2 times market fun today!

Eigenlijk had ik dit Pinksterweekend in Bremen moeten zijn voor mijn werk. Maar door de staking op de Duitse spoorwegen, die uiteindelijk dan toch niet doorging, werd mijn reis afgezegd. Balen, maar wat in het vat zit verzuurt niet. Dus trok ik vandaag met mijn lief naar twee markten in Utrecht, in hetzelfde park ook nog eens.

This weekend was Whitsunday weekend in The Netherlands and the Monday is always a bank holiday. I was supposed to be in Bremen, Germany this weekend for work. But due to strikes in Germany my trip got cancelled, a realy bummer! Though it did mean I was able to visit two markets today with my husbear.

Mijn eerste stop was de Utrechtse fabriek, zoals ik de laatste jaren wel vaker doe met Pinksteren. Maar... en ik hoop niet dat ik als een oude zeur klink... ik vond het de afgelopen jaren toch leuker. Er waren toen meer stoffenkramen, wolkramen, kramen met pakketjes waar je zelf wat mee kon gaan doen etc. Ik zag nu gelukkig ook genoeg dames die met mooie eigen gemaakte producten stonden, maar ook héél veel massa-productie en daar is die markt volgens mij niet voor. 

My first stop was Utrecht Fabriek, an event I visited the last few years during Whitsunday weekend. But, and I hope you don't think I am an old bitter woman, but I liked the last few editions better than this year's event. In the last few years there were lots of stalls with pretty paper, yarn, fabrics and DIY kits. Luckily there were still some ladies with pretty handmade things, but also lots of mass productions (esp. kids clothes) and I don't feel that they really belong on a market like this.

En net als vorig jaar liepen we ook even langs Foodfestival TREK, dat in hetzelfde park werd georganiseerd als de handmade market. En helaas, ook hier... toch minder dan vorig jaar toen het op een kleinere en intiemere locatie, met leukere en minder bekendere foodtrucks. Ik kan ook erg slecht tegen grote massa's en het was iets te druk vandaag voor mij. We kwamen nog wel wat buurtjes tegen waar we gezellig een wijntje mee dronken en ik heb zalige kroketten op van Monsieur Croquette (eend met truffel, amai amai). 

Wat heb jij dit weekend gedaan? En zijn er de komende tijd nog kleinere, onbekendere markten waar ik binnenkort eens moet gaan kijken?

And just like last year we had a look at food truck festival TREK, it was in the same park. But alas and sadly (I may just may be an old a grumpy woman wince my bday last week), but I thought it was better last year when the festival was organised in a smaller and more intimate setting. I can't take big crowds very well and it was a little too busy for me. We did run into some of our neighbors and had some really good wines together and the croquettes by Monsieur Croquette (duck and truffle, oh my!) were awesome!

Blissful Sunday: to the market with me!

Oké, officieel gezien is het geen zondag. Maar tweede Pinksterdag, dat geldt wel een beetje als zondag toch? Het begint een beetje een traditie te worden dan ik elk Pinksterweekend wel even langs loop bij De Utrechtse Fabriek. In het begin deed ik het vooral om ideeën op te doen, inkopen te doen en te bekijken wat er allemaal te krijgen was.

Alright alright, it's not Sunday. But it's a long weekend here, so Monday feels like Sunday, and it was blissful. So bare with me! It's become more or less a tradition that I go to De Utrechtse Fabric crat market every Whitsunday weekend. At first I went to het ideas, do some shopping and see what was happening in the craft world.

Maar nu ga ik eigenlijk om de webshops die ik al ken een hart onder de riem te steken, even bij te kletsen met verkopers die ik al ken, nieuwe shops te leren kennen en een beetje trots te zijn dat al deze creatieve webshop-eigenaars het al zo'n lange tijd redden. Dat wil toch wel wat zeggen volgens mij. Goed voorbeeld is Spool me, waar je leuke DIY naaikits en stoffen kunt bestellen.

But now I go to the market to support the people who own these creative webshops, to have a bit of a chat with the owners I already know, see who the new kids on the block are and to be proud that most of these webshop owners have been here for years and they're still going strong. That says something about the creative community I think. Like Spool me, who's been there from the start, a shop to order fun DIY kits and fabrics.

Leuke nieuwelingen (nou ja, ík had ze nog niet eerder gespot) waren bijvoorbeeld Kitsmade voor leuke tassen, hoeden en etuis en Prien waar je geweldige handgemaakte stationary kon kopen. En helemaal geweldig: er stond voor het eerst ook een wolkraam met geweldige producten. Gewoon eerlijk katoen, maar ook heerlijke zachte mixen van alpaca en merino.

Lovely newcomers (well, I hadn't seen them before) were Kitsmade with lovely leather bags and cosies and Prien where you could buy fantastic handmade stationary. And for the first time there was also a yarn stall, yay! My heart skipped a beat looking at plain and honest cotton and fantastic blends of alpaca and merino.

En ja, oude bekenden. Het was heerlijk om bij te kletsen met Greetje van Halsoverkop. Die stond heerlijk, relaxt op blote voeten in het gras alle nieuwe jurkjes en rokjes aan te prijzen. Ze heeft inmiddels al een enorme collectie, net een snoepwinkel. En ik moest natuurlijk even rommelen tussen alle flock applicaties, bandjes en stoffen. Alsof ik dat kan helpen!

And yes, old friends too. I met Greetje from Halsoverkop, who was standing on her bare feet in the grass, with the sun on her face, talking to all her lovely costumers about her huge new collection of crazy fun dresses, skirts and tops. Love them! And I couldn't help myself, I just had to browse all the applications, ribbons and fabrics.

Speciale vermelding is voor Story Tiles, ik vind het geweldig dat zo'n ouderwets concept als Delftsblauwe tegeltjes weer een totaal nieuwe adem ingeblazen kunnen krijgen. Er zijn heel ouderwetse oer-Hollandse tegels (te schattig) of moderne varianten met schitterende grafische opdrukken. Gaat dat zien!

I especially want to mention Story Tiles, as I think it's a wonderful idea to boost such a old fashioned concept. They sell really old fashioned Dutch Delftisch blue tiles (too cute to be true) and modern varieties with gorgious graphical prints.

Begin september wordt is De Utrechtse Fabriek weer paraat in het Griftpark in Utrecht en anders... ben ik er volgend jaar waarschijnlijk gewoon weer bij! Zelfde tijd, zelfde plek.

Early september there's another craft market like this in Utrecht, but if I can't make it, I definately will next year. Same time, same place.

A day in the rain

Heel trouw ga ik elk jaar naar de Utrechtse Fabriek in het Griftpark in Utrecht, dus ook vandaag. In de regen. Oh, wat voelde ik me rot namens al die mensen bij de kraampjes. Die hadden natuurlijk ook niet verwacht dat het eind mei maar twaalf graden (juist, twáálf graden!) zou zijn. Brr. Dus: winterjas aan en op de fiets.

Every year I go to the creative market in a park near me, Utrechtse Fabriek. Every year I go, so I also went today. In the rain. I felt so bad for all those people there selling their goods. 'Cause there's no way they ever could've thought it would be only twelve degrees (yes, twélve degrees!) at the end of May. So: I put on my winter coat and got on my bike.

Een van mijn favoriete kraampjes, elk jaar weer, is die van 'Buiten de lijntjes' met hun vrolijke en gezellige papierwaren. Die theedoeken die je later tot knuffelbeesten kunt naaien, vind ik al jaren heel erg leuk. Maar toch heb ik er nog nooit één gekocht. Misschien dat mijn dier er gewoon nog niet tussen zit.

One of my favorite stalls, every year, is that of 'Buiten de lijntjes' with all the happy and nice looking stationairy. I just adore the tea towels that you can sew into softies after you're done with them. I've never bought one though, I guess I am waiting for the right animal turned into a tea towel. 

 

Ondank de regen hoorde ik dat het gisteren superdruk was geweest op de markt, gelukkig maar. Elk jaar koop ik ook eigenlijk wel wat. Maar dit jaar kwam ik met lege handen thuis. Vooral omdat ik mezelf al verwende met een weekendje weg. Maar ik heb er wel een beetje spijt van, want bij het idee van een 'doe het zelf teckel' moet ik zo hard lachen, dat ik had er zo een toch wel mee had willen nemen. En ik ben natuurlijk ook vergeten hoe de webwinkel heet die het verkoopt. Mopper...

Despite the rain, I overheard that it was actually quite busy yesterday. That's a good thing. Every year I end up busing something at the market, but today I came home empty handed. Mostly because I had already treated myself to a weekend away. And I already regret it. 'Cause the whole idea of a DIY Doggie kit makes me laugh! I really should have bought one. But yeah, coulda woulda shoulda... and now I forgot the name of the shop that sells them. Grump...

Blissful, creative, sunny Sunday

En toen was het ineens weer Pinksterweekend, na de vrije dagen met Hemelvaart, Koninginnedag en Pasen. Ik moet zeggen: deze lange weekenden, ik kan er wel aan wennen. Zeker als het zulk lekker weer is als dit weekend. Gisteren nog bij mijn ouders in de achtertuin, maar vandaag moest ik toch echt terug naar Good Ol' Utrecht.

And here we are, Whit Sunday. It's a bank Holiday here, so another 4 day weekend for me. And I've had quite some of those lately thanx to Assumption Day, Queensday and Easter. It's so nice, I can get used to it. Especially with gorgious weather like this. Yesterday I lazed the day away in my parents garden, but today I really had to be here, in Good Ol' Utrecht.

Want vandaag organiseerde De Utrechtse Fabriek weer creatieve markt in het Griftpark. Vorig jaar ontdekt en nog steeds fan: vintage, retro, handgemaakt. En dat zonnetje vandaag erbij. Blij blij blij. Bovendien super om eens de gezichten achter een aantal webshops te zien.

'Cause today De Utrechtse Fabriek organised a great creative market in one of the parks in town. I discoverd it last year and I'm still a big fan: vintage, retro, handmade, supplies. What's not to love! And on a sunny day like this, I could not be happier. It's so much fun to see some faces behind those webshops.

Veel leuke kraampjes weer dit jaar. En zoveel mooie mensen ook. Moet je zien hoe schitterend deze dames eruit zien!

Many lovely shops this year, once again. And so many bee-ootiful people. I mean, just look at how gorgious these two ladies look.

Ik moest bij de hilarische knuffels een beetje denken aan Barbapapa, maar dat ligt vast aan mij. Ik mocht mezelf niet al te hard naar buiten gaan aan knoopjes en speldjes. Ja ja, ik kan me heus wel inhouden als het moet. Wilskracht dames, wilskracht!

These hilarious stuffed toys made me think of Mr. Blobby, but that's probably me. I didn't allow myself to dig out my purse and buys loads of buttons and pins. See, I can hold back. Really I can. Willpower ladies, lots of willpower!

 

Héle mooie kussens met gehaakte details van dik garen! En ik ben ook gek op de kaarten (rechts) en de theedoeken (rechtsonder) met allemaal leuke Londense stadsbussen erop!

Really lovely pollows with crochet details of very heavy yarn. Like. I also love the cards on the right and the tea towels in the corner, right below. They had red London busses on them!

Als je morgen in de buurt van Utrecht bent: ga vooral even langs, tis supergezellig.

En dan willen jullie zeker ook nog even weten wie de Give Away on? Het was wel weer spannend hoor, 217 deelnemers. WOW!! Echt geweldig. Gelukkig zijn er tegenwoordig hulpjes op het wereldwijde web en hoefde ik geen 217 briefjes te schrijven en te knippen.

And I bet you'd like to know who won the Give Away? It was really exciting again! 217 entrees. Oh my! That's just fantastic. I am so grateful for Random.org, 'cause otherwise I'd have to spend 2 days cutting and writing on 217 strips of paper.
