Let's do something for the Philippines

Durven jullie ook bijna niet meer naar het nieuws te kijken? Telkens als ik naar het journaal kijk, zijn er weer meer doden bijgekomen op de Filipijnen na de orkaan Hayan. Ik krijg het idee dat er letterlijk geen huis meer overeind staat op de eilanden. Vanwege mijn achtergrond als journalist weet ik dat ze er bij het journaal de allerergste beelden uit filteren. Kun je nagaan hoe het er op dit moment echt uit ziet, hoeveel mensen geen huis meer hebben en wat een chaos het er moet zijn.

Are you as horrified as I am watching the news these days? 'Cause everytime I am watching the news broadcasts I see more and more people have died on The Philippines after hurricane Hayan. I get the impression that there's no house left standing on the islands. Since I am a journalist I know that at the news stations they filter out the really horrible things before broadcasting, so this gives you an idea of how horrific things really are on The Philippines. How many people have lost their houses and the chaos that is ruling there.

Even wat gruwelijke cijfers:

• Het dodental staat op dit moment op 4460 mensen.
• Bijna 1 miljoen mensen hebben geen huis meer.
• Het kost meer dan 200 miljoen dollar om het land weer enigszins te herbouwen.

Hongersnood en allerlei nare ziektes en epidemieën  liggen op de loer en er is te kort aan alles: voedsel, medicijnen, dekens, tenten. Dus kom op mensen, tijd voor actie!

Some horrible facts:

• At the moment 4460 have lost their lives after the hurricane.
• Almost a million people are homeless.
• It will take 200 million US dollars to get The Philippines back on their feet.

At this moment there is a famine scare and all kinds of nasty diseases and epidemics are lurking. There's a shortage of everything: food, blankets, tents, medicine. So please people, lets take some action!

Wij kunnen, als fantastische crafty community, toch wel wat doen? Granny squares haken voor dekens? Kleren doneren? Ik ben op zoek naar hele goede ideeën om wat te kunnen doen voor het goede doel. Hebben jullie nog goede ideeën of tips? Laat het weten!

Ik heb in ieder geval besloten om de opbrengsten van deze gehaakte granny stripe deken helemaal over te maken op Giro 555. Even wat schaamteloze reclame: deze deken is 1.00 x 1.15 meter groot, gemaakt van superzacht acryl (dus hyperallergeen én uitwasbaar!) en gewoon ontzettend lekker warm. Je leest alles over deze deken én het goede doel in mijn shop.

There must be something that we, as a fabulous crafty community, can do for the Philippines? Can't we crocht granny squares to make blankes of? Or dontate clothes? If you have some ideas on this, please let me know.

Anyway, I've decided to donate all the profits of this granny stripe blanket to the Red Cross. Some shameless promoion: this blanket is 39 inch x 45 inch in size, so nice and large. It's made from 100% acrylic yarn, which means it's anti-allergic and washable! But most of all, it's juct so incredibly soft and warm. You read all about this blanket and the good cause it's going to in my shop.

WIP Wednesday

Op dit moment heb ik vreselijk veel aan mijn hoofd, het zijn onzekere en soms niet al te leuke tijden. Dat maakt me onrustig, onzeker en soms zelfs een beetje boos. Ik heb er een bloedhekel aan om me zo te voelen. Concentreren zit er zeker niet in. Dus dan duik ik in een boek (alles van Arthur Japin is aan te raden). Deze week las ik Birdsong uit van Sebastian Faulks, om te janken zo mooi. En om te ontspannen nam ik ook de haaknaald vast, heel therapeutisch.

At the moment I have lots going on in my life. These are insecure times for me, not much fun sometimes. It makes me feel restless, insecure and even a little angry sometimes. I hate feeling like this, especially since I can't seem to focus on anything. Reading does help (I love books by Dutchman Arthur Japin). This week I've read Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks. So beautiful it made me cry. And after I finished it, I started to crochet. Very terapeutic.

In één avond haakte ik er 12 van deze Japanse sneeuwvlokken uit. Van bamboe-katoen. Superzacht. Mooi zijn ze hè. Samen maken ze een kerstslinger, te koop in mijn shop.

In one night I crocheted 12 of these Japanese snowflakes. They're made of bamboo-cotton. So soft. They're gorgious aren't they? Together they make one wintery Christmas garland. And it's for sale in my shop.

Met mijn winterse granny schiet het ook al op. Ik was echt heel bang dat het een treurige deken zou worden vanwege dat donkergrijs, maar dankzij het geel, groen, paars, blauw en wit erdoor valt dat reuze mee. En het grannystreep patroon is echt zalig, dat haakt lekker door.

And my winter granny stripe blanket is growing fast as well. I was afraid that it would be a gloomy blanket, because of the grey. But thanks to the blue, purple, green and mustard it isn't. And I really have to say that the granny stripe pattern is fabulous. It's one fats crochet project!

En ik vond nog een paar hele mooie kleurtjes voor een kerstproject, dus daar ben ik ook maar mee begonnen! Ik haak nog even therapeutisch door.

And I found some nice colours for a Christmas project, so I started that as well. Better keep hooking therapeutically.

WIP Wednesday

Altijd spannend, zo'n nieuw project. Bij elk nieuw project dat ik begin, zit ik altijd vreselijk te dubben. Smoor ik het in de kiem en begin ik wat nieuws of ga ik ermee door. Voor het nieuwe haakproject waren de kleuren gekozen. Het moest vooral lekker winters en warm worden. Qua kleuren is dat denk ik wel gelukt. Dat donkergrijs had me nog even aan het twijfelen. Maar ik denk toch dat het wel leuk wordt.

When I start a new project, I'm always a little insecure. I always think: should I continue this project, or get out while I still can? In this case I already picked the colours for my new crochet project. They should be nice, wintery and warm. And I guess they are. The grey had me in doubts, but I actually think the endresult will be quite stylish. 

En dan heb ik ook nog wat leuke naaiklussen voor de boeg. Ik kijk er erg naar uit om ze te beginnen! Ik zou alleen zo graag hebben dat ze zichzelf knipten en streken. Flauw hè, dat het niet allemaal kant-en-klaar komt!

And I also have some great sewing chores to do. I am looking forward to those! I just wish it would all cut and irom themselves. Wouldn't that be nice! It would really make my life a lot easier. But I'll get to it.

Greek granny stripe blanket tadaaa!

In Griekenland begon ik aan deze deken, zoals jullie al konden zien. Ik vond het heerlijk om op het balkonnetje, in de zon, een beetje te haken, naar de bloemen te staren en te luisteren naar de hordes kinderen die er op straat speelden (er was een jochie dat Alexi heette dat nogal populair was bij zijn buurmeisjes!). En later ging ik er in de Nederlandse kou weer mee verder. Minder in vakantiestemming, helaas, maar niet met minder plezier.

I started this crochet blanket in Greece, as you probably read. I just sat there, on my litle balcony in Naxos hooking along whilst watching the flowers, enjoying the sun, listening to the kids playing in the street (there was this kid Alexi that was particularly populair with the girls in the neighbourhood!). And later on, I worked some more on the blanket in the Dutch cold. No more holiday mood left unfortunately, but I loved this project just as much.

En nu is hij af! Ik ben er zo blij mee. Tis echt een dotje geworden met hele vrolijke, fijne kleuren. Bij de kleuren denk ik aan de fruitstalletjes die ik overal zag tijdens mijn vakantie. Appels, citroenen, nectarines, perziken, druiven, watermeloen. Volgens mij zitten ze allemaal in dit dekentje.

And now here it is: tadaah! I really love this blanket and I enjoy these colours a lot. They remind me of all the fruit stalls I saw on holiday. Apples, lemons, limes, grapes, water melon, nectarines, peaches. I think they're all there in this blanket.

Ik heb best een stukkie moeten doorhaken! Want het is een flinke lap geworden. 84 cm breed en een meter lang. Wat groter dan een gemiddelde babydeken, maar een ramp is dat niet dacht ik zo. Baby's groeien namelijk, of zo heb ik toch begrepen, en dan groeien ze niet meteen onder de deken vandaan. Langer plezier ervan dus.

I really had to hook on for a bit,'cause this turned out to be quite a large baby blanket. 84 centimeters wide and a meter long. This is quite larger than the average baby blanket, I know. Though, it shoudn't be a problem I think. I mean, baby grow, or so I've read, and this means that the baby blanket will also last when the baby turns into a little toddler. More fun to be had!

Veel van jullie vragen me vaak dingen als: watvoor materiaal heb je gebruikt, welke kleuren en hoe heb je die gekozen. Nou, over dat laatste kan ik nog weleens een bericht volkladderen! Over het garen dat ik heb gebruikt, kan ik duidelijk zijn: 100% katoen. Wel allemaal verschillende merken, dat was niet helemaal de bedoeling, maar soms gaan die dingen zo. In ieder geval allemaal vergelijkbaar met Catania Cotton. En ik haak op naald 4, bijna altijd trouwens, ik weet ook niet waarom.

Now many of you want to know stuff like: what yarn did you use, what colours and how did you pick those. Well, about the latter I can write a whole post, and maybe I will sometime, but about the first thing I can be clear: I used 100% cotton. I used different brands. Normally I don't, but it just happened that way this time. Anyway, the yarn is compatible with Catania Cotton. And I use crochet hook 4 mm. I mostly do really. No idea why.

Granny stripe edging: a tutorial

Een granny square deken uit is leuk! En ik kwam erachter dat een granny streep deken haken minstens zo leuk is. Een ding is echter best lastig: de rand langs de granny stripe deken. Want langs de 'lange kant' heb je niet de ruimte tussen de 'granny clusters', zoals bij een granny square deken. Ik heb best even zitten prutsen, maar het is gelukt!

Crocheting a granny square blanket is fun! And I found out that crocheting a granny stripe blanket is also fantastic! Though one thing is tough: making the edge along the granny stripe blanket. 'Cause along the 'long' side of the blanket you don't have thos handy speaces between 'grann clusters' like you have with granny square blankets. It took me a little while to get it right, but I got there!

En omdat ik daar zo opgelucht over was, heb ik het maar meteen even vastgelegd voor het nageslacht. Dus doe je voordeel met deze tutorial.

And because I was so relieved to have finally gotten it right, I just made a tutorial out of it. So crochet along if you are just about to finish your granny stripe blanket.

Even voor de duidelijkheid: dit patroon is niet per se 'van mij'. Ik varieer gewoon wat met bestaande steken en wil jullie graag laten meedelen in hoe ik het heb aangepakt. In een easy peasy 5-stappenplan!

Just to be clear: I am not claiming this pattern as my own. It's just my own variety on existing stitches and I just thought you'd like to see how I did this. Just follow my easy peasy 5 step plan.

Stap 1 - Step 1
Maak een granny stripe deken (of eerst een proeflapje om te oefenen) volgens de aanwijzingen van Lucy of Karin.

Make a granny stripe blanket (or a small tester to try out the pattern) according to Lucy's or Karins tutorial.

Stap 2 - Step 2

Hecht een nieuwe kleur aan in een opening tussen 2 granny clusters. Haak 3 lossen (telt als een stokje), haak nog 2 stokjes in dezelfde ruimte. *Haak een losse en dan 3 stokjes in de volgende opening*. Herhaal ** tot de hoek. In de hoek maak je 3 stokjes 1 losse en 3 stokjes.

Nu ben je aan de 'lange kant' van de deken beland. Je ziet dat er 'ruimte' is tussen de rijen met granny clusters. In die ruimte plaats je je groepjes van 3 stokjes. Tussen elk groepje haak je een losse.

Start with a new colour in a space between 2 granny clusters. Chain 3 (counts as one double crochet), crochet 2 more dc's in the same space. *Chain 1 and crochet 3 dc's in the next space*. Repeat this till you get to the corner. Into the corner you crochet 3 dc's 1 ch 3 dc's. 

Now you're at the difficult 'long side' of the blanket. If you look well you see a 'space' between the seperate rows of granny clusters. In this space you crochet your 3 dc clusters. Between clusters you chain 1.

Stap 3 - Step 3
Hecht een nieuwe kleur aan en haak een losse (telt als 1 vaste). Haak 3 losse en plaats een vaste tussen de granny clusters van de vorige ronde. In de hoek plaats je 1 vaste 3 losse en 1 vaste.

Start a new colour and chain 1 (counts as 1 sc). Chain 3 and place a sc between the spaces of the granny clusters of the last round. In the corner you crochet 1 sc ch 3 1 sc.

Stap 4 - Step 4
Hecht een nieuwe kleur aan in een 3 lossen-lus van de vorige ronde. Haak 3 losse (telt als 1 stokje) en plaats 2 stokjes in dezelfde lus. Haak 3 stokjes in de volgende lus. Let op! Tussen de 3 st clusters haak je geen losse! In de hoeken haak je 3 stokjes 1 losse 3 stokjes.

Start a new colour in a 3 ch loop of the last round. Chain 3 (counts as 1 dc) and put 2 dc's in the same space. Crochet 3 dc's in the next loop. Beware! Don't put ch 1 between the 3 dc clusters! In the corners you crochet 3 dc's 1 ch 3 dc's.

Niet zo moeilijk, toch? Nou, je bent er bijna!
Easy does it, right? Well, you're almost there.

Stap 5 - Step 5

Hecht een nieuwe kleur aan en haak een vaste in elke steek van de vorige tour. In de hoeken haak je 3 vasten.

Start a new colour and place a sc in every stitch of the last round. In the corners you crochet 3 sc's.

Zo krijgt elke mooie granny streep deken het mooie randje dat het verdient.

And that's how you can give a pretty granny stripe blanket the edging it deserves.

Fabulous granny stripe blanket ta-daaa!

Granny squares zijn helemaal super, daar waren we het al over eens toch? Maar het was toch tijd voor wat variatie. De granny stripe. Min of meer uitgevonden door Lucy van Attic 24, maar ik vond de werkbeschrijving van Karin handiger.

Granny squares are just great, I think we all agree on that. But it was time for a bit of variety in my crochet. So I tried the granny stripe. More or less invented by Lucy from Attic 24, though I found the Dutch tutorial by Karin a bit more useful for me.

 

En dit is het resultaat, ik ben er zó trots op! Hij is écht heel erg leuk geworden, al zeg ik het zelf.

And this is the result, I am SO incredibly proud. It really turned out lovely, if I may say so myself.

 

Als je het patroon eenmaal te pakken hebt, ga je als een trein. Het haakt echt lekker weg. De deken is 90 bij 120 centimeter geworden.

Once you get the hang of the pattern it's just a matter of go go go and you're done really fast. This blanket is 90 cm by 120 cm.

Ik heb gekozen voor lichtblauwe, grijze en aqua tinten als hoofdkleuren. Dat deed me wel een beetje aan de zee denken. En natuurlijk stoere strepen ertussendoor, het geeft zo een erg leuk effect moet ik zeggen. Ook met de rand ben ik superblij.

I chose light blue, gray and aqua for the main colours, which really reminded me of the sea. And of course I needed to add some bold reds and pinks. This stripy pattern really turned out well, I have to say. I am also very pleased about the edging.

Twee weken geleden begon ik aan deze deken en nu is hij klaar. Best wel snel toch? Ik geef bij deze de schuld aan het gebrek aan goede televisie! ;-)

Two weeks ago I started this blanket and now it is finished. Kinda fast, right? What can I say, I blame the lack of good tv shows. ;-)

En samen met mijn tulpen en rozen werd ik er helemaal blij van. Ik ben echt helemaal wég van mijn granny stripe deken!

And together with my tulips and roses this really made me sooo happy. I am really smitten with my granny stripe blanket!

Een dagje vrij

Een dagje vrij, wat heerlijk. Ik ruilde mijn 'gewone' vrije dag (op vrijdag) en dan ben je ineens op een vreemde dag vrij. Ook weleens leuk. Tsja, wat doe je dan?

I had the day off, I switched it for my regular day off (on Fridays) and I found myself with a day off on an unexpeted day. So, what do I do?

Ik geef me natuurlijk gewoon over aan het haken, zie mij daar relaxt zitten te wezen! Een grannystripe dekentje dit keer. Dit is echt een volle actiefoto hè! Allemaal blauw-grijs-groentinten. Maar ik zou mijn blog nooit Happy in Red hebben gedoopt als er niet een stoer streepie tussendoor moest. Leuk patroon zo, vind ik. Word vervolgd...

Of course I totally got lost in my new crochet project: a granny stripe blanket this time. With lovely glorious grey, blue and green colours. But of course the name of my blog wouldn't do if I didn't add some bold stripes in between. I love how the pattern is working out. To be continued...

Ik geef me zonder moeite over aan mijn wolverslaving. Wat ook echt niet anders kon. Ik bedoel, ze hadden bij de Wibra en Zeeman echt hele leuke kleurtjes liggen en toen kreeg ik meteen ideeën voor nog een baby dekentje. En zo duur waren ze nou ook weer niet. Zo, heb ik het weer mooi goed gekletst!

And I effordlessly gave into my yarn addiction. I had no choice, seriously. When I saw these great colours at my local shop (for less then €1! a ball) I instantly had an idea for another blanket. It was stronger than myself, honestly. And for that price, ha! See how easily I justified it?

En als je dacht dat ik toen van de bank af kwam, heb je het mis. Want ik schakelde moeiteloos over naar het lezen van de nieuwe Flow. Die lag binnen handbereik natuurlijk. Die schatten van Flow schreven zo maar een artikel over mijn favoriete schrijfster: Annie M.G. Schmidt. Ik wil stiekem eigenlijk wel Annie M.G. Schmidt worden als ik later groot ben, altijd al gewild, dat wisten jullie niet hè?

And if you seriously thought that I would move from the couch, you're mistaken! 'Cause the new issue of Flow magazine was laying within reach, so I just had to go and read that. Those darlings at Flow had written a feature about one of my favorite writers of all times: Annie M.G. Schmidt. You know, when I grow up I want to be just like her, I always had that dream. Didn't know that about me, did ya!

Er stonden ook zalige recepten in de Flow. Eens kijken of ik voor één van deze recepten ben te porren dit weekend (tenzij 'De Tocht' doorgaat)...

There were some great recipes too in the magazine. Mouth watering, really. Maybe I'll make one this weekend, unless ice skating will take my mind off it...

En dan ook nog zo'n zalig stuk over chocolade. Lekker. Hebben we alleen niet in huis. Hm. Het ziet er naar uit dat ik toch nog van de bank af zal moeten komen vandaag!

And a great feature about chocolate. Mmm, chocolate. Yum. We don't have any in the house. Hm, seems like I'll be getting off the couch today afterall!
