Blissful Sunday: cycling along fortresses

Er is niets zo lekker als op zondag gewoon op de fiets springen en maar kijken waar je uitkomt. Vandaag liet ik mijn lief de route bepalen en dat had hij goed gedaan. Op steenworp afstand van ons huis fietsten we door een enorm natuurgebied dat we nog niet eerder hadden gezien.

There's nothing I like more than to just jump on my bike and see where it takes me. Today the husbear planned our cycling route and he did a good job. Just a stones throw away from our house we cycled through this amazing nature park that we hadn't visited before.

Ik denk dat als ik op de kaart ga kijken, ik er nog van sta te kijken hoe dichtbij Fort op de Ruigenhoeksedijk is. En het is echt een plaatje: stervorming, omringd door water, een thuis voor uilen en vleermuizen en overdag een geweldige picknickplek. Ik ben echt totaal gefascineerd door de forten en vestingswerken rond Utrecht en de Waterlinie, dat lazen jullie al eerder. In het Zuiden des lands, waar ik vandaan kom, kennen we dat nu eenmaal niet. Rechts op de kaart bij Fort op de Ruigenhoeksedijk was zelfs nog te zien hoeveel land er onder water gezet kon worden in geval van een aanval. Van je grootste vijand (water) je beste vriend maken, hoe Nederlandsch is dat!

When I look at the map, I can´t believe how close the fortress (that's called Fort op de Ruigenhoeksedijk) is to my house. Pff, whoever said anything about living in the city not being green! Anyway, the fortress is gorgious. It's startashaped, surrounded by water, a home for many spieces of owls and bats, and during the day it's a great spot for a picknick. I am completely fascinated my the fortresses and other defense work that are scatterd around the province of Utrecht (as you've read before). I am from the south of The Netherlands and this is completely unknown to me. When I looked at the map at the fortress it was even shown how much land they would put under water to defend themselves. Trust the Dutch to make water, which is our countries greatest enemy, our greatest friend!

En massa's schitterende vergezichten tijdens het fietsen, bovenstaande plaatjes zijn genomen bij Molenpolder en Westbroek. Twee dorpen, op nog geen 10 minuten fietsen van mijn huis. En toch kom ik er veel te weinig!

And whilst cycling there's water, lots of water (often higher than us, gotta love living below sealevel). These pics were taken at two villages less than 10 minutes from my house, yet I go there far too little.

Will walk for money

Journalist is niet het gemakkelijkste beroep ter wereld. En zeker niet de freelance variant. De meeste journalistieke opdrachtgevers staan niet bekend om hun hoge uurlonen en in tijden van crisis (oh, wat hangt die uitdrukking mij toch de keel uit!) is het niet altijd gemakkelijk om opdrachtgevers te vinden. Maar ik heb wel het leukste beroep ter wereld. Althans, dat is mijn bescheiden mening. Ik geloof niet dat ik ooit zo trots ben geweest op mezelf als de afgelopen maanden. Want die opdrachtgevers. Die zijn er. En nog leuke ook!

Being a journalist isn't the easiest job in the world. And certainly not the freelance variety. Most clients that are hiring freelance journalists aren't exactly known for their sky high fees and in these times of economical crisis (gah, I am so tired of talking about the damn crisis!) it's not always so easy to find enough work. But, I am of the humble opinion that I have the most fantastic job. It is to me anyway. I have never been so proud of myself as I've been over the last couple of months. 'Cause work? I found it and great work at that.

Ik voel mezelf echt bevoorrecht als ik mooie plekken mag bezoeken voor mijn werk. Zo nam ik jullie al eens mee op werkreizen naar Boedapest, Brussel en Hamburg. En vanaf deze week ben ik weer op pad, met als voordeel dat ik 's nachts gewoon in mijn eigen bed slaap. Want ik maak een aantal wandelingen langs de Hollandse Waterlinie, eigenlijk gewoon mijn achtertuin dus. En wandelen voor mijn werk, hoe fijn is dat?

I feel absolutely priveledged if I get to go to nice places for work. You probably remember my work trips to Budapest, Brussels and Hamburg. And this week, I am on the road again. With the advantage that I get to sleep in my own bed at night. 'Cause I am walking some trails along the Defense lines of Holland (called 'Hollandse Waterlinie'), which is basically in my backyard. And walking for work, how great is that?

Vandaag wandelde ik rond Fort Rhijnauwen. Als je weleens in Utrecht ben geweest, ken je deze omgeving misschien wel (en ben je echt een bikkel, dan heb je misschien weleens in de kano van Utrecht centrum naar Rhijnauwen gepeddeld). Maar ik was er dus nog nooit geweest. Waarom? Geen idee! Het ligt letterlijk op 20 minuten van mijn huis. Werk was dus het perfecte excuus om deze wandeling te gaan maken. Bij de start van mijn wandeling werd ik al helemaal blij, want het landgoed (met daarop de StayOkay in Bunnik) zag er in alle herfstpracht zo mooi uit.

Today I took the trail around the fortress of Rhijnauwen. If you've ever been to Utrecht, you may recognise this area. Did you know that you can rent a canoe in the city centre of Utrecht and peddle all the way to Rhijnauwen? I've never done it (me and canoes aren't a great combo). Even worse, I have never been here at all. Which is just silly as this is only 20 minutes from my house! So work was the perfect excuse to take this walk. The start of the trail was already picture perfect, 'cause the country estate (which also houses the beautiful StayOkay Bunnik) was looking so pretty in fall colors.

Voor wie niet zo bekend is in Utrecht: de hele regio is bezaaid met forten en bunkers (bij mij om de hoek zijn al 3 forten te vinden). Deze hebben eeuwenlang gediend als verdedigingswerken en zijn voor het laatst gebruikt in de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Nu krijgen steeds meer forten en bunkers een nieuwe functie, zoals museum, restaurant of zelfs B&B. Het fort bij Rhijnauwen werd tientallen jaren met rust gelaten, waardoor reeën, vosjes, uilen en andere dieren het er heerlijk vinden. Het fort is tevens het grootste langs de hele Waterlinie en tijdens mijn wandeling zag ik tientallen bunkers. Sommige worden gebruikt door kunstenaars, maar de meeste liggen er verlaten bij. Of er liggen schaapjes bovenop.

For those who are clueless about Utrecht: the whole region is dotted with fortresses and bunkers, all centuries old. For hundreds of years they were used to defend the region and they were last used during the second World War when the Germans occupied most of them. Now, the bunkers and fortresses are getting a new function, like a museum, restaurant or even a B&B. The fortress of Rhijnauwen is the largest one of the entire region and was left alone for decades. That's why foxes, deer, owls and other cute and not so cute animals love the place. During my walk I saw the fortress but also dozens of bunkers. Some are used by artists these days, but most are just standing there. Sometimes with sheep on top.

Maar ook de landgoederen waar je langs loopt, zijn niet te versmaden: Amelisweerd en Rhijnauwen, lekker verscholen tussen de bossen aan de Kromme Rijn.

Zeker doen als je deze route loopt:
- Loop langs de bloemenpluktuin Amelishof
- Lunchen of thee drinken bij De Veldkeuken (oh, wat rook het daar lekker)
- Bezoek Fort Rhijnauwen met Staatsbosbeheer (1 april - 1 sept)
- Een lekker biertje drinken bij het Theehuis of de StayOkay

Dat deed ik allemaal niet, want ik was wel aan het werk hè!

But also the country estates are so incredibly pretty: Amelisweerd and Rhijnauwen. They are nicely hidden in the woods along the small river of Kromme Rijn.

These are must-do's if you ever visit:
- Visit the pick-your-own-flower garden of Amelishof
- Have lunch or tea with cakes at De Veldkeuken (oh, the smell was so good)
- Visit the fortress of Fort Rhijnauwen with a guide of Staatsbosbeheer (1 April - 1 Sept)
- Have a nice beer at either the Theehuis or StayOkay

But I didn't do all that, I was working you know!
