Weekendje Gent: Van Katoen

There were masses and masses waiting at 10 am at the doors of MIAT in Ghent, all waiting for Van katoen to get started! I was one of them, though I sneaked in a little sooner (someone at the welcoming desk said: 'Hey, you're Happy in Red' woohoo!) and I could pick up the 100% Ghent travelguide that I won because I was one of the visitors that came a far way.

Oei...

And then I had to run, to my first workshop: sewing an a-line skirt. I started out really well and learned how to use an overlocker ( great, now I want one). But later on it got harder. I sewed the wrong seam, twice. So, I didn't get to finish the job unfortunately and am now facing the challenge of putting in an invisible zipper all by myself. Yikes.

Nah! (Tis een schat, kopen haar boek!)

And then I had to run again to my second workshop: a wrap around skirt by the famous Mme Zsa Zsa. Really cool. I expected it to be so hard (English seams and all), but it wasn't at all. Loved this workshop. Mme was very busy with us all! And yes, she's much shorter than I thought (just kidding, but this is what you say about 'celebs' right?) and she didn't even wear one of her skirts! Nah! (Seriously, she's lovely)

Oh yeah, I had been warned: two workshops (8 hours of sewing in total) would be hard and yes it was true. Wow. So afterwards I treated myself to one of Julies cupcakes and decided that I deserved some retail therapy.

And shopping, that was no problem at Van Katoen! In den Beer fabrics had the best spot, just in front of that gorgious mural!

There were loads of great handmade goods for sale, like these cute button cards and reversible handbags.

But I spent the most money at Bambiblauw, oh I just loved the fabrics, notions and patterns they had! So, at the end of the day I walked back to my B&B with bags full of goodies, a soar back and painful feet and a very very good mood.

Oh and I've counted: the number of 'Happy in Red' sightings came to 6. Everyone who came on over to me and said hello: thank you so much, I really appreciated you taking the time to come and say hi. I was great meeting you!

Fabric mania: off to Gent (Van Katoen)!

Tomorrow morning I will hear my alarm clock really early. I am off to Ghent, Belgium. To the Van Katoen event. And on Saturday I am goong to be really busy! I am taking 2 workshops. In the morning I will be learning how to sew a a-line skirt and in the afternoon I'll learn how to sew a wrap around skirt. So hopefully I'll return home with a lot more 'skirting' knowledge. For the workshops I had to take fabric and notions along. So I did some shopping!

And yes, 2 workshops and 4 kinds of fabric. What's that about? Well, I couldn't make up my mind. I am gonna pick one when I'm there. So, are any of you coming? I'll be there by myself, so if you see a tall redhead (toying around with a skirt or burried on a stash of bags filled with fabrics I couldn't resist), come and say hi. I'd like that! And if you feel like having coffee, just let me know.

Schandalig toch! Hier zijn ze.

Oh and a while ago I bought great vintage fabrics... but I forgot to show you guys! Horrible isn't it. Anyway, here they are.

I bought a large piece of light blue fabric with white polkadots and a whole bunch of smaller fabrics scraps (about 20 cm by 30 cm) with flower prints. Aren't they just adorable!

The question is now: what to do with all this gorgious small scraps? I have no idea, so if you have any: please share your ideas with me! And while I am at it: another questions. The lighblue fabric is kinda old (early 70s) and is a little yellow-ish (like older fabric do... you know). Any idea how I can wash it out? I already washed it of course, but it's still there a little.

Hopefully: see you at Van Katoen!

Blissful Sunday

There's nothing better than get spring into your house. Just buying a busload of flowers and then just sit there and think: spring, I am ready... come now please!

And some new crochet to finish up. Another project that I am rather pleased with. Hopefully they'll like it at Kyoyu Kyoyu! I'll show you more this week, promise.

But one thing is troubling me. I've enrolled in some workshops for Van Katoen on April 14th in Ghent. Fun, you say! Yes, indeed. I am really looking forward to it. I want to visit Ghent all weekend so I can properly visit the city. Som what's the problem? Well, accommodation! I can't find any! I am travelling solo (which I don't mind) and I don't want to spend €140, so I was looking for a nice B&B. Ghent has lots of nice B&Bs. But as soon as some B&B owners hear that I am travelling by myself they say: oh no, you better sleep at the youth hostel. Pardon me? Not nice! I will try some more B&Bs, but I am really worried about this. I really want to visit this event!

So sweet sweet Flemish ladies (and especially those from Ghent): can you help me out purlease? Do you know a B&B (not too far from the city centre) where they aren't afraid of a solo travelling attendant to Van katoen? Or maybe someone is willing to rent out their attick to me? I am potty trained, very quiet and very cheap to keep. I'd really appreciate your help.

Geef 'em van katoen

Gelukkig nieuwjaar allemaal!

Happy new year everyone! Did you have a lovely new years' eve? I spent the night with my crazy, lovely friends and had a absolute blast. It was a lot of fun!

Normally I'm not the person to make new years resolutions. If you want to do something, then just go for it! Don't wait untill Januari first! But this year I have one. I want to go to Ghent. Ghent, Belgium. And why is that so interesting I hear you think (since Ghent is just around the corner for us Dutchies). But I am going to Ghent for a reason.

I am going there to visit Van Katoen. All benefits of this sewing event go to charity. There's workshops to take, fabrics and buttons to buy... seriously, no one needs to twist my arm to go. And Ghent is one of my favorite cities in Belgium, so I think I am gonna make a weekend out of it.

And I thought I might as well contribute. One of the biggest promoters for this event (the wonderfully talented Eloleo) asked bloggers to make some fabric shopping bags, so when people buy something at Van Katoen they don't have to use plastic bags. She even drew us the pattern. Easy peasy.

Even productie draaien en voila.

Even easier: if you cut the fabric like Eloleo tells you to (with the fabric folded in half), you cut two bags in one go. Talk about working on the assembly line! It was so easy and I think they're great. Maybe some more will come out from under my sewing machine. Who knows!

So, what are your new years resolutions? Are you maybe also travelling to Ghent to attend Van Katoen? If so, I'm always up for a cuppa coffee!

A big thank you to Christina Adventures and The 36th Avenue for featuring my bags!
