Wedding pillows from Mollie Makes Party & Weddings

Als ik zo eens om me heen luister, lijkt het wel alsof mensen in het weekend niet anders doen dan trouwfeesten aflopen. Bij ons is dat eigenlijk niet zo, soms lijkt het wel alsof wij de enige zijn die getrouwd zijn. Nu ben ik ook niet zo van de massale feesten en ik houd wel van rustige weekenden, dus mij hoor je niet klagen. Maar als je dan eens wordt uitgenodigd voor een bruiloft én je mag ook nog eens getuigen zijn. Dan trek je alles uit de kast!

When I listen to my friends and acquaintances it seems like people don't do much more these days than hope from wedding to party every weekend. That's not the case for is. It seems like we are the only one in our group to be married. I have to admit, I am not into big parties and crowds and I really enjoy my quiet weekend. So I am not complaining! But, when I was invited to a wedding and me Maid of Honour... well, you go all the way, don't you?

Ik ontving het boek Mollie Makes Party & Weddings alweer een hele tijd geleden en meteen ging er bij mij een belletje rinkelen. Ik zou uit dit boek best iets kunnen maken voor deze trouwerij, er stonden zo ontzettend veel leuke projecten in! Van ringkussens en uitnodigingen en van gastenboeken tot taarttoppers en bedankjes. Nu had ik te maken met creatieve mensen die heel goed wisten hoe zij zelf een feestje moesten regelen, dus helaas vielen veel ideeën al in het water. Maar één idee paste perfect bij wat ik graag wilde geven aan het bruidspaar!

I recieved Mollie Makes Party & Weddings a while ago and I immediately thought that it would be fun to make something for this particlar party. I mean, there are loads of great ideas. Ring pillows, invitations, guest books and cake toppers, all super lovely. Unfortunately (for me, that is) I was dealing with some pretty creative folks who know damn well how to organise a great party, so many of my ideas were no good. But one idea matched up perfectly with what I already had in mind as a gift. 

Ik was namelijk van plan om het bruidspaar lekker na te laten genieten van hun mooie dag. Er kwamen badjassen met hun naam erop en ik regelde een champagne ontbijt op bed. Dus wat was er dan leuker dan wegzakken in de bruidskussens die ik in Mollie Makes had gezien, ze waren stoer en grappig. Daar houd ik van!

I was planning to plan a bit of an relax-morning after the wedding for the newly weds. I already ordered some custumized bathrobes and ordered a champagne breakfast to be delivered to them. So what would be better than to sit back and relax 'the morning after' and sink back in the wedding pillows that I had seen in Molly Makes Party & Weddings, they were cool and funny. I like that.

Ik kocht leuke hartjesstof op de Utrechtse stoffenmarkt en band met pompoms eraan. Vilt heb ik eigenlijk altijd wel in huis, dus het was een kwestie van gaan, gaan, gaan. Dacht ik. Allereerst besloot ik... om me niet aan het patroon te houden. Ik heb een oprechte hekel aan naaien met de hand. Ik heb er het geduld niet voor en kan het eigenlijk ook niet zo netjes. Dus die namen op die kussen, dan ging hem niet worden! Maar dat hart-patroon kwam goed van pas. Die kopieerde ik op twee verschillende groottes en besloot deze op de kussens te naaien (jaja, met de hand!). En dat zag er in ieder geval al prachtig uit.

Maar toen kwam het drama met de pompoms. Zoals je wel kunt zien op de foto, zit er niet zo heel veel ruimte aan de band om deze op de stof te naaien. Ook zat er in de band een beetje rek, waardoor het lastig op het katoen spelden was. Het ligt vast aan mij (of aan de pompoms die ik had gekocht), maar zelfs met de ritsvoet kreeg ik deze pompoms er niet netjes op. Het rekte en bobbelde en ik kon wel janken. Ook het eraf halen, was verre van een pretje. Maar wie bewaart heeft wat, want ik had nog rode en roze paspelband liggen!! En dat ging als een zonnetje gelukkig en kwam het toch nog goed.

I bought heart patterened fabric at the Market in Utrecht and some pompommed ribon to make the pillows. I always have felt laying around, so that wasn't a problem. Now the first thing I decided was... not to do it like it's shown on the pattern. I don't like hand stitching and I never get it nice and neatly, and rubbish hand stitching won't do for a wedding gift, so I decided to skip the names. But the heart template came in handy, I copied it twice in different sizes and decided to go with that. I had stitched it on (not too shabby!) and it looked quite nice!

But then came the drama of the pompoms. As you can see in the picture there's not much 'meat'  to work with (as in: not much room to stitch it to the fabric) and I don't know if it was me or if I had just bought the wrong kind of pompom ribbon, but I just couldn't stitch it on nicely for the life of me. The ribbon was also a little stretchy and when I tried to stitch it on using my zipper food, it turned out horribly ugly. So I took it all off again, which was also a nasty task. Lucky for me my spare room is like a little haberdashery and I had some red and pink piping laying around and those worked perfectly. So, it all worked out in the end. 

Je kunt dus met recht zeggen dat het een 'labour of love' was, maar gelukkig werden de kussen en de rest van de cadeaus erg goed ontvangen. En daar gaat het uiteindelijk om! En geeft toe, ze zijn behoorlijk goed gelukt, toch?

So, I can definately say that this was a labour of love. Lucky for me the gifts, including these pillows, were very well recieved and the couple was very happy with them. And that's all that matters right? And I have to say: they look really cute, don't they?

Tetris pillows

Herinneren jullie je het computerspelletje Tetris nog? Voor de Nintendo Gameboy. Da was dus écht wa van vroegâh hè. Jaren '90. Toen koophuizen nog in waarde stegen, kabinetten 4 jaar bleven zitten en schaatsers nog gewoon uit Friesland kwamen.

Do you remember the computergame Tetris? It was played on the Nintendo Gameboy. Oh so nineties, yeah baby. Vintage! When real estate was still worth something, governments would always last 4 years and when speedskaters were all from Frysia. 

Maar goed, Tetris dus. Dat computerspelletje met al die blokken die je in elkaar moest passen. Mijn zus en ik hadden allebei een Gameboy. In eerste instantie had alleen mijn zus er één. Mijn zus houdt echt van spelletjes. En ik eigenlijk niet. Maar omdat mijn zus er één had, moest ik er ook één. Zoals dat gaat. Met een snoertje kon je die Gameboys aan elkaar maken en dan kon je tegen elkaar Tetrissen. Mijn zus en ik hebben op die manier behoorlijk wat uurtjes op de bank doorgebracht.

But yeah, about Tetris. It's the computergame which made you fit all these blocks together. My sis and me had a gameboy. Well, first my sister only had one. She loves pplaying games. I don't. But since she had one, I had to have one too. As that goes. With this little cable you could connect the two Gameboys and then you could play Tetris against one another. My sis and me spent many hours in the couch doing this.

En waarom ik nu zo over Tetris aan het beppen ben? Omdat deze stof me daar zo aan deed denken toen mijn vriendin deze stoffen uitkoos voor haar kussens. Volgens haar viel het allemaal reuze mee, maar toen ze thuis kwam en de stof aan haar vriend liet zien, zei deze: Hé, Tetris! Dus... 

And why oh why am I yepping about Tetris? Because this fabric reminded me of Tetris when my friend picked it out for her pillows. According to her I was overreacting, but when she showed the fabric to her boyfriend he said: Hey, just like Tetris. So...

De slimme lezer dacht misschien al.. hé, jij was toch een paar dagen geleden getraumatiseerd door kussens? Nou, inderdaad. Dat zijn dus deze kussens. Voor de duidelijkheid: het maken van de slopen zelf was een eitje, zelfs met een rits erin. Maar die binnenkussens, met die veren. Ugh. Krab, krab, krab. Trauma.

And you clever readers already noticed that a few days back I was traumatised by pillows. Well, it's these pillows! Not the covers of course, those were easy to make. Even with a zipper! But those insert pillows, filled with masses and masses of feathers. Shudder! Scratch, scratch, scratch. Properly traumataised for life.

Granny square pillow case tadaaah!

Ja, weer een déjà vu hè, dit kussen. Tis op zich best een grappig verhaal. Ik maakte een tijd geleden dit kussen voor mijn webshop. Ik haakte het kussen met Drops Paris: echt geweldig katoen dat verkrijgbaar is in vele vele kleuren. Kijk bijvoorbeeld maar eens bij Echt Studio, alle kleuren Drops Paris hebben ze daar. Om hebberig van te worden!

Oh I know, this pillow case is such a matter of déjà vu! It's a funny story though. A while a go I made this pillow case for my Etsy shop. I used Drops Paris yarn: absolutely great cotton and available in so many lovely colours.

Dus toen ik een e-mail ontving met de vraag of ik in opdracht een kussensloop wilde haken (túúrlijk!) ging ik ervan uit dat de dame in kwestie kleuren zou gaan kiezen uit de enorme collectie kleuren van Drops die er zijn.

So when I recieved this e-mail asking me if I wanted to crochet a custum granny square pillow case (of course!) I was thinking that the women ordering the pillow case would pick some colours from the Drops Paris collection.

Maar nee, ze wilde exact hetzelfde kussen! Grappig toch. Vandaar dat het absoluut klopt als je denkt dat je dit kussen al ergens eerder hebt gezien. Ik maakte er inderdaad al één! Maar deze is helemaal nieuw en zojuist afgemaakt.

But no, she wanted the exact same pillow cover, using the exact same colours! So if you think 'hm, I've seen this pillow cover before', then you're completely right. I've already made one! But this one is brand new and I have just finished it.

Maar ongelijk kan ik haar niet geven! Ik denk bij de kleuren van deze kussenhoes altijd aan zo'n weiland met hoog gras waar wilde bloemen in staan te wuiven. Wel een romantisch idee!

But I have to say: I do love these colours. It makes me think of a meadow with high grass with lots and lots of wild flowers blowing in a soft breeze. Yes, I can be quite the romantic sometimes.

WIP Wednesday

Oké, ik moet toegeven dat ik het lastig vind om me van de televisie weg te rukken. Met al dat Nederlandse eremetaal op de Olympische Spelen. Daar word je toch bijna Mart Smeets van hè, want wat doen 'we' het goed. Maar gelukkig is het nodig om totaal nutteloos voor de televisie te hangen. tegelijkertijd haken kan ook.

I have to admit that it's hard for me to pull myself away from the television these days. The Dutch are doing very good at the Olympics and I am getting all patriotic! Lucky for me I can actually do something whilst glued to the Olympics: I can crochet.

Ook al is het nog middenin de zomer, ik kijk toch alvast wat vooruit naar de herfst. Mijn favoriete seizoen. Ik koos voor een nieuwe kussenhoes mooie herfstachtige, stemmige en vintage geïnspireerde kleuren.

Even though it's still summer, I am already looking ahead towards the fall. My favorite season. For a new crochet pillow cover I choose vintage inspired, autumny colours, completely feel-good I think.

Ik haak met Drops Paris, echt een aanrader. lekker dik en ontzettend sterk. Maar toch zacht. Als het om katoen gaat, vind ik het een van de fijnste garens om mee te haken. Voor elke kant heb ik 49 vierkantjes nodig, dus ik heb nog wel even voor de boeg. Maar is er na de Olympische Spelen nog wat leuks op tv om bij te haken?

I am crocheting with Drops Paris yarn. One of my favorite cotton yarns. It's strong and yet very soft. For each side of the pillow cover I need 49 squares, so I am not done crocheting just yet. But, tell me... what can I watch on tv after the Olympics end, to crochet along to?
