Blissful Sunday

Eindelijk, weer eens een weekend thuis. Helemaal geen afspraken, niets moeten, niet op de klok kijken. En dus spendeerde ik het weekend aan het uitmesten van de boekenkast (alle boeken staan nu op kleur, hoe 101 Woonideeën van mij hè.... ik ben een baard verwijderd van het hipster-zijn), schoonmaken van het huis (als het niet zo nodig was geweest had ik het niet gedaan) en genieten van de lente die er nu echt wel aan komt.

Finally, a weekend spent at home. No appointments, no must-do's, no looking at the clock. So I spent my weekend rearranging our book case (all books are now color coordinated... I know, I am one beard away from being a hipster), cleaning the house (trust me, if it wasn't called for I wouldn't have done it) and enjoying spring. It's finallt coming, I'm sure.

Ik bakte een koffiecake, met Griekse yoghurt, bruine suiker en nootjes. Hij kwam niet zo mooi uit de vorm als dat ik had gehoopt. Dus sneed ik hem in kleine stukjes. Want, zo verzekert mijn lief mij altijd, het kan toch niet in één stuk naar binnen.

I baked a coffee cake, with Greek yoghurt, brown sugar and nuts. It didn't come out of the mould as pretty as I hoped, but it tastes really well. So I cut it up in small blocks. Because, as my husbear keeps pointing out, it can't go down whole anyway.

Afgelopen week had ik vreselijk weinig tijd, écht heel weinig tijd zelfs. Maar toen het internet bij één van mijn opdrachtgevers het liet weten, besloot ik niet te wachten tot het het eindelijk weer eens zou gaan doen, maar gewoon even op de fiets te springen. Met mijn neus in de zon en de wind in het haar naar mijn favoriete kringloopwinkel. De laatste maanden ving ik telkens bot. Maar nu was het weer eens raak. Wat een vintage schoonheden zeg!

The last couple of weeks I didn't have a lot of time, no time at all really. But last week, when internet went down at one of my clients, I decided not to wait until it would go back up, but I decided to jump on my bike. With the sun of my face and the wind in my hair I cycled to my favorite thrift shop. The last few months I didn't find anything special, but now I hit the jackpot again. Aren't these gorgious!

En als grote verrassing konden we dit weekend al sla uit eigen tuin eten! Dankzij het warme weer schoot de, deze winter geplante veldsla, enorm omhoog. Een paar bosjes waren al genoeg voor een flinke maaltijdsalade. Genieten.

And to my surprise we were able to eat letuce from our own balcony this weekend. Thanks to the warm weather the last few weeks, the lettuce was growing like mad! A few stalks were already enough for a big salad. Yum.

Eating from my veggie garden (and some sponsor lovin')

Toen ik in maart bedacht dat het leuk zou zijn om wat groentes op het balkon te gaan verbouwen, had ik niet bedacht dat het zo'n succes zou worden. Ik zette de plantjes in april in de bakken en heb sindsdien al twee keer spinazie uit eigen tuin gegeten, twee keer snijbiet en het einde is nog niet in zicht. Op dit moment staan er nog bieten, slakroppen, paksoi en andijvie te wachten. 

In March I thought it would be fun to grow some veggies on my balcony. What I didn't know that it would be such a success. I planted the veggies in April and have eaten spinach twice from my veggie garden since, but also the chard was a huge success. And I'm not done yet. There are beetroots, bok choy, endive and lettuce waiting for me. 

En afgelopen week oogstte ik ook radijsjes van het balkon. Oké, het waren er maar vijf (ik had er acht geplant onder het mom: we zien wel), maar wie het kleine niet eert etc. Nu had ik ergens gelezen (ik denk bij één van jullie op een blog) dat je van radijzen alles kunt eten, ook het loof. Allemaal leuk en aardig, maar wat doe je dan met dat loof? Rauw op knagen is ook zo wat, maar gelukkig bood Pinterest uitkomst: pesto!

Last week I harvested some radish. Okay, 5 radishes (I planted 8 'cause I wasn't sure it would work), so I think that's not a bad score then. Now, I read somewhere that you can eat everything from radishes, also the greens. Okay, that's great! But what to do with those greens? Raw they don't look exactly tasty. Luckily, my friend Pinterest came to the rescue: radish greens pesto!

En zoals je ziet, dat gaat dus helemaal goed! Ik voegde ook nog wat basilicum en bieslook toe (ook van het balkon natuurlijk!) en de pesto is echt ontzettend mild. Vanavond ga ik er pesto ham broodjes mee bakken en van het weekend ga ik het in de focaccia gebruiken denk ik. Waar gebruiken jullie pesto voor?

And as you can see, it went quite well! I also added some basil and chives (also from my own balcony of course!) and the pesto has quite a mild taste, I like it. So tonight I am baking pesto and ham rolls and this weekend I think I'll use it in some focaccia I think. So, what do you use pesto for?

Maar dat tuinieren, dat doet wat. Ik heb toch heel wat uren op internet gespeurd naar allerlei handige tips en truuks, want het was vallen en opstaan. Zo werden mijn kruiden aangevallen door luis. Dat wilde ik per se op een biologisch verantwoorde manier bestrijden (want wat heeft het voor zin om biologische groentes en kruiden te kweken als je er vervolgens chemische meuk op gooit?) en dat is ook gelukt! Ik liet twee uien en een paar knoflooktenen een nachtje in water weken, goot dat nat vervolgens in een plantenspuit en bewerkte daar mijn kruiden mee. Succes! Maar die plantenspuit kon ik weggooien, die lucht van uien en knoflook gaat er nooit mee uit (en laten we eerlijk zijn, niet de fijnste geur ter wereld...).

But gardening, it's quite a thing right? I mean I spent hours on the internet looking for tips and advice, 'cause it wasn't all smooth sailing. My garden herbs were attacked by greenfly. I really wanted to solve that in an organic way ('cause what's the point of planting and growing organic herbs and veggies only to pour chemic stuff on it later on?) and that worked! I soaked two onions and some cloves of garlic in water overnight, poured that water into a plant spray and sprayed that water onto the herbs. No greenfly survived. Success! But the plant spray, well... I could toss that out. The smell of onions and garlic is never coming out of there (and let be honest, not the best smell in the world).

WIP Wednesday: my veggie patch

De regen van de afgelopen weken was op zich natuurlijk welkom. Behalve dan dat het er ook nog eens héél koud bij was. Niet zo heel zo goed voor de groentjes eigenlijk. Gelukkig houden de spinazie en snijbiet het lekker vol. Die vinden regen en wind niet zo erg.

The rain we had over the last few weeks was very welcome. What wasn't a good thing, is that it was freaking cold. Not so good for my veggies! Luckily the spinach and chard didn't seem to mind too much. They seem to like rain and wind.

Het lijkt er zo maar op dat ik de plantjes binnenkort even uit zal moeten graven en wat verder uit elkaar moet zetten, zodat ze lekker de ruimte hebben. En deze week heeft de zon erop gestaan en de blaadjes van de snijbiet kregen meteen een kleurtje. Dat gaat de goede kant op.

It looks like I am going to be digging out these chard plants soon to give them a bit more space. They seem to need it. And this week they caught some sun too and the leaves of the chard starting to colour immediately. So I would say, it's going well.

Ook de spinazie ziet er goed uit, al lijkt die wel meer aanmoediging nodig te hebben. Misschien maar even bij mesten deze week en wat meer ruimte geven.

The spinach is also looking good, though it needs some mote encouragement. Maybe I need to give it some extra mulch this week and give it some more space.

Maar mijn arme courgettes, die hebben echt geleden onder al die kou en regen! Achteraf denk ik dat ik ze misschien had moeten afdekken. Want courgettes vinden water op hun bladeren niet leuk en die kou (nachtvorst!) zal ook niet bevorderlijk zijn geweest. Iemand een idee hoe ik ze weer een beetje blij krijg?

But my poor zucchinis, of how they suffered from the rain and the cold over the last few weeks. Looking back I think I should've covered them up a little to protect them. 'Cause zucchinis don't like water on their leaves and the cold (it was even freezing at night) also didn't help. Any idea how to get them all happy again?

One sunny day

Op een dag als vandaag is het helemaal niet erg om op de fiets te stappen en mijn 'vrijdag rondje' te maken. Heerlijk in het zonnetje.

On a day like today it's no punishment to go out and cycling my 'Friday Round' at all. The sun was out and it was amazing.

Het was nog heerlijk stil aan de Maarsseveenseplassen, nog geen dagjesmensen te zien en geen rimpeltje op het water.

Normally it can be quite busy at the little lakes near our house. But now it was so nice and quiet. No ripples on the water yet.

Mijn buitenlandse vrienden schrikken zich altijd helemaal wild als ik vertel dat ik tijdens het fietsen gewoon foto's zit te maken. Ja, je komt uit Nederland of niet!

My foreign friends are always totally freaked out when I tell them I take pics during cycling. Pah, I am Dutch you know!

Op de terugweg fietste ik even langs de boer voor groente en fruit. Dit is de vangst van vandaag. Zie je die enorme courgettes? Misschien moet ik die even ter voorbeeld tonen aan mijn eigen courgetteplanten? Luie donders! In ieder geval: ik zie courgettesoep in mijn toekomst!

On the way back I stopped at 'my' farmer to buy veggies. This is the catch of the day! See those zucchinis? Maybe I should show these babies to my own zucchini plants? Lazy buggers they are! Anyhoos, I see zucchini soup in my future!

 

En in de berm spotte ik nog bramen! De meeste waren al geplukt of nog niet rijp. Dus dit is de schamele vangst. Maar wie het kleine niet eert etc..

Along the way I also notices blackberries growing, so I pulled over and picked some. Not a lot, but still. You gotta appreciate the small stuff in life. Right?

Dit belooft in ieder geval een zalig, zonnig weekend te worden! Wat zijn jullie (zonnige) plannen?

Blissful colourful Sunday

Creatief bezig zijn kent vele kanten. Gisteren heb ik met twee blogsters om de tafel gezeten en kreeg een héél goed idee, ineens nóg meer vaste bodem. Toen ik thuis kwam zei mijn man: 'Ik heb je lang niet meer zo enthousiast gezien'. En dat zegt wat (want zo'n chagrijn ben ik nou ook weer niet). Meer over dit project hoor je later deze week.

Creativity has a lot of faces, you all know that. Yesterday I spent the morning with two fellow bloggers and we found out that a creative project we're thinking about, is going to actually work! It's big, huge. And I am so excited. When I came home, the husbear said to me 'It's been a long time since I saw you bouncing off the wall like that'. And that says something ('cause really, I am not a grumpy person). More about this project later this week.

Maar gelukkig was er ook genoeg tijd voor andere creativiteit. Dit rolde zo maar onder mijn naaimachine vandaag. Simpel, maar oh zo vrolijk. Die stof van Anna Maria Horner is gewoon te gek!

But there was also time for different types of creativity. This came rolling from under my sewing machine. So chuffed! It's simple, but great I think. I am just in lust with this Anna Maria Horner fabric.

Deze mooie stof sprak mezelf zo aan, dat ik in mijn enorme garen-collectie dook en allemaal matchende kleurtjes vond, voor een nieuw haakproject. Die bolletjes zijn echt om op te vreten.

The fabric of the bag really spoke to me, so I took a dive in my yarn collection and found all the colours I needed. To start a new crochet project. Just look at all those yummy balls of yarn!

Mijn zondag begon vanochtend trouwens meteen goed toen ik langs mijn broeibak liep en zag dat mijn groentjes en kruidjes zo maar ineens hun koppies lieten zien. Vooral de courgettes (helemaal links) zijn verwoed bezig om mij een zomer vol courgettesoep met zalm te bezorgen.

My Sunday started out really well, 'cause when I walked past my indoor-greenhouse this morning I saw that my veggies and herbs were growing like mad! Especially the zucchinis (on the left) are really going for it! I see a summer filled with zucchini-salmon soup!
