WIP Wednesday

'Ik regeer wel bij een beetje chaos'. Mensen die mij een beetje kennen, weten dat ik bij deze uitspraak leef. Dat ik het zalig vind om allerlei projecten tegelijkertijd in goede banen te leiden en dat ik er met gemak wat spoedjes tussendoor prak. Een beetje roering in de tent is heerlijk, het zorgt ervoor dat ik niet inkak. Best handig, zo als ondernemer. Want gelukkig valt er een hoop te plannen, maar lang niet alles. Dan is een beetje flexibiliteit wel prettig. Maar af en toe, tijdens een rustig moment, kijk ik zo eens om me heen en grinnik: hm, misschien overdrijf je wel een beetje met al die chaos.

'I rule when there's chaos'. People who know me a little, know that I live by these vey words. I really enjoy taking on several projects, working on them at the same time and making sure the end result of all these projects is perfect. And lastminute work? I can handle that even better. I do love that rush. It makes me feel alive, I guess a rut is the worse thing that could happen to me. The fact that I can handle chaos pretty well, works in my advantage now that I have my own business. 'Cause there's lots of things that can be planned in advance, but there are always these things that jump up at you expecting immediate attention. So it's good to be flexible. But ever now and then I take a moment to look around and grin to myself: okay, maybe I'm taking that whole chaos thing a bit too far.

  
Neem nou de fauteuil in onze woonkamer. Die is meestal het decor van één of ander haakproject waar ik aan bezig ben. Er zit eigenlijk zelden iemand in die stoel, vanwege de stapels wol. Bovenstaande deken in de maak is trouwens weer een heel geval apart (en typisch een gevalletje ultieme chaos), maar daarover later meer... Vanavond komt mijn beste vriendin eten en aangezien het wel zo netjes is om gasten een stoel aan te bieden, zullen de bollen uit de stoel moeten verdwijnen. Dat wordt nog even goochelen. Maar het kan erger...

Now take this arm chair in our livingroom for example. To be honest, hardly anyone ever sits in that chair as there's always yarn in or on it while I work on a crochet project. This blanket by the by, is a perfect example of ultimate chaos. But I'll tell about this odd case in a different post! Tonight my best friend is coming over and since modern etiquette tells us one should offer guests a chair, I guess I have to clean all this up. I'll have to work my magic for that to happen. But it could be even worse...

Want tegen de achterkant van de fauteuil staat nog een tas met wol geparkeerd, met daaruit een granny deken in de maak. Blijkbaar is werken aan één deken tegelijkertijd niet genoeg. Nee, ik moest natuurlijk ook aan een ander project beginnen waar ik zo maar ineens, zonder reden, zin in kreeg. Aan een goede ingeving moet ik dus meteen toegeven. Niet meer te redden, toch?

'Cause there's another bag of yarn and a granny square blanket in progress parked against the back of the arm chair. Apparently, working on one blanket at the time isn't good enough. Noooo, of course I had to give in at the first hunch I got for a new project and start it right away. Seriously, there is no saving me.

Gelukkig valt er nog veel meer te grinniken. Want terwijl ik de voorjaarsbloemen in huis haalde, werd er om mij heen gezucht en gesteund vanwege 'de winter die er nu echt aan komt'. Terwijl het noorden van Amerika en heel Canada zucht en steunt onder enorme sneeuwstormen en ranzig lage temperaturen, krijgen wij de komende twee dagen (ja, twee hele dagen) te maken met temperaturen rond het vriespunt. Ja mensen, de winter valt dit jaar op woensdag en donderdag!  Haal uw husky's maar uit het vet!

Luckily there's a lot more to grin at in my corner of the world. 'Cause while I bought these spring flowers, I listened to the moaning around me 'as winter was now really hitting The Netherlands'. While people in the northern states of the US and the whole of Canada can't get to work because of blizzards and crazy low temperatures, the Dutch are complaining because the next two days (yes, two whole days) it will freeze a few degrees. Yes people, winter will come around on a Wednesday and Thursday this year. Please get your sleddogs from the parking!

Two granny square blankets for a London canal boat

Op zo'n dag dat het buiten geen moment droog is en het maar vies en donker is, moet ik een hele trukendoos opentrekken om fatsoenlijk foto's te kunnen maken. Zo lag ik vandaag op mijn buik middenin de woonkamer en stond ik op het keukentrapje in de slaapkamer. Maar deze dekens wilde ik jullie wel heel graag laten zien.

On a day like this when it doesn't stop raining for one second and it's just dreary and dark, I have to go through loads of trouble to take some decent pics. And that's why I was laying flat on my belly on the living room floor and standing on a small ladder in our bedroom today. And all this because I really wanted you guys to see these blankets.

Want ik heb dus niet één, maar twee granny square dekens om te laten zien! Zien jullie de verschillen? De granny squares zelf zagen jullie al voorbijkomen. Alle 110 (uiteindelijk had ik me misrekend en moesten het er 132 worden, oeps). Het verschil zit hem in de afmetingen: het is één deken van 75 cm x 125 cm en één van 75 cm x 150 cm.

'Cause I haven't made one but two of these granny square blankets. Can you spot the differences? You have seen the granny squares for this project. All 110 of them (well, I miscalculated and ended up maing 132 granny squares, oops). One of the differences is the size. One blanket is 75 cm x 125 cm and the other is 75 x 150 cm.

Die afmetingen zijn behoorlijk vreemd, dat geef ik meteen toe. Maar daar is een hele goede reden voor. Die dekens zijn namelijk voor een woonboot en niet zo maar een woonboot, een echte Engelse Canal Boat (zoals je ziet op de foto). Deze vaak vintage boten zijn een stuk platter dan de Nederlandse variant, varen ook daadwerkelijk en liggen dieper in het water. Ze zijn ook behoorlijk smal. En een vriendin van mij woont in zo'n ding, in één van de kanalen van Londen. Ze kocht een tijdje geleden een Canal Boat en knapte deze helemaal op, met oog voor het verleden. Tijdens haar inspiratie-speurtocht stuitte ze op een foto van een Canal Boat met granny square dekens op de smalle banken. En daar kwam ik om de hoek kijken.

The measurements are really weird, I admit that. But I have a good reason for that. Those blankets will find a new home on a real English Canal Boat (like the one you see in the pic). These often vintage boats are rather flat and small and are deep into the water. On the inside they're very cosy, but not that big. A friend of mine owns one and lives on it in one of the London canals. She bought a Canal Boat a while back and spent quite some time and money renovating it. On her quest for inspiration she stumbled upon a picture of two small couches within a canal boat draped with granny square blankets. And that's when I come in.

Ik gebruikte Stylecraft, dat is zo zacht en lekker om mee te haken. Bovendien is het heel duurzaam. Dat moet ook wel op een boot! De kleuren zijn zeker niet standaard te noemen en ik heb er ontzettend aan moeten wennen. Maar als je zo eens kijkt naar de kleuren van de Canal Boat, die vintage en industriële kleuren (donkergroen, purper, donkerrood, okergeel) dan komt het allemaal wel ontzettend goed tot zijn recht. Ik haakte, lekker losjes, met haaknaald 4,5. Mijn ripple blankets geef ik nooit een randje, die hebben dat niet zo nodig. Maar een granny square deken: die kan juist niet zonder! Ik gebruikte nog verschillende kleuren in de randen en werkte het af met haar patroon. Het geeft de dekens een geweldige vintage uitstraling, die randen maken het echt af.

I used Stylecraft, it's incredibly soft and so great to work with. Also, it's very durable. Well, it has to be on a Canal Boat. The colours are anything but common and I really had to get used to them. But if you look at the colours of canal boats they're all very vintage and industrially inspired. So I picked plums, burgondies, warm green and mustard. I think it'll really fits. I used a 4.5 mm hook so the blankets would be nice and flexible. And I hooked two humongous boarders. I never hook a boarder around my ripple stitch blankets, but I think a nice edging is a must for granny square blankets. I used different colours for the two blankets, but used her pattern to edge the granny square blankets. They really give the blankets a lovely vintage finish.

Ik vind het wel erg leuk om aan zo'n bijzondere opdracht mee te werken. Binnenkort vertrekken de dekens richting Londen. Ik wens ze een plezierige vaart.

For me it was a great assignment and I loved making these blankets. Soon they will leave for London. I wish them plain sailing.
