A creative (christmas!) guide to Hannover

Ik moet het de Duitsers toch nageven: wat kunnen ze toch leuke kerstmarkten organiseren. Ik was vorig jaar in Keulen en het jaar ervoor in Konstanz. En dit jaar ging ik voor mijn werk naar Hannover. Natuurlijk leuke hotspots zoeken, maar ook naar de kerstmarkten! En ik liep écht totaal per ongeluk tegen een aantal heel leuke wolwinkels aan... goede combi dacht ik zo!

I really have to say: the Germans know how to do a proper Christmas market. I LOVE Christmas markets in Germany. There, it's out in the open. Last year I visited Cologne, the year before that Constance and now it was time to visit Hannover for work, of course, to check out the Christmas markets and all the nice highlights. But I just happened to stumble across some pretty nice yarn shops too. Sounds like an amazing combo, or so I think.

A hidden gem in Germany: Osnabrück

Mijn werk heeft zo zijn voordelen. Omdat ik af en toe eens voor mijn werk op reis mag, kom ik nog eens op plekken, waar ik zelf niet zo snel naartoe zou gaan. Zo kreeg ik de vraag om eens op ontdekkingstocht te gaan in Osnabrück in Duitsland. Ja, Osnabrück. Ik was er ooit eens langs gekomen op weg naar Hamburg, maar verder had ik er ook nooit bij nagedacht. En ik werd aangenaam verrast. Wat een ontzettend creatieve stad.

My work has its advantages. Because I get to travel for work I sometimes go places where I wouldn't think of to go myself. I was asked to check out Osnabrück in Germany. Yes, Osnabrück. I hadn't heard from it either. I once passed the city on my way to Hamburg, but that's it. So I was in for a lovely surprise as Osnabrück turned out to be quite a creative and beautiful small German city.

Vintage and quirky shopping in Düsseldorf

Het is alweer een paar weken geleden dat ik voor mijn werk een dag op en neer naar Düsseldorf ging. Dat is vanuit Utrecht prima te doen trouwens, want met de trein ben je in minder dan 2 uur in hartje Düsseldorf. Nu gaan de meeste Nederlanders er naartoe om te shoppen, en daar is niets mis mee, maar nadat ik een blik op de Königsallee had geworpen (met de dure designers) en de zijstraten ervan (veel Zara, H&M etc) wist ik: dit kan beter, dit kan anders! Dus zette ik mijn journalisten-pet op en ging op onderzoek uit. En ja, het kon zo veel beter... en hoe!

A few weeks ago I went to Düsseldorf in Germany for the day. This may seem weird to you, but from where I live you take a highspeed train and you're in the heart of Düsseldorf within 2 hours. Isn't amazing that I can country-hop like this. Most Dutch people come to Düsseldorf to shop till they drop. Nothing wrong with that, but really you can find H&M, Zara, Gucci everywhere. I had to do better than this! So I put on my journalist-thinking cap and went exploring. And it got better, oh yes!

Ik wandelde vanaf de schattige Altstadt naar de wijk Bilk, een knusse wijk met prachtig gekleurde huizen, gezellige pleintjes en hofjes. Dit is zo'n beetje de studentenwijk van Düsseldorf en dat leek mij de perfecte plek om eens rond te neuzen. Ik bleek het bij het juiste eind te hebben! In de Bilker Allee vond ik een keur aan leuke vintage winkels met goede kwaliteit spullen en mooie kleding. Frauenzimmer was favoriet, alleen al door het gezellige personeel dat graag een praatje maakte en die je alle kon vragen over de verschillende artikelen. De vintage gitaar is favoriet (terwijl ik niet eens gitaar speel. Maar tis zo'n beauty).

So, I walked from the cute old city centre to Bilk, a cute quarter with lovely coloured houses and cosy squares. This is mostly a student place, so I thought that it would be a great place to find some vintage shops. And I was right! In Bilker Allee I found many gorgious places, selling high quality vintage. I liked Frauenzimmer best: the staff was so friendly and the vintage was fantastic. I loved the vintage guitar (and I don't even play the guitar, but it's such a beauty!).

De Lorettostraße is het middelpunt van de wijk en hier vind je een keur aan leuke shops en geweldige restaurants en cafés. Ik liep even binnen bij Saba*S waar je leuke (gehaakte!) kinderspeeltjes vindt en mooie accessoires voor dames, allemaal met retro touch. Yes please!

The Lorettostraße is the heart of the neighbourhood and has many quirky shops, bars and restaurants. I walked into Saba*S, a shop that sells (crocheted!) kids toys and retro women accessories, oh yes please!

En in de zijstraatjes is ook genoeg te beleven. Zo is huiskamerwinkel en concept store Schöne Sachen in de Burgerstraße echt de moeite waard met heel veel leuke artikelen van onafhankelijke ontwerpers, maar ook vintage en upcycelde accessoires voor jezelf of in huis. Ernaast zit Petit Rouge, een geweldige plek om koffie te drinken met een lekker stuk taart erbij (ik nam de rabarber-appel taart, goddelijk) of te lunchen.

If you walk into one of the side streets, there's lots to discover. In the Burgerstraße you'll find a small shop called Schöne Sachen, selling items by young and independant designers and vintage and upcycled accessories. Right next to it is cosy and small Petit Rouge, which is perfect for a cup of coffee and some cake (I picked the rhubarb-apple cake, which was to die for) or to have lunch. 

Op een kwartiertje wandelen van de wijk, ligt een bijzondere buurt van Düsseldorf: Medienhafen, vol met moderne architectuur, net of je in een totaal andere wereld terecht bent gekomen! Ik vond dit vooral erg bijzonder, omdat Duitse steden toch vooral bekend staan vanwege de vakwerkhuisjes, dan verwacht je zo'n modern bolwerk toch niet. Zeker even kijken dus!

Wil je een keertje, net als ik, een dagje naar Düsseldorf? Dat is echt een eitje. Je kunt vanuit Nederland al vanaf €19 naar Düsseldorf met de trein. Wil je nog meer doen in Düsseldorf? Hier zette ik op een rijtje wat je in één dag allemaal in de stad kunt doen.

And from Bilk it's only a 15 minute walk to one of the most special areas of Düsselfdorf: Medienhafen (Media Harbour, because so many media corporations have their office here), with fantastic modern architecture. I found it very special as I often don't think of Germany as a place for top-modern buildings, but I don't mind being wrong, certainly not in this case!

No one does Christmas better than the Germans

Omdat het ons vorig jaar zo goed was bevallen, waren mijn lief en ik vastberaden om zo rond kerst het land weer een paar dagen te verlaten. Vorig jaar was het heerlijk genieten in Luxemburg, maar nu zochten we iets waar het wat minder erhm... doods was. Gelukkig kwamen mijn Engelse vrienden met de oplossing, zij hadden aan de Bodensee een huis gehuurd. Een geweldige plek, maar aangezien slapen op een slaapbank ons minder aansprak, huurden lief en ik een leuk appartementje in het oude centrum van Konstanz, dat de ideale locatie voor een kerstvakantie bleek. Vrienden, kerstmarkten, eten, drinken, shoppen, een prachtige plek. Blijkbaar komen niet-kerstliefhebbers op deze manier het beste en met een grote glimlach de kerstdagen door.

Because last year was such a hit, we decided to go away over Christmas again this year. Last year we had a really good time in Luxembourg, but now we were looking for a destination somewhat less desolated. Luckily some English friends of mine came with the perfect solution. They had rented a house near Lake Costance in Germany. Seemed like a great place, though camping on their sofa bed looked less inviting. That's why we rented the cutest little appartment, right in the old centre of Constance, which turned out to be the perfect Christmas location. Friends, Christmas markets, food, drinks, shopping and a wonderful setting. Apparently, this is the way for non-Christmas lovers to spend the holidays with a big smile slapped on.

In deze tijd van het jaar is het meer als een spiegel, met schitterend uitzicht over de besneeuwde Alpen in de verte. Konstanz ligt in een knusse punt waar Duitsland, Oostenrijk en Zwitserland samenkomen. Voordeel daarvan is dat je er zo bent met het vliegtuig, want er liggen maar liefst drie grote vliegvelden op minder dan een uurtje treinen. Voor ons is dat helemaal een pluspunt, want met ons zielige autootje richting Duitsland was geen succes geweest.

This time of year the lake is as quiet as a mirror and you have gorgious views over the snowy tops of the Alps. Constance is snuggly situated in the corner of the lake where the countries of Germany, Switserland and Austria meet. This has its advantages as there are three large airports on less than an hour by train and the railways of all these countries pretty mouch connect all towns and cities. Such a selling point for us, as we hate driving. 

En ja, kerstmarkten hè. Sinds ik een paar jaar geleden vlak voor kerst in Hamburg verkeerde voor mijn werk ben ik om. Ik denk dat ik al die jaren een verkeerd beeld had door die massale kerstmarkten zo dicht bij de Nederlandse grens. Maar de kerstmarkten die in de kleine dorpen en stadjes worden gehouden (en dus ook wat minder bekend bij toeristen): echt top! En zo ook in Konstanz: kleine kraampjes, waar je handgemaakte cadeauutjes kunt kopen en je kunt warmen aan plaatselijke lekkernijen (manlief was niet weg te slaan bij het varken aan het spit). Sneeuw lag er niet dit jaar, maar daardoor konden we wel extra lang op de kerstmarkt blijven zonder te bevriezen. Glühwein helpt natuurlijk altijd, overal tegen! En het mooie: we hebben geen andere toeristen gezien.

Oh and German Christmas markets, they're just the best. I have to say, I wasn't a big fan until a few years ago when I was in Hamburg just before Christmas for work and the Christmas markets there were just delightful. I guess I was traumatised before by the large, overrun by Dutch tourists, Christmas markets just across the boarder. But the small ones, that aren't too touristy: they are wonderful. And the one in Constance is no exception. Lots of small boots in the shape of Alpine huts where you can buy lovely handmade Christmas gifts and warm yourself with local sausages, egg dishes (such as spätzle), meat (my husband had to drag himself away from the rotating pig that was being BBQed) and of course glühwein... where would we be without glühwein. And the best thing: there were no other tourist in sight.

De heerlijke muffins en gebakjes bij Café Voglhaus vonden gretig aftrek bij ons na het rondkijken en winkelen en 's avonds probeerden we met succes de plaatselijke specialiteit Maultaschen (een soort uit de kluiten gewassen ravioli) uit bij Münsterhof.

After a lot of lastminute Christmas shopping and sightseeing we just needed to tuck into those muffins and cakes at Café Voglhaus and at night we successfully tried the localy specialty Maultaschen (which is something like large ravioli) and Münsterhof.

En dat de bovenste verdieping van het warenhuis compleet volgestouwd lag met schitterende stoffen, tsja dat was gewoon een gelukkig toeval...

And the top floor of the department store being completely stuffed with fabulous fabrics, I guess that was just one lucky coinsidence...
