My new fold over bag

Wie goed oplette, zag hem in de vorige post al voorbij piepen. Ik overdreef namelijk niet toen ik zei dat mijn nieuwe schoenen van Orla Kiely me hebben geïnspireerd tot het dragen van hele andere dingen dan ik normaal zou doen. En daar hoort volgens mij ook een nieuwe tas bij.
Were you paying proper attention in my last post? If so, you may have seen it pop up somewhere in the pictures. 'Cause I wasn't making fun when I told you my new Orla Kiely shoes inspired me to wear some more bold things. And I really believe a new bag is a part of that.
Normaal gesproken heb ik meestal een grote zwarte tas bij me. Zo één waar mijn hele leven in past: telefoon, agenda, notitieboekjes, tijdschriften, tablet, boek en camera. Oh, en een portemonnee. Maar eigenlijk vond ik dat zwarte slagschip gewoon niet bij deze leuke retro outfit passen. Het is gewoon niet Orla genoeg! En dus dook ik in de stoffencollectie. Een bruine canvas heb ik altijd wel liggen en ik stuitte op een stofje waar ik na aankoop eigenlijk altijd vreselijk verliefd op ben geweest. Ik maakte er al eens een pleated tote bag mee, maar nu was het tijd voor iets moois voor mezelf.
Normally I carry a large black leather shoulder bag that is able to carry my entire life. My phone, day planner, note book, magazines, tablet, a book and a camera. Oh, and my wallet of course! But I really didn't think the big black leather beast would match this outfit well. Seriously, it just wasn't Orla enough! So I took a proper look into my fabric collection. I always have some brown canvas laying around and I combined that with a retro fabric that I have had a crush on since buying it. I once used it to make a pleated tote bag, but now it was time for a fun bag for me.
Ik ging voor een fold over tas. Eigenlijk heel simpel. Kan gewoon goed dicht met een rits en ook aan de binnenkant zit nog een zak met rits. Handig, om een deel van dat leven in op te bergen. In principe kun je de tas op twee manieren dragen, maar ik vind het geloof ik het leukst om bruin over print te dragen. Vrolijk én retro. Mocht iemand trouwens een goede tutorial voor een rits in een tas weten, ik houd me aanbevolen. Heb daar weer veel te lang, naar mijn zin, op zitten zwoegen. Tis wel gelukt, maar ik weet zeker dat het gemakkelijker moet kunnen!
I decided to make myself a foldover bag. It's simple really. It closes with a zipper and inside there's a pocket with a zipper too, to put stuff. I like that. It's possible to use the bag in two ways, but I like it best if I fold the brown side over the retro fabric. Nice and happy looking. Oh, and by the by. If you guys know a good tutorial for putting a zip in a bag, please don't hesitate to tell me. I mean, I did it... in the end, but I feel it just took me too long to get it right. I should be able to do this better and quicker.
Wat vinden jullie, is deze tas een beetje gelukt? De moeite om misschien nog eens te maken?

Er is maar weinig voor nodig om mij op een zonnige zondag richting Amsterdam te krijgen, als volleerd provinciaal. Genieten van al die aparte, leuke winkeltjes en boetieks die Utrecht niet rijk is, schrikken van trams (want die heeft Utrecht ook niet) en stiekem wensen dat je een kaart bij je had, omdat je anders de weg kwijt raakt. Een middag Amsterdam is sowieso heerlijk, maar met een reden als die van vandaag ga ik er helemaal graag heen: met een doel! Naar de boekpresentatie van Inghings: Kringloopgeluk.
Honestly, it doesn't take a lot to lure me to Amsterdam on a sunny afternoon like today. I am such a provincial girl. I love browsing all the quirky shops in our capital, trams startle me and I always wish I had brought a map, 'cause I always lose my way. Spending the afternoon in Amsterdam is great, but when I go there with a reason it's even better. Like today, 'cause I went to the book launch of Ingthings book: Thrifted happiness.
Normaal gesproken vind ik dat altijd heel eng: zo maar ergens naartoe gaan waar heel veel mensen zijn die ik niet ken. Met wie moet ik dan praten? En waarover dan in vredesnaam? Maar vandaag kwam dat helemaal goed. Ik zag een berichtje op Twitter van 2 blogsters die vanaf Utrecht vertrokken en ben gezellig met hen opgereisd. De presentatie werd gehouden in een hele leuke winkel in De Pijp: All the luck in the world. Vol met design en vintage geluk.
Normally I think it's very scary: going somewhere where I don't know anyone. I mean: who do I talk to and what about? But today that was a little different. I saw on twitter two blog ladies wre also going and leaving from Utrecht, so I met up with them and we travelled together. The presentation was held in the cutest shop: All the luck in the world. Filled with great design and vintage happiness.
'Pak lekker een kopje en neem maar mee naar huis hoor, ik wil er straks geen meer zien', liet Ingrid meteen weten toen we binnenkwamen en haar feliciteerde met haar boek. Iedereen stond dus lekker thee of koffie te leuten uit een kingloop kopje, als dat niet volgens het thema was!
'Just take a cup and please take it home with you, I don't want to see any left after today', was what Ingrid said when we came into the store and congratulated her on her book. So everyone was sipping coffee and tea from a thrifted cup. Very according to theme!
Een ook de taarten (waaronder deze brownies), allemaal gemaakt door de fameuze Fem, waren niet te versmaden. Eerlijkheid gebied me te zeggen dat ik voor twee stukken citroentaart ging, maar die citroentaart lag niet op zo'n heerlijk vintage bord.
And the cakes (as well as these brownies), all made by the famous Fem, were so good. To be fair, I ate two pieces of lemon cake, but the lemon cake wasn't on such a cute vintage plate.
Het was een supergezellige drukte, met een héle hoop dames, enkele hanen en een paar ontzettend welopgevoede, vrolijke, lieve kinderen. Genoeg stof om over te praten was er zeker, want het bleek dat iedereen elkaars blog wel las of elkaar volgde via Twitter, Facebook of Instagram. Hilarisch!
It was such a fun afternoon and it was so busy, lots of ladies of course, only a few men and some really nice and cute kids. There were enough things to talk about, 'cause many of us found out we read each others blog or we follow each other on social media. Isn't that hilarious.
Maar het draaide natuurlijk allemaal om haar. Want Kringloopgeluk is een heerlijk boek. Deze foto nam ik stiekem, want Ingrid is vreselijk verlegen, maar wel heel vrolijk! Zelden iemand zo onvermoeibaar een persoonlijke boodschap in talloze boeken zien krabbelen.
But it was all about the woman on the right. Her book is really worth it. I had to take a sneaky shot of Ingrid, 'cause she's actually rather shy. But she has a great spirit: she was signing books and writing personal messages like I haven't seen it before.
Mocht je een keer in Amsterdam zijn, ga dan vooral even langs deze winkel. Tis zo leuk, en vlakbij de Albert Cuyp, dus daarna kun je daar lekker overheen banjeren en leuke jurkjes, olijven en noten scoren. Of gewoon een terrasje pakken in de buurt.
If you're ever in Amsterdam, just check out this store, It's very cute. And it's very close to Albert Cuyp market, so after you're done you can go there and buy some lovely olive and nuts, or maybe shop for dresses. Or maybe just have a drink outside in the sun.

I love vintage coffee pots

Inmiddels heb ik er aardig wat verzameld: vintage koffiepotten. Geweldig vind ik ze! Met vrolijke kleurtjes, bloemen, noem maar op. Wat saai zijn dan die moderne dingen van Philips ofzo. Nee, dan die oude koffiepotten, met guitige tuiten, die nog echt op het fornuis moesten. Daar gaat het bij mij dan weer een beetje mis, want ik heb een inductiekookplaat. Maar geloof me, als vaas of bloempot werken die vintage koffiepotten ook prima.
I've collected quite a few of them: vintage coffee pots. I love them! Happy colours, flowers, the lot! How boring are all those current days coffeemakes, by Philips or the like. No, the old ones that you'd have to pout on the stove to brew coffee. Unfortunately I cook on induction, so no brewing coffee with my vintage coffee pots. But really, they make great vases and plant jars as well.
Wat een schatje hè! De zakken zijn afgewerkt met een oranje-rood biaisbandje en heeft extra lange hengsels. Het is een canvas tas, dus ook nog eens lekker stevig. Ik ben er helemaal gek op!
Isn't it adorable? The pockets have a orange-red trim and the straps are a bit longer than usual. This is a canvas bag, so it's nice and strong. I completely love it.

Vorig jaar kocht ik tijdens Van Katoen dit schitterende stofje, want die vintage koffiepotten kon ik niet weerstaan. De combinatie van felblauw, rood, bruin en beige vind ik ook zo heerlijk retro. Niet te versmaden dus. Tot nu toe lag het stofje te wachten op een bestemming, maar ik wist niet zo goed wat ik ermee moest doen. Maar nadat ik vorige week een Catherinholm tas maakte, leek het me leuk om met deze stof ook een retro tas te maken met twee grote zakken.
Last year I bought this great retroi fabric in Ghent, I mean. How could I resist those retro coffee pots! I love the combo of bright blue, red, brown and beige: so retro. I had to take it home with me. But the fabric was waiting for a project. So when I made this Catherinholm inspired bag last week, it seemed like such a fun idea to make a bag like that with this retro fabric.
Isn't it adorable? The pockets have a orange-red trim and the straps are a bit longer than usual. This is a canvas bag, so it's nice and strong. I completely love it.

Mijn oma had een grote donkergroene bank in haar flatje staan. Die enorme bank stond daarvoor natuurlijk in het huis waar ze samen met mijn opa woonde, maar nadat mijn opa ziek werd en opgenomen werd in een verpleegtehuis verhuisde mijn oma naar haar knusse flat. En de bank verhuisde mee. Het was zo'n enorm zacht (want velours, denk ik althans) donkergroen monster met ook kussens erin (geborduurde volgens mij!) en had van die zwarte, donkerhouten poten.
My grandmother had a big dark green couch in her appartment. That big ol' couch used to be in the house where she lived with my grandpa. But after my grandfather fell very ill and had to move into a nursing home, my gran moved into her cosy little flat. And the couch moved with her. It was mighty soft ('cause I think it was velours or something) dark green and had giant dark wood legs. And there were pillows in it too, embroidered ones if my mind isn't playing with me...
Tijdens het haken van dit kussen heb ik veel aan de bank van mijn oma (en dus ook aan mijn oma) gedacht. Zij kon namelijk vreselijk goed haken! Filethaken, kleedjes en knuffelbeestjes. Allemaal heel mooi. Had nog veel van haar kunnen leren. Maar helaas, ze heeft me niet leren haken. Dat heb ik gewoon zelf maar voor elkaar gebokst, met behulp van YouTube en een paar biebboeken. Ik had het natuurlijk veel liever van mijn oma geleerd!
Whilst crocheting this pillow case I thought of my grans couch a lot, and therefor I also thought of her a lot too. She was a crochet world champion, really. Her doilies and amigurumis were so pretty! I could have learned so much from her. Could. Yep, coulda woulda shoulda. 'Cause she didn't teach me. I taught myself how to crochet with some help of YouTube and some library books. I much rather have learned it from my nan of course.
Ze overleed toen ik 15 was. En toen had ik als puber weinig geduld om 'iets saais' als haken te leren. En ik denk stiekem dat mijn oma het geduld niet had gehad om een ongedurige puber de fijne kneepjes van haar ambacht te leren.
She passed away when I was 15. And as a teenager I had little patience to learn 'something dull' like to crochet. And I secretly think that my granma wouldn't have had the patience either to teach an impatient teenager all she knew about her art.
Maar lekker vintage doet dit kussen wel aan volgens mij. Ik heb echt een ontzettende zwak voor deze kleuren. Ik houd van okergeel en donkerrood! En ja, je ziet dus ook donkergroen... zou prima bij die bank gepast hebben. Denk ik.
But isn't this pillow case just lovely vintage looking? I just love these colours. I love mustard yellow and cherrie red. And yes, you also see some dark green there. I think it would've matched my grans sofa just fine.
En ik geef eerlijk toe: een kussen als dit haken is het ideale excuus om weer eens in de enorme vintage knopenverzameling te duiken en er wat leuke exemplaren uit te toveren. Deze zijn zó leuk! En ja voor de oplettenden onder u: de voor- én achterkant zijn gehaakt én helemaal hetzelfde. Toevallig.

Making a magazine (part 2)

Het krijgt vorm, ons Robin Magazine. Al eerder konden jullie lezen over dit nieuwe, superleuke initiatief van twee supercreatieve ladies en ondergetekende. 1 oktober verschijnt het: noteer het in de agenda! En vandaag kreeg het magazine écht vorm, het ging leven. Wij kwamen bij elkaar vandaag om de cover te fotograferen. Een covershoot. Jaja.
It's starting to get a shape and form, our Robin Magazine. You've read about this great initiative of two super creative ladies and yours truely. On October 1st it will be there. Please note it! And today, things became very real for us when we had the cover shoot of our mag. So exciting!
We hadden héle leuke sponsors (zoals Dille&Kamille, Pand 49, Uit eigen streek etc) die ons allerlei superleuke materialen en lekkere dingen leenden die we zo maar mochten gebruiken. We hadden letterlijk kratten en kratten vol met leuke spullen. Serieuze keuzestress!
We managed to get some really great sponsors (Dille&Kamille, Pand 49, Uit eigen streek) who lent us lots of great looking and yummy things to use in our shoot. We seriously had crates and crates full with gorgious cover shoot material. And yes, that caused some stress (I mean... how hard to pick was this!)
Ontzettend trots waren we vandaag in ieder geval op de speciale 'Red Robin' cupcakes, die ons werden geleverd door Bakenversier.nl. Ik bedoel, onwijs gaaf toch?
We were particularly proud of these (especialy baked for us) 'red Robin' cupcakes who were sponosred to us my Bakenversier.nl. I mean, that's totally cool isn't it?
We hebben héél wat 'proef' opstellingen gemaakt, voordat we echt aan de slag gingen met de covershoot. Je moet toch een beetje weten wat werkt en wat niet! Marjolein had stapels mooi vintage servies bij zich en experimenteerde met een echte retro look.
We tried out lots of different poses and looked at what would work and what wouldn't before we really started our shoot. Here's Marjolein (on of the creative ladies) who brought a bus load woth of fantastic vintage china. She was therefor experimenting with 'the retro look'.

Just adorable isn't it? But no, this isn't going to be our cover.
's Middags kwam namelijk Mireille om écht mooie foto's te maken van de hele mooie opstelling die we hadden opgebouwd. Haar enthousiasme was absoluut aanstekelijk! (En ik vond haar laarzen te gek!)
'Cause in the afternoon we invited Mireille to take absolutely gorgious shot of what is going to be our cover. Very exciting and lucky for us, she was very enthusiastic. (And I really loved her boots)
We hebben verschrikkelijk hard gewerkt vandaag. Ja, een tijdschrift maken is niet voor niets een echt vak. We hebben gespeeld met verschillende achtergronden, we hebben geboord en geklommen en héél veel dingen laten vallen (Volgens Kris zijn we niet onhandig, maar vallen er gewoon vaak dingen. En daar blijven we bij!). Maar het was vooral ook héél erg gezellig. Sandra, van Blauwe Druifjes, heeft ons de hele dag met raad en daad (en appeltaart) bijgestaan (TOP!) en we werden op de Veluwe bij Kris héél erg goed verzorgd. Kris organiseerde tot niet zo lang geleden pizza workshops en zij en haar man hebben een prachtige pizza oven in de tuin. Voordeel voor ons: 1) mooie sfeerbeelden voor Robin Magazine 2) heerlijk (zelfgemaakte) pizza tijdens de lunch!
We worked incredibly hard today. Yes, creating a magazine is a serious profession for a reason. We worked with different backgrounds, drilled holes in walls, climbed on things and dropped lots of stuff (according to Kris this has nothing to do with our clumsiness, but with gravity and we're sticking with that!). But most of all we had a really great time. Sandra (who blogs over at Blauwe Druifjes) helped us all day and brought apple pie. And Kris' place, where we had the shoot, was just really nice. Untill not so long ago, she hosted pizza workshop from the fantastic pizza oven she and her husband have in their yard. This had two advantages for us: 1) great atmosphere in all our shots 2) Freshly bakes pizza for lunch!
