Spending time in creative Thessaloniki

I promised my husband to stay home after I got back from this trip. I was away from home a lot in July, August and September and I have to admit that was looking forward to taking it a bit more slowly after returning. I know, it's the best job in the world. But it still works, and all the flying hours, running around cities and writing many (mány) articles were starting to take its toll. So, I saw this trip as my last trip of the season (for now?), so I kind of wasn't expecting to completely fall head over heels with this city. But I was. So peeps: pack your bags and off to Thessaloniki you go for a Greek adventure.

The great thing about my trip was that I was paired up with a local every day, who took me to all the hidden gems in the city. My guides were absolutely lovely ladies and after mentioning that I loved the creative vibe in the city, they totally melted and told me they knitted/crocheted/sewed like no tomorrow and were delighted I also took pleasure in crafting. They took me to see some amazing shops too. Did you know there is a whole covered market with fabric and notions? A whole market, I had to fan myself. There are also over a dozen yarn shops in the city centre, you almost trip over them. How fabulous is that? You don't see that in Holland anymore, trust me.

But the city had many more surprises planned for me. Throughout the century Thessaloniki suffered many earthquakes and fires, so all sights are on a lower level than street level (as most buildings were built over the rubble of a disaster). So I was just walking down a street, minding my own business, peeking at my map and BAM I'd bump into a beautiful Arc de Triomphe, Roman mausoleum, Byzantine church or a hammam that was no longer in use but had a wonderful coffeehouse. I can't remember having a more gorgeous view than over the rooftops of the hammam whilst having a coffee.

I heard lots of words of praise for the new mayor of Thessaloniki. He's a winemaker from the area and supports a lot of local creative initiatives. He's more than determent to drag his city from the crisis his country is in. For example, he allowed young and struggling artists to use empty buildings as their canvas (after which the buildings would be sold in no time at all) and supports people who want to open a new business. At night I also went out with some locals to have dinner and drinks and discovered that, desptite the crisis that has changes Greece forever, loves their city and does everything to create a loving and supporting community. I have nothing but respect for that.

So, if you feel like hopping on a plane to Greece (and you should), don't skip Thessaloniki.

  2. Hmmm....we've got a site there so I could probably write this off as a business expense (but most likely not the yarn, hahaha).

    groetjes,
    Anita
