAK
Ja, OAK is fijn!

Oh, how I love OAK. They have such pretty fashion. It was so hot when I walked in, that I couldn't bring myself to trying anything on. So I left behind a really beautiful dress and I still regret it. But there is more to explore, like paper goods and jewellery.

Daily Poetry

Daily Poetry sells one of my favourite clothing brands (Sessun), so I simply had to walk in and see for myself. And so I discovered more gorgeous clothes, but also very beautiful plants, sweet greeting cards and lovely home accessories. Go see for yourself.

Hotel in Den Bosch

Little Duke Hotel & Coffee lab

Heel relaxt.

Hotspot in Den Bosch: Coffeelab | Happy in Red

I was told that there wasn't a cheaper room to be found in Den Bosch (so I took that challenge) and indeed, Little Duke Hotel was the cheapest option in town. You can stay here for €56 per night. And you can find the hotel just across from the station which is just really convenient since I prefer train travel to driving.

The hotel is completely self-check-in. This means that 24 hours prior to your stay they send you the security code to open the door, then you can check in at the horse. I thought I would really screw this up, but it was very easy. Just enter your name and check-out date, then load your keycard. Easy really. And since the building is really old (the 1890s) and filled with old details and vintage, it really doesn't come off so impersonal as it sounds. The room was pretty nice too, with a balcony. We had a yellow room, which I loved (my husband is not a fan of yellow).

In the morning you go downstairs to Coffeelab for a cup of coffee, great homemade cake and a good breakfast. I really loved this place, all those plants and green details. Right up my alley and the food was great too.

I hope you liked my little trip around Den Bosch, hopefully, you'll be a little inspired to travel now!

  3. Leuk om te lezen! Den Bosch is zo'n fijne stad!
