Loving the imperial cities: Meknes and Fez

Those who follow me on Facebook have perhaps seen me crochet in a Riad. Isn't that the best: after playing tourist an entire day look, just sink into some cushions, put your feet up and crochet a little. It's a good way to process all the things you've seen and done all day.

Meknes - Morocco

We stayed for a day in Meknes, one of the smaller Imperial cities. Small was good in this case as you won't get lost so easily and no one is bothering you. And it was quiet when we were there as it was a Friday and after Friday prayers a lot of Muslims call it a day. Like we do on a Sunday I guess. The best reason to just take it slow for us too. Not a bad plan with a roof terrace like this.

Volubilis - Morocco

Volubilis - Morocco

Echt een must-see.

On the way to Fez we called at Moulay Idriss (an Muslim holy place) and Volubillis, a Roman settlement with mosaics that were perfectly kept. 1700 years old and still amazing. If you ever paid proper attention in your history class then you'd definately could make out the Roman gods in these works of art, a must-see I think.

Fez - Morocco

Tips over Marokko

Now, one thing I adore about Morocco so far is staying in Riads. Riads are old palaces and now often restored to hotels. Lots of mosaics in the courtyards, as well as the fountains and sometimes even swimming pools, are still original. Along the courtyard are the spacious rooms. With this Riad the ladies of our travelling company outdid themselves! We are celebrating our wedding anniversary here and t celebrate that there was a bottle of wine in our room (quite the exception in Morocco) and we have a jacuzzi in our room. Oh, how great is that. And to top that, there are three turtoises walking the courtyard (very friendly and cute) and we wake up to this breakfast every day. Well good morning to us!

Fez - Morocco

Fez - Morocco

Fez is absolutely worth the visit! If you ever have the chance (and many European budget airlines fly to Fez these days) just go go go there! The Medina (the old city with a maze of streets and markets) is the oldest and biggest in the world. Getting lost is normal, as well as getting spoken to by all the salesmen and bargaining for getting the best price on handmade goods. There are also beautiful Kuran schools, gardens and mosques to visit. Today we took a guide to take us into the Medina, as we were getting a bit tired of getting lost all the time, and he took is to fantastic workshops. We saw beautiful leather goods be painted and made and we also visited a workshop where silk scarves were made, even my husband bought one! And even though we get to stay another few days here, it's safe to say... we're sold.

One year

One year ago there was a tiny group of people that escorted me and my husband. To city hall! We hardly told anyone we were getting married. We didn't want a fuss, we didn't want an over the top thing. We just wanted to have a lovely day with the people we love the most.

And today that's a year ago. Wow, a whole year, Time flies. The last couple of years I just felt life was just something that happened to me. But last year it struck me: I have to do what I love to do best: write en create. So I decided to just go out and do it: write nice stuff, make nice stuff and see gorgious places (and write about them). So scary, but in an exciting way. 'Cause you know, Marjolein, Kris and me setting up a magazine. How utterly thrilling is that!

And for my husband it was also an exciting year. He graduated from college. When I met him 5 years ago he had no idea what he wanted to do with his carreer. But then he found a job where he really did what he always wanted to do, so he also decided to finish college. And he did so whilst also working fulltime. I am so proud of him.

When you're both doing exciting stuff, you may forget a little about each other. But luckily that was not the case for us. We've been married a year today and it's hard to remember not being married! That said, I am still sniggering whenevr I have to introduce that holarious bloke of mine as 'my husband'.

So tonight, let's raise a glass to love.

2011 wrap up

It's almost over and done, 2011. Just a few more hours of count down and then it's the start of a new year. I always look forward to a new year and I'm always very curious to what it will bring. But of course I have to get sentimental first and say a proper goodbye to 2011.

So much has happened in 2011. I started this blog (hey, kinda important!), 'cause I wanted to learn how to crochet and sew. So I could wear and give away handmade things instead of always buying things from a store. I saw so many great blogs from sweet (and funny, you guys are often hilarious) people, great ideas and gorgious creations. I hope my blittle blog will add something.

I taught myself to crochet with the help of a book from the library, some movies on YouTube and one ball of navy blue wool and hook 5 mm. The crochet bug has definately bitten me and trust me, there's a lage number of yarn balls and crochet hooks now living with me.

I even got to finish some blankets! If you had told me that at the beginning of this year I wouldn't have believed you. But I did, several! Can you imagine. I am so happy with the results. I also crocheted so much that I was able to make some patterns to share with you.

I also took sewing lessons and bought my first sewing machine! The machine and me didn't always get along in the beginning (why are there all these loops? Why does it keep eating my thread?) but we've gotten to know each other and I think me and my sewing machine have made some great stuff this year. For starters (as you know, my favorite...): bags, lots of bags.

But of course I've sewn other stuff too, it's just so nice to create all this stuff!

I was also fortunate enough to travel this year. I love to travel and I was so lucky to visit some amazing countries: Croatia and Turkey. I visited Brussels for work (totally awesome) and I made a trip to Rome... that was my honeymoon!

Ja! In september.

Yes, a honeymoon! My love proposed to me and we got married this year. In September. We had a really small wedding that not many people knew about. And I loved every second of it.

And my weddingdress? I bought that on Etsy! I just love all the fantastic, creative people I've 'met' because of this blog.

Nou, sentimenteel of sentimenteel (Kleenex moment!)?

Sentimental? Moi? (Should I pass around some Kleenex?). I just have one more thing to say: I just love that you guys keep visiting my blogs and leaving those sweet comments. It's fantastic. Thank you so much. I will continue to read your blogs and watch all your wonderful creations in 2012.

~Have a fantastic 2012 everyone!!~

Honeymoon

... and the Give Away winner!

On our way to Utrecht City Hall
(There were 20 people behind us, I swear!)

We just got back from our honeymoon to Rome! And oh my... if you ever get to honeymoon, go to Rome! For us it was a big surprise as we didn't arrange something. My parents, sis and brother in law planned the whole thing. They got us free from work and everything!

So two days after we got married, we flew to Rome. What a fantastic experience and what a city of miracles! Ancient temples, tons and tons of art work by the greatest artists that have ever lived and wonderful food. Even though Rome is HUGE, you don't feel that at all as the streets and squares are small and friendly.

Needless to say: we had a fantastic time! We landed yesterday, but I really have to say that my feet still haven't touched the ground since we got married last week. I am not the goo-ey type and am not even a real girly girl (I always wanted to go to the Tour de France instead of getting married, haha!) but I have to say: it's a mind blowing experience!

Did I make your eyes roll? Maybe even gag a little? I can't blame you, haha!
I'd be the same... so, lets do something fun for you guys and announce the winner of the Give Away!!

The winner of the Goodbye Summer Give Away is...

By Ieke!!

Congratulations hon! E-mail me your address and the goosdies will be coming your way!!

~Hope you all have a good weekend!~

La vita e bella

The last few days have been a rollercoaster of emotions! Because last Friday, me and my love....

~Got Married!!~

We had a really small wedding in Utrecht, with just 20 guests. The most important people that we love to bits. It was intimate and relaxt, just like we had hoped.

We had not planned a honeymoon, as we are saving up to go travelling again next year to a far and pretty place.

But... my parents, sis and her bf had different plans with us. So tomorrow, we are leaving for ROME on our honeymoon. For a week!!

Picture: La Dolce Vita at the Trevi Founain in Rome!

Needless to say we are completely shocked, baffled and moved to tears! Yesterday and today have been all about getting Rome guidebooks, making reservations to see Vatican City, The Borguese Museum and the Colosseum... and packing our bags!

I guess I will be seeing you again in a week :-) Who knew!

If you still want to enter my Goodbye Summer Give Away (with FABULOUS Croatian goodies!), please enter!! I was planning to announce the winner on the 15th but apparently I'll be eating gelato then ;-) So I'll announce the winner of the Give Away the 17th op Sept.

Ciao!!
