Call the midwife, crochet blanket
donderdag 2 april 2015
I started this crochet blanket, just for the sake of making something new and trying out a new pattern. Though I guess my wee addiction to BBC's 'Call the midwife (gah, what would I do without Netflix) may have something to do with it. Tell me, are you also smitten with Sister Monica Joan and Chummy?

A ripple stitch blanket, my favorite go-to project
dinsdag 29 juli 2014After crocheting The Dachshund, which constantly had me on my toes with all the stitch counting ( am no amigurumi genius), it was just so good to start my favorite go-to project: a ripple stitch blanket. I can almost make one with my eyes closed. When I make a ripple I just get into the pattern and it's just fabulous to make one whilst watching TV (I made this one whilst watching the Tour de France).

Many crocheters use Attic24's ripple stitch pattern, but I am a true follower of Le Monde de Sucrette's pattern. To me, but that's just my humble opinion, it requires less counting and it's easier to get into a sort of rythm. I used Stylecraft to make this blanket. Acrylic yarn has many advantages. One of them being that you're able to chuck this blanket in the washing machine, if needed. Another being that acrylic is ant-allergic, which is great for people who are sensitive to wool and sensitive baby skins (and I have a hunch this one is going to end up with a baby). And just to show I get lost in making a blanket like this: when I was measuring the blanket (I do that every few rows or so) I found out I was done already! Didn't see it coming, at all!

This blanket was custom ordered, I had made one exactly like this before (in case you thought it looked familiar). But I also have crochet blankets in my shop that are ready to be posted to you!
So, I am curious. What's your to-go project?

A rainbow blanket in spring

Everytime I crochet a blanket I wish that I could keep it myself. But it's for the best that I don't, because our house would be too small if I did. So I am over the moon to get a really cool custom order every now and then. It keeps me hookin'. The last one of these blankets went to Australia and this one will make a stopover in the UK before going to Dubai.
To Dubai, I hear you think. You mean Dubai with all the sand, deserts, temperatures that make you melt, more desert, sand and camels? Yep, that Dubai. But apparently everyone in Dubai has their airconditioners running freezing and newborns just don't do well with those cold indoor temperatures. They need warm little fists and feet. So a warm snuggly blanket is needed.
To be honestL I just love making this blanket. 'Cause I love making baby and childrens blankets that are not too gender specific. I love the idea that both boys and girls could enjoy cool and bold crochet blankets. So please mothers of this world, stop dressing your boys in blue and your girls in pink only. Not only do your kids miss out (your daughter may want to become a pilot, how's she gonna do that wearing a dress with a petticoat!), but you're also selling all the other colours of the world short! The little boy that will get this blanket will be covered in rainbow colours.
I made this blanket using my own pattern and used most of the same colours as last, with the odd exception here and there (because my yarn collection leads its own life, colourwise). It was just so lovely to sit on the couch, with a huge bag filled with yarn and pick a new colour over and over again. So, what are you making at the moment?

Greek granny stripe blanket tadaaa!
woensdag 26 september 2012
I started this crochet blanket in Greece, as you probably read. I just sat there, on my litle balcony in Naxos hooking along whilst watching the flowers, enjoying the sun, listening to the kids playing in the street (there was this kid Alexi that was particularly populair with the girls in the neighbourhood!). And later on, I worked some more on the blanket in the Dutch cold. No more holiday mood left unfortunately, but I loved this project just as much.
And now here it is: tadaah! I really love this blanket and I enjoy these colours a lot. They remind me of all the fruit stalls I saw on holiday. Apples, lemons, limes, grapes, water melon, nectarines, peaches. I think they're all there in this blanket.
Langer plezier ervan dus.
I really had to hook on for a bit,'cause this turned out to be quite a large baby blanket. 84 centimeters wide and a meter long. This is quite larger than the average baby blanket, I know. Though, it shoudn't be a problem I think. I mean, baby grow, or so I've read, and this means that the baby blanket will also last when the baby turns into a little toddler. More fun to be had!
Now many of you want to know stuff like: what yarn did you use, what colours and how did you pick those. Well, about the latter I can write a whole post, and maybe I will sometime, but about the first thing I can be clear: I used 100% cotton. I used different brands. Normally I don't, but it just happened that way this time. Anyway, the yarn is compatible with Catania Cotton. And I use crochet hook 4 mm. I mostly do really. No idea why.
