A day with Ka-Ching

Wat is beter dan één Etsy-verkoper? Tien Etsy-verkopers! Dat is ongeveer de gedachte achter het Ka-Ching collectief, een initiatief van vier Etsy-verkoopsters die vonden dat het allemaal beter kan: de foto's, de looks van de winkels en ja, ook de verkoop. Dat kan ik natuurlijk alleen maar beamen. En alles gaat nu eenmaal net een beetje gemakkelijker als je elkaar kunt ondersteunen en helpen. Maar het is ook gewoon leuk om andere Etsy verkopers wat beter te leren kennen, zeker als je meestal in je uppie werkt.

Ik leerde het Ka-Ching collectief kennen via Annabel, van de winkel SecondHandSandy, toen ik haar interviewde voor ZiZ Magazine en vond het leuk dat het collectief allerlei bijeenkomsten organiseert, zodat de Nederlandse Etsy winkels zo goed en mooi mogelijk worden. Vandaar dat ik gisteren te vinden was op de fotodag van het Ka-Ching collectief, op landgoed Elswout.

What's better than one Etsy seller? Ten Etsy sellers! That's more or less what four Amsterdam based Etsy sellers thought when they formed the Ka-Ching collective. They thought our Dutch Etsy shops could do better: we could take better pics, our shops could look prettier and heck, we could even sell more. And I couldn't agree more. And you know, everything goes a bit easier if you just help each other out. And it's also a lot of fun to get to know other Etsy sellers, especially if you're always working by yourself.

I got to know the Ka-Ching collective through one of the founders, Annabel who owns Etsy shop SecondHandSandy, when I interviewed her for ZiZ Magazine. And I loved the fact that the collective organises a lot of workshops and field days for fellow Etsy sellers. That's why I spent my Saturday this weekend at a huge estate to take a workshop 'product photografy'.

 

De hele dag zijn we druk bezig geweest met fotografie. We kregen goede tips over productfotografie door een fotografe, maar er was nog veel meer. We hielpen elkaar met poseren, want sommige items staan nu eenmaal het beste op een model. En ja, ik heb ook model gestaan. Daarvoor onderging ik bijna een totale metamorfose en moest ik totaal uit mijn comfortzone stappen. Binnenkort verschijnen hier misschien de foto's wel! Maar ook werd er met een opbouwende kritische blik gekeken naar elkaars Etsy shops en werden er druk tips uitgewisseld over hoe het allemaal nog beter kan.

The whole day was pretty much all about pics for Etsy shops, which was very interesting. We got some great advice from a photographer, but there was more. We also modelled for each other, because sometimes your products show best on a model. And yes, I was a model too! I went through this great make-over and had to step a long way from my comfort zone. But it was so much fun. I hope to show you the pics soon. But we also took a look at each others shops and reviewed them, giving feedback.

En fotograferen en model staan, maakt hongerig. We namen allemaal wat lekkers mee. Ik bracht cranberry-rozijnen muffins mee en een vanille cake. Maar er stonden zo veel lekkere dingen op tafel dat het moeilijk kiezen was.

Taking pictures and modeling makes hungry! We all took something yummy for luch. I took cranberry-raison muffins and a vanilla cake. But there were so many yummy things on the table that it was hard to chose.

Het landgoed was helemaal geweldig. Er waren stallen, een hooizolder, hekken, roestige landbouwgereedschappen, landerijen en bossen. Echt heel fijn om daar foto's van je producten te kunnen maken, met mooi licht erbij én tips van een fotografe. En tot mijn genoegen: twee gezellige poezers. Als dát niet gezellig is! The estate was just gorgious. There were stables, a hay attic, beautiful wooden fences, rusty tools, woods and fields. It was such a pleasure to take pictures there of some of my shop items and get advice too from a prof photographer. And, I realise this makes me a very sad person, there were two lovely kitties there! Aww, great  company. I hope to be showing my new pics on here and Etsy soon!

Hebben jullie al wat gekocht in de uitverkoop? Ik ben er altijd heel slecht in om wat leuks te vinden tijdens de uitverkoop, maar dit jaar had ik mazzel. Een mooie linnen broek voor €9. Blissful Sunday: happy sewing

Na een week lang zon, fietsen en buiten eten, zag de lucht vanochtend ineens grijs. Natuurlijk had ik er juist vandaag even op uit willen trekken met mijn lief op de fiets en vanavond wat willen kokkerellen op de BBQ. Maar dat zat er dus even niet in. Op zich niet erg, want zo kwam ik nog eens toe aan wat naaien. Fijn!

After a week of sun, cycling and having dinner outside, this morning the sky was grey. I was a tad dissapointed as I was planning on going out for a bike ride with my sweet and then cook some dinner on the BBQ tonight. But, nope. No way. On the other hand, that did mean I had some time to sew on on hands. Always good.

Deze clutch zagen jullie al voorbij komen, ik maakte er al eerder een paar en ik ben het patroon nog lang niet moe. Omdat ik het zelf heb getekend, heb ik heb hier en daar nog een beetje aangepast, maar eigenlijk ben ik inmiddels behoorlijk tevreden.

You saw this clutch before, 'cause I already made a few of them and I have to say: I am not tired of the pattern just yet. I drew up the pattern myself, which means that over the course of sewing a few of these I have adjusted the pattern slightly. But I have to say: I'm pretty happy as it is now.

Maar het leukste vond ik dit keer de voering, die is felblauw! Het idee werd me aan de hand gedaan door een vriendin. Ik vond het een superplan dat direct uitgevoerd moest worden. En het resultaat: een clutch die zó ontzettend Happy in Red is, dat het mijn handelsmerk zou moeten worden! Het tasje is te koop in mijn Etsy shop.

But the best part really is the lining, bright and blue. I got the idea from a friend of mine and I just had to try it. And the result is a clutch that is so much Happy in Red that it should really be my trade mark! This clutch is for sale in my Etsy shop.

Maar ik naaide vandaag nog meer. Alleen wat dat wordt...

And I was sewing some more today. But...

The queen is retired, long live the king!

En dan word je ineens wakker in een land met een koning. Is dat even wat. Wat een leuke blogs en berichtjes zag ik gisteren van jullie langskomen: op rommelmarkten, festivals, kleedjes en feesten. Ik bracht gisteren achter de computer door, werkend. Met op de achtergrond de televisie aan, omdat ik toch niets van de troonswisseling wilde missen. Ik ben geen ontzettende koningshuisfanaat, maar het was toch zeker wel een bijzondere gebeurtenis. En omdat ik me zo sielug voelde, omdat iedereen aan het feest vieren was behalve ik, togen Lief en ik toch nog even naar de stad aan het einde van de middag. Niets meer te krijgen op de vrijmarkt natuurlijk, maar we troffen vrienden in de stad en daarmee werd het toch weer net iets te gezellig.

When I woke up today, our country no longer had a Queen, but a King. Yesterday our Queen Beatrix retired and her son Willem-Alexander took over. A day of massive celebrations throughout the coutry. Except for me, I was working. With the tv on, so I wouldn't miss the important bits. I am not a huge fan of the monachy. However, a coronation happens every 30-40 years in The Netherlands, so I found it to be a very memorable day. At the end of the afternoon, when I was feeling oh so sorry for myself as I was the only one working, the husbear and me went into town, met some friends and had quite the party... oops.

Daarom deel ik vandaag met jullie, wat ik eigenlijk gisteren had willen delen. Ja, een beetje mosterd naar de maaltijd is het wel. That's why I am sharing today, what I wanted to share yesterday. I know, it's a little late. But such a nice discount opportunity, I think it's still quite valid the day after. Snuggle up! Large granny stripe blanket

Greek granny stripe blanket tadaaa!

In Griekenland begon ik aan deze deken, zoals jullie al konden zien. Ik vond het heerlijk om op het balkonnetje, in de zon, een beetje te haken, naar de bloemen te staren en te luisteren naar de hordes kinderen die er op straat speelden (er was een jochie dat Alexi heette dat nogal populair was bij zijn buurmeisjes!). En later ging ik er in de Nederlandse kou weer mee verder. Minder in vakantiestemming, helaas, maar niet met minder plezier.

I started this crochet blanket in Greece, as you probably read. I just sat there, on my litle balcony in Naxos hooking along whilst watching the flowers, enjoying the sun, listening to the kids playing in the street (there was this kid Alexi that was particularly populair with the girls in the neighbourhood!). And later on, I worked some more on the blanket in the Dutch cold. No more holiday mood left unfortunately, but I loved this project just as much.

En nu is hij af! Ik ben er zo blij mee. Tis echt een dotje geworden met hele vrolijke, fijne kleuren. Bij de kleuren denk ik aan de fruitstalletjes die ik overal zag tijdens mijn vakantie. Appels, citroenen, nectarines, perziken, druiven, watermeloen. Volgens mij zitten ze allemaal in dit dekentje.

And now here it is: tadaah! I really love this blanket and I enjoy these colours a lot. They remind me of all the fruit stalls I saw on holiday. Apples, lemons, limes, grapes, water melon, nectarines, peaches. I think they're all there in this blanket.

Ik heb best een stukkie moeten doorhaken! Want het is een flinke lap geworden. 84 cm breed en een meter lang. Wat groter dan een gemiddelde babydeken, maar een ramp is dat niet dacht ik zo. Baby's groeien namelijk, of zo heb ik toch begrepen, en dan groeien ze niet meteen onder de deken vandaan. Langer plezier ervan dus.

I really had to hook on for a bit,'cause this turned out to be quite a large baby blanket. 84 centimeters wide and a meter long. This is quite larger than the average baby blanket, I know. Though, it shoudn't be a problem I think. I mean, baby grow, or so I've read, and this means that the baby blanket will also last when the baby turns into a little toddler. More fun to be had!

Veel van jullie vragen me vaak dingen als: watvoor materiaal heb je gebruikt, welke kleuren en hoe heb je die gekozen. Nou, over dat laatste kan ik nog weleens een bericht volkladderen! Over het garen dat ik heb gebruikt, kan ik duidelijk zijn: 100% katoen. Wel allemaal verschillende merken, dat was niet helemaal de bedoeling, maar soms gaan die dingen zo. In ieder geval allemaal vergelijkbaar met Catania Cotton. En ik haak op naald 4, bijna altijd trouwens, ik weet ook niet waarom.

Now many of you want to know stuff like: what yarn did you use, what colours and how did you pick those. Well, about the latter I can write a whole post, and maybe I will sometime, but about the first thing I can be clear: I used 100% cotton. I used different brands. Normally I don't, but it just happened that way this time. Anyway, the yarn is compatible with Catania Cotton. And I use crochet hook 4 mm. I mostly do really. No idea why.

Tote bag in fuchsia with leather straps

Al eerder maakte ik een lichtblauw en een donkerblauw exemplaar. Maar ik was het gebruik van die lederen hengsels nog helemaal niet beu. Onlangs tikte ik een leuk fuchsia roze stofje op de kop en meteen wist ik dat dat een combi zou worden met die lederen hengsels.

I made light blue and a dark blue versions of this bag. But I haven't grown tired yet of using these great leather shoulder straps for bags. Recently I came across this lovely fuchsia pink fabric and I just knew that it would be a great combo with the leather straps.

En zeg nou eerlijk: het is toch ook een hele goede combi! Wat vooral heel fijn is, is dat de stof echt supersterk is. Daar moest nog een extra stoere machinenaald aan de pas komen, anders had ik het nooit tot een goed einde gebracht. Maar het is wel gelukt. De tas is zo stevig dat je hem zo kunt neerzetten, zonder dat hij omvalt.Daar houd ik van.

And lets be honest here: it is a very good combo isn't it. What I really love about this bag is that it's so incredibly strong! I really had to use a tough needle in my sewing machine to bring it all to a good end. But here we are. This bag is so firm and strong that you can just put it on the floor or on the table and t won't fall over. Now, I like that.

Ik maakte de hengsels weer vast met een contrasterende kleur. Geinig effect geeft dat. En zoals jullie misschien wel raadden, is deze tas ook gemaakt voor in mijn Etsy shop. De laatste paar weken ben ik superdruk met het naaien van bestellingen van mensen en probeer ik ook dingen te maken om met Etsy winkel lekker mee te vullen. Ik probeer jullie er niet constant mee lastig te vallen, maar met deze tas was ik echt wel even blij.

I attached the leather straps with constrasting thread. I really like that effect. And as you probably guessed, I made this bag for my Etsy shop. The last couple of weeks I have been so busy with sewing bags that people ordered and sewing things to put in my Etsy shop and fill it up quite nicely. I try not to bother you with it all the time, but sometimes I am just so pleased with the end result. Like with this bag.

Champagne for everyone!

'Van je successen leer je het meest, als je ze maar viert', hoorde ik pas van een wijze dame. En weet je wat: ze heeft gelijk. Vandaag kreeg ik namelijk onderstaand bericht...

'You learn the most of your successes if you celebrate them properly', I was taught by a wise lady recently. And you know what, she's right. Today I recieved this in my Inbox...

Mijn eerste sale in mijn Etsy winkeltje! Dat had ik niet verwacht! Ik opende hem drie weken geleden en heb er nog niet veel in staan. Dus was hard bezig met geduldig zijn (al moeilijk genoeg) en dan toch al zo snel een tas verkocht. De Happy Bird Bag. Die is dan ook wel erg leuk, al zeg ik het zelf ;-)

My first sale on Etsy! I did not expect that at all. My shop is still quite small and I just opened 3 weeks ago. So I was trying hard not to worry (which was hard enough) and now I've sold the Happy Bird Bag. Ah, I love that tote.

Kijk, dat staat er toch maar mooi. Ik stuiter echt een beetje, haha. Heel idioot, maar ach.

Now look at that, one sale. Isn't it fab! I am bouncing off the wall! I'm so crazy, but hey!

 

En dat vieren, dat doen we gewoon even zo dus!! Champagne voor iedereen :-)

About a big date and a big step

En dan ben je dus ineens jarig. Vandaag. Een leeftijd bereikt waar ik het dus liever niet over heb. De grote drie-nul. Zo, daar heb ik het gezegd. En verder wil ik het er niet over hebben!

So, all of a sudden it was my bday. Today. I reached an age that I’d rather not talk about. The big three-zero. There. I’ve said it. Let’s not mention it again. 

Nu ben ik wel van de dol dwaze acties. Van die acties waarvan mijn moeder zou zeggen: ‘Jij ook altijd met je streken’. Nou mam, ga er maar eens even voor zitten. Want ik heb het gedaan… ik heb het écht gedaan. 

Ik heb mijn eigen Etsy shop geopend.

Now, I am all in for crazy decisions. Decisions that would make my mum shake her head and say: ‘Oh seriously, this is so crazy you. Again.’ Well mum, buckle up and you’d better sit down for this. ‘Cause I did it, I really did. 

I opened my very own Etsy shop today. 

Ik wilde dit al heel lang, kreeg eigenlijk steeds vaker verzoeken om een tas te maken voor die-of-gene. En ik heb er vooral zo veel lol in. Dus waarom niet! En de datum om te starten. Ach, het leek me wel een mooie actie!

I have wanted this for a long time now. And lately, more and more people have put in their request for a custom made bag from me. And seriously, I just love making things for people! And the date to start my shop, wel… I guess I just had to dó something. So better make it a good one, right? 

In mijn shop vind je, hoe kan het ook anders, tassen! Vrolijke kleuren, praktische modellen. Ik heb nog zo veel ideeën in mijn hoofd, dus de shop wordt aangevuld hoor! Binnenkort plaats ik er ook wat haakwerk in. Alles op zijn tijd!
