The Insignia cowl, free crochet pattern

Dat de thermometer -9°C aanwijst, maar dat het voelt als -15°C. Laat ik het zo zeggen: mijn nieuwe gehaakte kol is me afgelopen week al behoorlijk goed van pas gekomen. Ik kon er heerlijk diep in wegkruipen. En een betere timing voor een gratis haakpatroon en werkbeschrijving voor deze gehaakte kol lijkt er dan ook niet te zijn, dus hier komtie.

The thermometer is pointing to -9°C at the moment, but the real feel is -15°C (don't ask me what it is in Fahrenheit but trust me, it's free-heezing). So let me put it this way: my new crochet cowl was put to very good use the last week. It was nice to be able to hide inside it, finding some shelter from the icy wind. Therefore, I guess my timing is perfect for posting the brand new free crochet pattern and tutorial for The Insignia Cowl today! Here goes. 


Wat heb je nodig?

- 2 bollen Scheepjes Stonewashed, ik koos voor de kleur Blue Apatite.
- 4 bolletjes 10 gram Catona, in de kleuren 105 Bridal White, 249 Saffron, 383 Ginger Gold, 515 Emerald (maar als je nog wat restjes gemercieerd katoen hebt liggen, kun je die ook gebruiken).
- Haaknaald 4 mm
- Spullen om je werk te blocken.
- Stompe borduurnaald
- Maasnaald
- Steekmarkeerder

Je kunt de garens kopen bij winkeliers bij jou in de buurt die Scheepjes verkopen, maar je kunt Stonewashed en Catona ook online bestellen.

What do you need?

- 2 balls of Scheepjes Stonewashed, I chose the colour Blue Apatite
- 4 balls of Catona, colours 105 Bridal White, 249 Saffron, 383 Ginger Gold, 515 Emerald.
You can buy sweet and tiny 10 gram balls, but if you have any scraps laying around: this is the perfect time to use them.
- Hook 4mm
- Your blocking gear
- Blunt embroidery needle
- Tapestry needle
- Stitch marker

Before you start!! Important!!

Als je deze tutorial even doorneemt voordat je begint (altijd even doen!), vraag je je misschien af waarom ik niet in het rond hebt gehaakt. Maar ik kan je vertellen: dat had ik in eerste instantie dus geprobeerd. En dat ging dus mis. In het rond haken heeft zo zijn voordelen, zo zie je bijvoorbeeld geen naad. Echter, als je rond haakt, komen de vasten niet netjes boven elkaar te zitten, maar een beetje schuin. En dat levert probelem op bij het kruissteek borduren. Je kunt niet goed zien waar je de steken moet plaatsen én (da's nog veel erger), doordat de vasten schuin boven elkaar staan, loopt je borduurwerk scheef. Op de foto hier beneden kun je zien dat het mis gaat. Ofwel: NIET in het rond haken voor dit patroon, maar gewoon heen en weer, zoals ik beschrijf. Een gewaarschuwd mensch... etc.

If you're reading this tutorial before you start (always do that), you might wonder why I didn't crochet in the round. Well, I tried that at first. But please don't. Here's why. When crocheting in the round the single crochet stitches don't end up on top of each other, but just that little to the side. And this is a problem if you'd like to cross stitch on it after you're done. Not only is it more or less impossible to see where to cross stitch, but (even worse) your cross stitching will go all lopsided as the SC's are not on top of each other. As you can see in the photo: it's pretty dreadful. I've done this wrong, so please don't make my mistake and crochet in rows instead of rounds, as described in the tutorial.

Free crochet pattern: The Insignia Cowl

Met Stonewashed en haaknaald 4

- Haak 111 lossen, keer en haak hier 111 vasten in. Ik begon echter met een 'chainless foundation chain' van 111. Met een chainless foundation chain is je onderkant van je werk geheid recht en lekker elastisch, heel fijn voor een kol. Deze video legt uit hoe je zo'n begin maakt. 

- Tour 2 - 33: 2l (= 1v) en 110 vasten.
- Hecht af, laat zo'n 30-40cm garen hangen.
- Block je werk. In deze tutorial zie je hoe je dat doet. 

- Je lap is ongeveer 14 cm hoog en 61 - 64 cm breed.

- Na het blocken, naai je de naad dicht met het garen dat je hebt laten hangen. (Je kunt ook na het borduren de naad dichtnaaien).

- Werk je eindjes weg.

With Stonewashed and hook 4 mm
- Chain 111, turn your work and crochet 111 sc's. OR: I started with a 'chainless foundation chain single crochet' of 111 stitches. A chainless foundation chain allows for a nice and even first row and it's a little stretchy, which is nice for a crochet cowl. This video shows perfectly how to make a chainless foundation chain. 

- Row 2 -33: ch2 (=1sc), 110 sc.
- Cast off, leave 30-40 cm of yarn.

- Block your work. This tutorial shows you how to do that. 

- Your work should be more or less 14 cm high and 61-64 cm wide.

- After blocking sew the side seams together, using the long strand of yarn you left. (You can also close the seams after the cross stitching)

- Weave in your ends. 

Kruissteken op je haakwerk borduren, met Catona

- Begin in de steek 'tegenover' de naad, zodat de naad altijd achterin je nek zit als je het patroon onder je kin hebt. Dit is steek 56. 

- Begin 2 of 3 rijen vanaf de onderkant gezien. 

- Plaats een steekmarkeerder in steek 56 van rij 2 of 3.

- Als je nu 9 steken opzij gaat kun je beginnen met kruissteekborduren. Ik begon met Ginger Gold, toen Saffron, Bridal White, eindigend met Emerald. Ik werkte het patroon dus van onder naar boven. 

- Gebruik onderstaand schema, de blauwe vakjes zijn de kruissteken.

- Weten waar je een kruissteek precies plaatst? Een vaste maakt een soort 'omgekeerd'  V vormpje met een verticaal streepje erop. Steek je naald van achter naar voren aan de rechterkant van het streepje, ga schuin naar de linker onderkant van het V vormpje en trek je garen van de voorkant naar de achterkant van je werk. Achterlangs piep je je naald aan de linkerkant van het streepje weer naar voren en ga je naar de rechter onderkant van het V vormpje. Geloof me, zodra je ziet wat ik bedoel heb je het zo in je vingers.
- Werk je eindjes netjes weg.
- Deze kol blijft goed rechtop staan en de 'lelijke' kant is dus onzichtbaar als je hem draagt.

Cross stitch on crochet, with Catona- Start in the stitch 'opposite' the seam, so the seam is always in your neck when you wear the print under your chin. This is stitch 56.

- Start in row 2 or 3 from the bottom.

- Place a stitch in stitch 56 in row 2 or 3.

- Move 9 sc's to the left of the stitch marker, this is where you will start the cross stitch pattern. I started with Ginger Gold, then Saffron and Bridal White, ending with Emerald.

- Use the chart to cross stitch the Insignia print. The blue boxes represent a cross stitch.
- Where to place the cross stitch? A SC looks a little like an upside down V with a strip on top. You start by putting your needle back to front, on the right from the little stripe to the bottom left next to the upside down V. Pull your needle back up on the left side of the strip and go to the right bottom of the upside down V. Trust me, as soon as you see what I mean, you'll be cross stitching like a mad woman!

- Weave in your ends.
- Since the crochet cowl will stay upright nicely, you won't be able to see the 'bad' side of the cowl. 

En je bent klaar! Dit is een leuk en snel patroon, echt een aanrader als je nog restjes wol wil opmaken of als je op zoek bent naar een snel cadeautje om voor iemand te maken.
