Trust me to find two yarn shops in Budapest

Laat ik het gewoon toegeven: ja, er zaten bolletjes katoen in mijn handbagage toen ik naar Boedapest vertrok. Maar geen haaknaald. Ik weet niet of jullie weleens met haakspullen in je handbagage hebben gereisd, maar ik wist niet zo goed waar ik moest beginnen ermee. Van een vriendin kreeg ik wel een goede tip: tandflos mee om de draadjes aan de snijder mee los te knippen (want ja, een schaar krijg je ook niet mee het vliegtuig in). Aangezien ik het niet leuk zou vinden als mijn haaknaald op Schiphol in beslag genomen zou worden, dacht ik: ik koop wel een naald in Boedapest!

I'll just admit it, I was travelling with yarn in my hand luggage to Budapest. But I left my hook at home. Have you guys ever taken crochet things on the plane in your hand luggage? I had no idea where to start. A friend of mine advised me to take silk tooth floss, so I'd be able to cut yarn with the cutter on the case of the floss. Clever! Though I didn't want to risk having to hand over my crochet hook. So I decided to buy one here in Budapest.

Achter het Kino theater vond ik 1001 Fonal (Fonal betekent garen in het Hongaars), een geweldig leuk winkeltje met superveel internationale tijdschriften en boeken (zelfs romans over breien en haken! Haak-lit zeg maar) en haak- en breigaren vaak met bamboe als basis, superzacht en ontzettend mooie kleuren. Kiezen was dan ook een bevalling. Ik heb wel 5 keer dingen terug gelegd. Uiteindelijk koos ik voor deze bolletjes, omdat ik thuis ook nog multi-gekleurd katoen heb liggen en daar heb ik wel een plannetje mee. Ook wilde ik niet het risico lopen om door mijn Budapest-katoen heen te zijn, halverwege een project. En katoen, daar vind je altijd wel wat bijpassends van.

Behind the Kino I found this lovely little yarn shop, called 1001 Fonal (Fonal means yarn in Hungarian) and it was stocked to the roof with international magazines and books (even novels on knitting and crocheting, Hook-lit s to speak) and lots and lots f glorious yarn, often with a bamboo base. So colorful and soft. It took me a while to decide, I think I must've put yarn back at least 5 times. I choose these balls because it's cotton and easy to find something matching at home. I'd be gutted if I ran out of Budapest-yarn halfway through a project.

En achter mijn hotel vond ik nog een geweldige winkel: Barka Fonal, waar een aantal superaardige dames werken. Ze zitten middenin een verhuizing, vandaar dat veel garen en naalden al naar de andere locatie waren. Maar de selectie was super! Een grote collectie van Drops, maar ook bijzondere garens, glanskatoen, Merino, Alpaca. Heel bijzonder. Hier kocht ik een haaknaals van rozenhout. En tip van de verkoopster voor in het vliegtuig: neem een houten naald (bijvoorbeeld bamboe of rozenhout), maak een flinke knot van je haar en steek de naald in je knot, zodat het 'haak' gedeelte in je haar zit. Misschien niet zo comfortabel op lange vluchten, maar voor zo'n klein eindje van Boedapest naar Amsterdam: prima.

Behind the hotel I found another yarn shop called Barka Fonal that is owned by some very enthusiastic ladies. They're in the middle of a movie, so some of the stock was already at the new location. But the selection was still nice. A large selection of Drops, but also more special yarns like Merino, shiny cotton and Alpaca. I bought a rosewood hook here. And the sales lady gave me some great advice for taking a hook on a plane. Take a wooden hook, like bamboo or rosewood, twist your hair into a big bun. Then stick the hook into your bun, so the 'hooky' side of the hook is in your hair. Clever isn't it? Not so comfy for long flights, but on a short flight from Budapest to Amsterdam, why not!

Enormous giant granny square pillow cases

Hoeveel bollen Drops Paris er in deze twee kussenslopen gegaan zijn? Ik heb geen idee: tientallen, letterlijk. Deze twee granny square kussenslopen haakte ik in opdracht en zijn maar liefst 61x61 centimeter groot. Letterlijk en figuurlijk een enorme klus.

I have no clue how many balls of Drops Paris yarn I actually used to make these pillow cases. I lost count to be honest. But I guess it's a few dozen. Literally. Why? Well, these two granny square pillow covers are big. And when I say big, I'm not lying to you. They are 61x61 cm (24x24 inch) big. So this was definately an enormous job to do.

De ontvanger van deze kussenslopen koos de kleuren uit én de volgorde. Voor mij wel gemakkelijk, want zo kon ik lekker door haken. Dat was ook wel nodig met deze afmetingen, want het heeft wel een paar weken geduurd voordat ze af waren. Vier lappen van 61x61, poeh... ik voel het nog!

The lovely Canadian woman ordering these pillow cases picked the colors and the pattern herself. So all I had to do was crochet. Sounds easy, but it was hard work. It took me a couple of weeks to finished these! I mean 4 giant squares of 24 x 24 inch... I'm still aching.

En laten we eerlijk zijn: zo'n hittegolf haakt toch ook net iets minder lekker weg! Maar het is gelukt, de tientallen draadjes zijn weggewerkt en de vintage knopen zijn eraan genaaid. Dus nu kan het pakket op weg naar Canada (zo leuk!) en kan ik weer gaan freestyle-haken!

And even though I just love to crochet and work on granny squares, the weather wasn't exactly motivating me. I mean, there was quite the heatwave going on in The Netherlands over the last few weeks. So I am really happy to have finished these pillow cases and now this parcel is on its way to Canada (yes, how cool!). After my right wrist starts hurting, I am ready for some freestyle crochet!

WIP Wednesday

Af en toe is het heerlijk om niet na te hoeven denken bij een opdracht: welke kleuren moet ik kiezen, in welke volgorde zal ik ze haken? Dat was allemaal niet nodig, want ik kreeg een opdracht waarbij het al helemaal was uitgedacht. Het enige dat ik moest doen is wol kopen en haken. Normaal gesproken zou ik het jammer vinden dat mijn eigen creativiteit er niet aan te pas komt, maar de kleurkeuze was leuk en het patroon gewaagd. Dus, waarom niet?

Every now and then I love not having to think about a custom order: which colours to pick, which pattern to crochet. This time I got a custom order by someone who had it all figured out: colours and pattern. So all I had to do was get the yarn and crochet. Now normally I would think it's a pitty that I wouldn't be able to put my own creativity into it. But this time I didn't mind as I love the colour combi and I think the pattern is very unorthodox. So yeah, I'm jumping right in!

De kleuren doen mij enorm aan Cath Kidston denken: helemaal niks mis mee dacht ik zo. Het is best een groot project en het zal wel even duren voor het af is. Ik houd jullie op de hoogte. En het garen is natuurlijk Drops Paris, wederom besteld bij Echt Studio. Ik kan eigenlijk net zo goed aandelen nemen in Echtstudio, want ik bestel er genoeg (ze zijn dan ook vreselijk betrouwbaar enzo).

The colours make me think about Cath Kidston, nothing wrong with that I say. It's a rather big project, so it will probably take me a while before it's finished. I'll keep you posted. The yarn I am using is Drops Paris, one of my favorite yarns. I bought it at Echtstudio, a really great Dutch online yarn store. I might as well get some shares in this store, as I am ordering so much there at the moment.

Ondanks dat ik maandag nog een beetje liep te simmen, zo in mijn eentje als freelancer (dat heb ik écht zelden, maar het was gewoon zo'n dag), was ik vandaag weer zo blij met mijn vogelvrije bestaan. Want ik schoof gewoon wat heen en weer met mijn werkzaamheden, zodat ik tussen de middag tijd had om in het zonnetje naar het centrum te fietsen en een zálig broodje te halen bij KEEK, een hele leuke koffie- en broodjeszaak aan de rand van het centrum van Utrecht. Dit is een broodje met eiersalade en pesto en ik heb er uren tsjokvol van gezeten. Lekker!

Even though I was a bit sad all by myself last Monday (I rarely feel that way about freelancing, I guess it was just one of those days), I felt pretty good about being as free as a bird today. I just went a bit creative with all that needed to be done and took an hour long lunch break to cycle to the city centre in the sun and get me a fabulous sandwich. This one is egg salad and pesto and was so good, I was stuffed for hours. Yum.

Genieten jullie ook zo, nu het goede weer eindelijk (!) hier is? Ons balkon is eindelijk helemaal af, vol met bloemen, groenten en kruiden. Laat de bijen en hommels maar komen! En nee, nog geen blote benen (te wit!), maar al wel blote voeten. Zo fijn.

Are you enoying good weather where you are? I am so glad it's finally arrived here. The balcony is finally finished and it's filled with flowers, veggies and herbs. I hope we get lots of bees and bumblebees. And no, no bare legs yet (too pasty!), but I love walking around on bare feet. It's the best.

Dreaming of spring #2

Wat fijn, er zijn weer ranonkels. In deze woeste bos bloemen zaten eerst ook tulpen, maar die hebben inmiddels het loodje gelegd. Geeft niets, want deze wilde ranonkels vind ik geweldig.

Oh, this is lovely. The ranunculus are back in seasons. This bush of flowers also had a bunch of tulips in them, but they've passed on. But that's okay. I like these wild flowers just as they are.

Daarvan krijg ik weer helemaal zin in de lente en in wat lente-achtigs haken. Maar alleen groen- en geeltinten is misschien een beetje saai? Ik heb er wel genoeg, zo ondervond ik al spittend door de voorraad... oeps.

They make me long for spring! And I also want to crochet something spring-y. But just greens and yellows, isn't that a bit boring? I dunno. I do have enough of them, or so I found out whilst digging to my stash, ooooops...

Wat heeft dit nog nodig? Rood en roze? Blauw? Wit? Wat zou eens leuk zijn als nieuws lente-project? Nieuwe lente, nieuwe kansen!

So, what does this need? Red and pink? Blue? White? And what would be a fun new project for spring? New spring, new chances!

Crochet flower coasters

Grote haakprojecten, allemaal goed en wel. Maar het duurt natuurlijk eeuwen voordat het af is. Vorige week begon ik met het haken van onderzetters in de vorm van grote bloemen. En dat werkte wel hele verslavend. Dus haakte ik vrolijk door. Voordeel: ze zijn zo klaar!

Those big crochet projects, oh it's great you know. But it takes a while to finished them. So last week I started crocheting big flower coasters. And that was kind of addictive. So I kept on going. The advantage being: they are done in a sec and a bit!

Toch heerlijk, om zo'n stapeltje onderzetters te zien! Ik haakte ze terwijl ik televisie keek of terwijl ik naast mijn lief zat, die heel lief allerlei software terug installeerde om mijn inmiddels gerepareerde laptop. De engel (mijn mam dan, al staat de Marokkaanse meneer die mijn laptop zo netjes maakte inmiddels ook in de top 10). 

Isn't it nice, looking at a pile of crochet coasters? I crocheted them whilst watching tv or sitting next to my husbear who was reinstalling all this software onto my repared laptop. He's an angel! (My husband I mean, although the nice Morrocan man who repared my computer is defanetly in my top 10 now).

Voor deze onderzetters gebruikte ik mijn favoriet Drops Paris, maar ik heb ook Rico katoen gebruikt. Dat is lekker dik en stevig, helemaal goed voor onderzetters. Want als je wat morst, absorbeert het katoen dat gewoon. Geen kringen = fijn.

For these coasters I used my old time favorite Drops Paris, but also Rico cotton. That's thick and firm, perfect for coasters. 'Cause if you spill your drink, the cotton will absorb it, Nice and clean. So no spoiling your table. Isn't that nice.

Wat kan ik zeggen, ik houd van M.C. Escher. Dat is de nerd in mij. Heerlijke puzzelplaatjes zijn het! Maar zoals je ziet is er op die onderzetter nog ruimte voor een veel grotere mok, of een schaaltje... met M&M's of chips ofzo (oooh, zo'n zin in wat lekker nu...). Vind je de onderzetters ook zo leuk? Er staan er een hele hoop in mijn shop!

What can I say, I love M.C. Escher. It's my inner nerd trying to creep out. The images are lovely puzzles. But, as you see on the pic, there's a lot more space on that coaster. For a large mug, or maybe a bowl... filled with M&M's or crisps, mmm (alright, mow I'm peckish you lot...). Do you like these coasters? There's a whole bunch of them in my shop.

WIP Wednesday

Vanaf het weekend stond de doos met bolletjes Drops Paris al heel gezellig mijn richting uit te knipogen. Dus werd het ook tijd om ermee aan de slag te gaan. Ik heb nog genoeg te haken met dit katoen, dus hoppa! Ik vind beginnen altijd het moeilijkst. Welke kleur eerst en daarna? Ik maak nooit een plan. Dingen gebeuren, zoals ze gebeuren. Maar meestal na een tour of twee zit ik er helemaal in.

Since this weekend the box filled with balls of Drops Paris was staring my way quite happily. So it was about time I started my project. It's quite a large project I am making with this yarn, so lots of hooking ahead of me. Starting a project is the toughest for me. I never make a plan. My projects happen as they happen. But what color first and which one second? But after a few rounds I am all relaxt and know exactly what to do. 

Tot  toe gaat het goed en ben ik heel erg tevreden! Ik heb alleen nog een kleur 'raspberry' waarvan ik niet zo goed weet op welk moment ik er die tussen moet foefelen. Maar zoals altijd: komt tijd, komt raad.

I am pretty pleased with the result so far. I just have this color called 'raspebrry' and I am not quite sure when to start using it. But as ever: I'll know it, when I know it.

Wat is dat toch met granny squares dat het eigenlijk één van de allerfijnste haakpatronen is? Ik vind het altijd zo fijn om lekker naar het patroon te kijken dat zich zo langzaam aan ontvouwt. Vooral de hoeken vind ik zo schattig. Heel fijn.

What is it about the granny square that makes it possibly the best crochet pattern out there? I just love watching how the pattern evolves. I especially love the corners of a granny square, they're so cute. Lovely.

Maar vertel: wat staat er bij jullie op de pennen? Nog bijzondere projecten voor in de kerstvakantie?

Yarn, oh glorious yarn

Er is weinig zo leuk als wolletjes kopen. Maar ja, ik heb er al genoeg. Dus de laatste tijd mocht ik het niet van mezelf, tenzij ik wat nieuws nodig had. En dat was nu het geval, want ik kreeg een ontzettend leuke opdracht binnen. En daar heb ik echt een berg nieuwe kleurtjes Drops Paris voor nodig.

There aren't many things that I like to do better than buy yarn. But lately I didn't allow myself to buy new yarn, as I have enough as it is. But then I got this really cool custom order this week that needed lots of new colors of Drops Paris yarn. 

Dus kreeg ik een enorme doos binnen met de post deze week. Vol met bolletjes! Woohoo! Dit was de bovenste laag.

So this week an enormous box was delivered in the mail. Filled with yarn! Woohoo! This was only the top layer.

En dit de onderste laag. Wat een zaligheid.

And this was the bottom layer. Oh, the yummyness.

En dan is dit dus de berg die je in het totaal hebt. Heel sneu, ik weet het, maar ik word hier dus echt vreselijk blij van. Zulke leuke kleurtjes! Uitgekozen samen met degene van wie ik de opdracht heb gekregen. Het is een erg omvangrijk project, dus ik moet als de sodemieter aan de haak. Een mooi project voor tijdens de kerstdagen en daarna. Dus als jullie tot en met februari niets meer van me horen, dan weten jullie het ;-)

And this is the mountain of glorious yarn that I get to work with. I know I am pathetic, but this makes me so happy. Love these colors. I picked them together with the person who gave me the personal order. It's quite a large and time consuming project. So I really have to sart cracking with my hook. A good project during the holidays and after that. So if you don't hear back from me untill Februari, you know why ;-)
