A creative guide to Rotterdam

A creative guide to Rotterdam | Happy in Red

Have you ever planned a trip with a friend and then the friend couldn't make it? Well, that was me. I planned a trip to Rotterdam with a friend of mine who lives in Germany, only she cancelled because se was ill. But I had already planned things, so I decided to go to Rotterdam anyway and seek out all the creative and fun hotspots I could find. And I happened to have a great time in Rotterdam!

A weekend of yarn fun

Does anything sound more fun than to talk about yarn, crochet and blogging, all dat long? I have thought about it, but nothing came to mind. Last year I had been a guest of Scheepjes and this year I was invited again. Yay! Not only to meet some other bloggers, but also to give a little workshop about blogging. When I am not a crazy crafter I am a journalist and (web)editor), so even though I was nervous about being in front of a group I felt I had so much useful information to share that I got all excited about it.

But first, just like last year, we were allowed to wander around in crafters heaven: Scheepjes warehouse. The company that owns Scheepjes also owns a haberdashery wholesale, which means miles and miles of buttons, ribbons and other notions. I always feel quite light headed when I walk down the button isles (yes, plural) and this year I particularly fell in love with this retro ribbon. Must think of a project! And oh, all that glorious yarn. It was hard to keep my head cool, I tell you.

Of course we were allowed to fondle the new yarns, is there anything more fun? I took a look a Catona, Scheepjes' new mercerized cotton which comes either in cute small balls (especially for those making amigurumis or small projects) or balls of a regular weight. And I particularly liked the linnen yarn that is currently used for the Scheepjes2015CAL, are you joining in? Unfortunately I am skipping this CAL (even though it looks beautiful), as I have enough unfinished projects laying around already. But I am keeping a close eye and have seen some lovely crochet flowers pop-up. So keep up the good work ladies!

Haha!

But the best part was meeting all these bloggers. Some of them I have been following for years and sometimes they follow me too. It feels like we know each other, but yet we had never met. I had such a laugh when Annelies (from Vicarno's) confessed: 'I pictured your voice so differently', and then we chatted like we had known one another forever. It was also lots of fun to meet the bloggers from outside of The Netherlands, like Dedri who is the mastermind of Sophies Universe. When she showed her finished project I got quite with admiration. To me, this really is a work of art.

Konden we elkaar beter leren kennen.

We had lunch and a high tea at De Paalkoepel, a lovely venue next to a small lake. I must admit that I don't know the north of The Netherlands that well and I thought it was beautiful up there. We just chatted and chatted, got to know each other better whilst having jummy bites to eat.

Atty leerde me een geweldige 'join as you go' methode.

Carmen (Crafty Queens) sat next to me and worked on a project with teeny tiny granny squares qithout complaining.

And silly old me? I worked on my hexagon blanket. Well, to be honest I only made 3 hexagons and spent most of the afternoon giggling, laughing and chatting. It was lovely!

Heb jij ook zo'n fijn weekend gehad? Misschien nog een beetje gehaakt?

Did you have a lovely weekend as well? Did you crochet much?

Something blue... new yarn

Ja, heel erg happy in red.

Those who've been reading my blog know it. I am a little blue. Yes, I am completely happy in red. But there aren't many colors that suit me better than blue. One of my resolutions for the new year is making things that I'll actually wear or use. And I hope these pretty dark blue balls of yarn will help me keep my resolution.

Silvi Scheepjeswol | Happy in Red

Isn't this glorious? The blue is so dark it's almost grey, so I'll be able to combine it with lots of other colours, like light blue and bright blue. The yarn is Silvi by Scheepjes and it's very fluffy: 30% wool, 70% acrylic. The yarn has a bit of an open structure, so I am rooting for a vey light weight end result. By the by, check out all those fabulous winter colors Silvi comes in.

Silvi, Scheepjeswol | Happy in Red

At the moment, I am just swatching. Silvi is quite a bulky yarn and needs to be hooked on 8mm hooks. I don't think I have ever crocheted with such a large hook, like you're crocheting with a lightsaber! On the bright side: I'll be finished soon, which is nice.

Silvi, Scheepjeswol | Happy in Red

I really have to think about a pattern and the stitches, but I do have an idea or two in my mind. So I hope this'll all work out. So, which Silvi color do you like best?

Crocheting and new yarn, but it's for a good cause (no really!)

Like I really need to be persuaded to pick new yarn and start hooking. But in this case I was really excited to look for a fun yarn combo. The yarn kit is a combo of such fun colours, oh and it's for a good cause. I am ready to hook.
Schaapjes Yarn Kit

This yarn is supplied in special limited edition kits to crochet or knit a triangle scarf. Included are the knitting and the crochet pattern, the yarn and a pompom maker. And the great part is that the money from these kits is going to Kika, a foundation that researches cancer on children. A great cause to be supporting this holiday season I'd say. Ánd you get to make something beautiful.

Schaapjes Yarn Kit

The kits contain 5 balls of Scheepjes yarn. Three solids and two multi-coloured ones. This way you'll have one funky looking scarf with a solid base. I like that. I have to say that I kind of fancy the knitting pattern for this scarf, but I am not sure if I am up for knitting...

Blij!

I picked the combo 'Deep Ocean', I just love greens and blues. As a redhead I look quite good with these colors and I think these would work with the pattern. And I have a coat in this exact green colour. Nice huh!

Schaapjes Yarn Kit

These are the color combos to pick from. Aren't they groovy? I was rather charmed as well by Burning Flames, Autumn Leaves and Rain Forest... but the greens and blue always win with me. You can find all the kits at Deramores. So, what do you think? Which one would you pick?

A day in yarn heaven

I can't think of an invitation that I loved more than the one I got from Scheepjeswol, a Dutch yarn brand. Would I like to visit their headquarters for a day and meet other crochet bloggers? I couldn't and wouldn't resist that. Not only because I got to spend a day around yarn, but also because I absolutely love to meet up with other bloggers. I've been following many of them for years and feel like I know more about them sometimes than I know about people I see on a day to day basis. So it seemed like loads of fun to spend a day with them, get to know them a little better and talk about blogging, yarn and crochet... of course crochet!

Scheepjeswol - Stonewashed XL

When I walked to the door I immediately knew I was in craft heaven. There were large stashed of felt, piles of yarn on pretty crochet and knitting books, buttons, ribbons and lace. But it wasn't until we got the grand tour we realised how much of goodness there was. I have never seen so many buttons, zippers, notions and ribbons in my life. The ultimate haberdashery. It was too much to even see in an hour. Some people want to have a sleepover at Ikea, I wanted it here!

And of course yarn, so much yarn. I don't think that I was this greedy and this stressed for choices at the same time, ever. There was just so much yarn, in so many different kinds and colours. It almost gave me hyperventilation.

And I think most crochet and knit books were in stock. I always thought I knew most crochet books, but I ran across some really nice ones from Dutch and foreign authors. I especially liked the little booklet, which is more or less a notebook, but it also has little crochet projects  for on the go. Very clever.

In the afternoon Maaike from CreJJtion gave us a workshop telling us all about photography and styling your pics, which was incredibly useful. Though I must admit, I was a little distracted about the stroopwafels (oh, they shouldn't have put those in front of me!) and this amazing vintage cash register. It was a fabulous day and I can't wait to get my hands on more crochet. Which shouldn't be a problem...

The best yarn, is surprise yarn

If I say that blogging has added so much to my life, I am anything but exaggerating. Because of blogging I've done so many cool stuff, learned som many new things and got to know a bunch of fantatsic people from allover the world. It's these things that make me write and take pocs with joy. 'Cause even though I can't see your faces, I know your out there somewhere.

I love yarn

So one night in Cape Town, after I came back to my hotel room from a long day of playing travel journalist, I found a parcel on my bed stand. The hotel staff kindly placed it there, as well as the little chocolat on my pillow. From the large parcel a lovely wrapped present and card fell  'Baie welkom in my land, ek hoop jij geniet jou tyd hier' (Welcome to my country, I hope you'll enjoy your time here) it read in Afrikaans. The parcel was from Stel, a crochet blogger from South-Africa who's blog I'm following for a while now. Just before my trip I sent her a little message, told her I was coming. She immediately send my lots of advice of great places to visit and asked me where I'd stay in Cape Town. And that's how the parcel ended up on my pillow.

I love yarn

The tree balls of yarn that came rolling out of the wrapping are from two friends of Stel: Stephni and Elaine from Pretoria, who thought it was such a pitty that South-Africa didn't sell a lot of their own yarns. So, they decided to sell they own yarn. They call it 'I love yarn' (seriously, is there any better name!), opened up shop in Pretoria where they also organise crochet-alongs and launched a lovely webshop. These three balls are 70% bamboo and 30% cotton. It doesn't come more organic that this, 'cause the yarn is also handdyed. The yarn is very soft and the colours are just amazing. Check it out, it's called 'Imagine'.

I love yarn

I love yarn

I've thought of a gazillion things to make with these three balls of glorious yarn, but I haven't decided on a project yet. Got any ideas? Anyway, if you feel like yarn gawking (and honestly, who doesn'' like doing that!) hop on over and take a look at I love yarn.

The last three pics are from I love yarn, the first pic is from me: three happy balls of yarn on my hotelroom bed in Cape Town!
