Crochet inspiration from Turkey

Sometimes I am browsing through my old travel pics, as I am sure you all do sometimes, and I had some incredibly deep thoughts. Like 'Ooh, it's so pretty there' and 'What a shame I don't have that pair of jeans anymore' and 'Why on earth am I not wearing mascara that day?', you know... all phylosophical. And then my mind went to 'Hey look, crochet blankets'. A much better pondering I would think. My eye caught a picture that I took from a bunch of ladies and a girl, sitting by the side of the road, crocheting.

Hoe zag jouw week eruit? Vertel!

This week I:
- Started like lightening on a new crochet blanket. This one has to be done soon, so I better hurry up!
- Had some more daydreams about our trip to Turkey. Oh, how I loved being back in Istanbul. Completely fell in love with the Cihangir and Çukurcuma neighbourhoods that are just like Paris. The vintage, the cafés, the bookstores. Ah!
- Made a flan, and it tasted great! And to think that I just made it 'cause I had a large carton of milk sitting around doing nothing.
- Saw the first little violet appear in my little balcony garden. Love it.

So tell me! What did your week look like?

Yarn shopping in Istanbul

Okay, you better start fanning yourself. I think this blog should come with a bit of a warning, like you see on cigarette packs: reading this blog may cause you to faint. 'Cause it shows yarn, lots and lots of yarn. I know I was fanning myself when writing this blog. So be warned.

Yarn shopping Istanbul

When I visited Istanbul last time I already found the yarn quarter that's called Kürçü Han, so when I visited Istanbul last weekend again for the second time I just had to go there again. Back then I had just started to crochet and blog and had no idea what I was doing. But now I was armed with funds, camera and ideas. Finding the Kürçü Han is not exactly easy. You have to walk into the Grand Bazaar, get completely lost, look for a certain exit and then find yourself in a street with hideous wedding dresses. Halfway of the street with the hideous wedding dresses (they are truly gruesome) you'll see a sign saying Kürçü Han and then you turn left and find yourself in yarn heaven.

To get the picture even clearer. It was freakishly hot the day we went to Kürçü Han. About 37C, so the perfect day to shop for yarn in cramped little shops without any aircon. Just perfect. Within a minute and a half, my oh so nice husband was looking like he was going to explode. So I parked him in the shade somewhere. And I went on my merry way, drowning in my own sweat. This to the bemusement of all the salespeople, I think I must have been the first foreigner they saw in months. Oh well, I am always there to entertain.

But just look at this... isn't it just... wonderful. Yarn, yarn and more yarn... everywhere I looked on the first ánd second floor! isn't this like the most perfect day out there is? I just walked a few rounds, oooh-ing and aaah-ing everywhere, pretending I didn't sweat like a pig, and tried to tell people using my hands and feet that I was, in fact, a crocheter and not a knitter ('cause everywhere I went people starting ripping English knitting books from their wrappers, oi!).

Most yarn you'll find in the Kürçü Han is acrylic, but you don't have to be afraid that it's those 'squeeky' acrylics that you find in cheap yarn stores. No, there were so many kinds of acrylics, soft and shimmering and lovely. But also bamboo yarns, cottons and silks. Telling you I was greedy and completely stressed with all the choices is the understatement of the year, I was almost in a coma with the choice of all these yarns.

Eventually, I went back to the Nako-store. Nako is Tukeys biggest yarn brand and they have a lot of choices. Last time I bought a satin type of yarn, just two balls. Seriously, what can you do with just 2 balls of the same colour?? Lucky for me, the exact same yarn still existed and there were some fabulous natural shades available. In my basket, they went. And I bought some lovely colours of his 'Apple' yarn. It's bamboo, you hook it on a 5mm hook and it's SO soft. Lovely! The best part was that, since I and the husband travel with backpacks and mine was full already, the yarn ended up in my husband's hand luggage. Anything to declare, sir?

This week I:
  • Made hummus using my brand new KitchedAid (my clever husband surprised me with it for my birthday). It tasted so good with Turkish bread and cous cous salad.
  • Ate the first Dutch strawberries of the season. They are the best in the world.
  • Used a blog planner for the first time. With 2 blogs to maintain and a fulltime job, a proper blog planner was long overdue.
  • Started planning our summer vacation. We're going to travel around Turkey and will end our trip in Istanbul.
  • Wrote about the Maboneng Precinct, thé place to be in Johannesburg at the moment, where I stayed during my South-Africa trip.
  • Joined Instagram, it's most addictive.
  • Finally washed and ironed this fantastic fabric, how great are those bikes on it! I do have a plan for it, but I don't know if I have enough fabric for it.
  • Bumped into this cute little booklet in my bookcase, which I completely forgot about. It has sewing patterns for tunics. Must make one this summer!

Three 2 colored totes

Inspiration is an odd thing, isn't it? Sometimes when you have time on your hands you really wish it would come, but nothing. And sometimes it comes all at ones and you need more time to finish all the projects in your head. This week, the latter was the case. And that was a good thing, 'cause I really needed to stock my shop.

3 tote bags

Natuurlijk! Tassen. What else.

A while a go I bought this roll of different fabrics and I loved them, but was pretty clueless what to do with them. Such a shame, 'cause the fabric was rather expensive. But this week I figured it out. How could I have missed it! Bags, of course. What else?

Aqua and red tote bag

The first one to roll from the machine was this tote in aqua and red. Lovely color combo I think.

Pink and red tote bag

And this is the second tote bag. I just love the fabric with the clouds and birds. It's so sweet. And before you ask: I have no idea who designed the fabric. If someone has a clue: please let me know.

Blue tote bag flowers

There is a story about this bag (yay!), 'cause the flower fabric wasn't on the fabric roll. I bought it in Istanbul, at the Grand Bazar. I think this fabric is used to make head scarves normally, as it isn't really heavy. But it sure is pretty. I really liked it with this blue fabric I found at Ikea.

Tote bags Happy in Red

And now they're all sitting nicely together in my shop. And since there are more fabrics from the lovely roll I think more bags like these will make an appearance soon.

Lovely Turkish yarn at Kürkçü Han

Tucked away behind the Istanbul Big Bazaar, behind a busy street full of enormous and colourful bridal shops is the Kürkçü Han: the Han (shop area) of fur traders, fabric and yarn stores. Yes... YARN!

I blogged about this area just before we went to Istanbul and I was determined to find it and take a look around. The Big Bazaar and the area around it is a maze of little streets and squares literally packed with little shops, full with negotiating Turks and tourists. It's mad! But I didn't give up and found it!

Busy isn't it? And there in the background, on the first floor is the Nako store. Nako is a very famous brand of beautiful Turkish yarn. It was so great!

Can you imagine me getting lost here? I bet you can! All those yarn and fabric shops. Just lush. Totally lost the boyfriend halfway! Thank heaven he was kind enough to take pictures of the madness around him!

And do you remember me telling you that I couldn't possibly find room in my backpack to take home yarn? Well... I found the space! Don't ask me how, but I took back this gorgeous yarn. All from Nako! Some cotton, some bamboo and lots of soft acrylic yarn. Pretty colours!

They sold packages with little balls of yarn, they are only 10 grams (36 meters) and I loved the glittery yarn. Already started hooking some granny squares for Kyōyū kyōyū - share with it, so great!

~Now, what to make with all this glorious yarn?~

Beautiful Istanbul

I can't really tell you how much I have enjoyed Istanbul. So instead of trying to explain it, I though I'd just show it.

This is the Blue Mosque. Gorgious isn't it. Inside was even better!

Aya Sofya, outside and in. The inside was mesmerizing, the old byzantin drawings from early Christian times were mind blowing.

And all the Turkish goodies were just too pretty! I did manage to buy some really gorgious things (yes, they even fitted into my backpack. Go me!). Will show you later on.

~All in all we've had a fantastic citytrip Istanbul!~

Turkish tea

Enjoying Turkish tea in the sun, how wonderful. They sure know their tea in Turkey and I love the glasses and the pottery. They use the bowl to put sugar cubes in. Doesn't it just make you smile. I am smirking from ear to ear.

Off to Istanbul!

I've said it before: I love to travel (well, who doesn't), but for me it's a passion and I am so lucky that sometimes I get to publish my travel stories in books and magazines.  I'm also the owner of a travel website: Mooistestedentrips.nl (in Dutch) about the best cities in the world. You're welcome to take a look.

But this time I am going to travel just for me, for fun and relaxation. And the destination is a world unknown to me: Istanbul.

A city that lives between East and West and is the home to 1001 cultures. Sounds like a right fairytale to me.

Uh oh, do I see stashes and stashes of yarn in this picture? What a dangerous place Istanbul is ;-) It's a good thing me and the man are backpackers and I need to travel light. But maybe just one tiny ball, as a souvenir? Or maybe two?

~Have a nice sunny weekend~
