Deze week:

- Maakte ik flink voort met mijn nieuwe haakproject, het is bijna af!

- Genoot ik nog even na van mijn weekendje Brussel.

- Begon ik in Brussel, terwijl ik in mijn hotelbed naar het voetballen keek, aan een nieuw haakproject. Is best een lastig patroon, zo ondervond ik. Ik heb een aantal zeshoeken een paar keer moeten uithalen, omdat ik foutjes had gemaakt. Zo suf.

- Viel het nieuwe boek van Mollie Makes (Partys & Weddings) in de bus. Er staan weer zo veel leuke projecten in! Ik heb er al één uitgekozen... to be continued.

- Wandelde ik naar een bloementuin om een boeket verse bloemen te plukken. Zo leuk! Benieuwd wat er binnenkort weer in bloei staat.

This week I:
- Crocheted like a maniac on my project, it's almost finished now.

- Charished fun memories of my weekend in Brussels.

- Started a new crochet project in Brussels, while I was watching soccer in bed. The pattern is quite difficult, or so I discovered. I had to start over a couple of times, because I made mistakes. Ugh, silly me.

- Read the new book by Mollie Makes (Partys & Weddings) which contains so many lovely project. I already picked one. Yay!

- Walked to a garden where I was allowed to pick my own flowers, so I came home with a fabulous bouquet of wildflowers. I am so going there again in a while and see what flowers they have then.

A weekend in Brussels

Wie mij op Instagram volgt, zag al één en ander aan foto's voorbij komen. Ik was in Brussel, het hele weekend. Je kon hier al eerder lezen hoe gek ik ben op deze stad en dat is nog niet minder geworden. Misschien houd ik zelfs wel meer van Brussel dan van Antwerpen! Maar dat zal ik natuurlijk nooit hardop zeggen en al helemaal niet op een blog schrijven. Maar goed, Brussel dus.

If you're following me on Instagram you probably noticed: I was in Brussels all weekend long. You probably read here before how crazy I am about this city, and I grew even more fond of Brussels. Now, don't tell anyone... but I may even love Brussels more than Antwerp. Not that I would ever say that out loud, let alone write it somewhere on the internet. Anyhoo, Brussels!

Op zaterdag was er een vast programma. Normaal ben ik daar niet zo van, maar het was een heerlijke dag. We wandelden met een local als gids door de onbekende buurten van Brussel. Maakten chocolade bij Zaabär, een geweldige chocoladewinkel waar ze chocolade in alle vormen en maten verkopen. En heel veel smaken. Ik was erg onder de indruk van pure chocolade met tijm. Zelf maakte ik truffels en een chocoladereep met pistachenootjes. Zo lekker! En we hebben heel veel lol gehad.

On Saturday there was a set programm. Normally I don't like that, but it was a fantastic day! A local guided us through the unknown neighbourhoods of Brussels and we made our own chocolate at chocolatier Zaabär, Belgian chocolate at its best. They sell all kinds of chocolate. I just loved the dark chocolate with thyme. So good. And I made some truffels and a dark chocolate bar with pistachios. It was so tasty! And so much fun was had!

's Avonds aten we bij Selecto, een restaurant in de Vlaamse buurt. We kregen letterlijk en figuurlijk een kijkje in de keuken, want onze tafel was ín de keuken gedekt! Ik zat naast een wand die boordevol stond met heerlijke producten en kon eens zien hoe de chefs zich druk maakten om een geweldige maaltijd voor ons te bereiden. Ik at dan ook super: konijn en misschien wel de beste black angus die ik ooit at!

At night we ate at Selecto, a lovely restaurant in the Flemish quarter. We were literally guests in the kitches, because that's where our table was! I was sitting next to a wall that was filled with yummy things and watched the chefs as they were preparing our lovely meals. And the food was superb. I ate rabbit and maybe the best black angus I ever had.

En slapen deed ik in The Hotel in Brussel, vlakbij de Louisa. En ja, in dat hotel sliep Barrack Obama onlangs ook nog! Al gok ik dat we niet dezelfde kamer hadden. Mijn kamer lag op de 22ste verdieping: wat een uitzicht zeg, daar werd ik echt heel erg blij van. Op de 24ste verdieping was ook nog een panoramabar waar je met een drankje over de lichtjes van Brussel kon kijken. Vanuit het restaurant kijk je op het Egmondpark. En ook nog heerlijk geslapen (voor het slapen gaan nog even gehaakt, maar daarover later meer). Duur hoeft dit hotel ook niet te zijn, vooral in het weekend zijn er vaak erg leuke aanbiedingen!

I spent the night in The Hotel in Brussels, near Louiza. And yes, the same hotel Barrack Obama slept in when he recently visited Brussels. Though I doubt we had the same room. I was on the 22nd floor and had an amazing view! I was also allowed to have drinks at the panorama bar whilst watching the pretty lights of Brussels. The restaurant has a wonderful view over the Egmond Park. I slept like a baby (and did some crochet before I fell asleep, but I'll tell you about it later). If you think this is an expensive hotel, think again. They have fantastic weekend deals.

De volgende dag mocht ik wel zelf invullen en dat hoef je mij natuurlijk geen twee keer te vertellen. Ik dwaalde tussen de kitsch op het Vossenplein, de vintagewinkels van de Marollen en bezocht Atchoum, één van mijn favoriete stof- en fourniturenwinkels in Brussel. 

The next day I was allowed to do whatever I liked to do. And you don't have to tell me twice! I strolled along the kitsch of the flea markets, went to vintage shops and one of my favorite fabrics and notions shop in Brussels: Atchoum.

En daarna was het tijd voor mijn favoriete bezigheid: art nouveau spotten. Ik ben een enorme art nouveau fanaat en Brussel heeft schitterende panden. Toen ik er de vorige keer was, was het dicht, maar dit keer bezocht ik Hotel Hannon wel. En schitterend art nouveau pand. Ik was de enige bezoeker, heerlijk. Een voor de rest heerlijk met mijn neus in de lucht gelopen in St. Gilles. Helemaal geen straf.

After that it was time for one of my favorite pastimes: spotting art nouveau. I am such a fan of this style of architecture and Brussels is full of fantastic art nouveau buildings. It's one big party to just stick your nose into the air and watch all the lovely building façades. Last time I was in Brussels it was closed, but now I was able to visit Hotel Hannon, a gorgious art nouveau building. I was the only one there, it was pure heaven. 

En ook het Horta Huis en restaurant La Porteuse d'eau lagen er nog schitterend bij. Mocht je het trouwens leuk vinden om de Marollen en St. Gilles in Brussel ook wat beter te leren kennen (want barstensvol vintage winkels, leuke boetieks en stoffen- en wolwinkels), je vindt een paar leuke wandelingen in deze buurten in 100% Brussel. Maar op Mooistestedentrips.nl vind je ook veel tips. Ik ging vanaf Utrecht met de NS International trein naar Brussel, een treinkaartje heb je al vanaf €19 (en er zijn soms leuke aanbiedingen, zoals met twee personen voor de prijs van één reizen!).

Brussels: get your craft supplies!

Zoals jullie al konden lezen in mijn blog over vintage in Brussel en de bijzondere winkel Felicity, barst Brussel van de creativiteit. Natuurlijk let ik meer op ‘creatieve’ winkels sinds ik zelf achter de naaimachine en tussen de bollen wol zit (en deze gezellige blog bijhoudt!), maar ik moet zeggen: Brussel heeft schitterende winkels voor iedereen die van naaien, breien, haken en borduren houdt. En die adresjes wil ik jullie absoluut niet onthouden.

As you all could read in my blog about vintage in Brussels and the lovely shop Felicity, Brussel is packed with creative stores. Of course I pay more attention to this now that I am sewing, crocheting and crafting myself (and of course keeping this fun blog), but I just got to say: Brussel has some amazing shops for people that love sewing, knitting, embroidery and crocheting. And of course I love sharing these special places with you.

De Baljuwstraat is sowieso een winkelstraat die je even moet bekijken, want er zitten erg leuke interieur- en kledingwinkels. Maar er zitten ook een aantal pareltjes voor de creatieven onder ons.

Ook als je zelf niet naait is Zao Deco een topadres! Mooi aardewerk, lekkere spullen voor in bad en heel originele kleren, accessoires en schoenen. Daarnaast stapels Amerikaanse modestoffen en applicaties. Sla ook de rekken met bijzondere kaarten niet over.

If you feel like shopping, defenately check out Rue de Bailli with fantastic decorating stores and boutiques. But the creative ones amongst us will love some other shops.

Even if you can’t sew, Zao Deco is not to be missed. Great glasses and mugs, great smelling bath and shower products and original clothes accessories and shoes. And you’ll find designer fabrics and iron-on applications. And don’t forget to buy some gorgeous postcards on your way out.

De wolliefhebbers hoeven niet ver om te lopen, want aan de overkant van de straat kun je je hart ophalen bij Art & Fill. Een beetje rommelige wolwinkel met een supervriendelijke eigenaresse die je uren laat snuffelen en voelen en al je vragen beantwoord. Ze heeft ook een zeer indrukwekkende verzameling boeken en tijdschriften in vele taken.

Yarn lovers don’t have to go far, ‘cause across the street is Art & Fill. A yarn shop with balls and skeins of yarn on every square centimetre. The owner is a supernice lady who lets you snoop around for hours and answers all your questions. She also has a massive amount of books and magazines in many languages.

Om de hoek is de Amerikaanse straat te vinden met daar Felicity, waar ik een aantal dagen geleden al hoog over opgaf. 

And around the corner, there’s Felicty, the shop that I was raving about a few days ago.

In de Marollen vind je de leukste vintage, bijvoorbeeld aan het Vossenplein, in de Vossenstraat zit echter een topwinkel als je van sieraden maken houdt: Atchoum. Honderden kastjes, bakjes en stopflessen zijn gevuld met kralen en allerlei benodigdheden om sieraden te maken. Achterin de winkel hangen honderden rollen met band en kant aan de wand en achterin vind je de mooiste stoffen. Vergeet de kelder niet! Daar kun je leuke vintage scoren.

Around the Place de Jeu de Balle is where vintage is to be found, a true thrifters paradise. But just off the square, on Rue de Renards, is the place for the über crafter: Atchoum. Hundreds of cases, pots and bottles are filled with the most gorgeous beads and other stuff to make your own jewellery and at the back there’s an entire wall covered in rolls with biaistape and ribbons. In the back of the store you can find wonderful fabrics.

In St. Gilles is Kaleidoscope een winkel waar je uren zoet kunt zijn. De winkel is hip en ruim opgezet. Voorin hangen aan de wanden grote kasten met schitterende strengen brei- en haakgaren, achterin kun je op je gemak snuffelen tussen stapels stof en patronenboeken en rond de kassa zijn de fournituren te vinden. Zeker geen goedkope winkel, maar wel een beauty. En voor wie dit allemaal iets te duur is: op maandag staat om de hoek op de markt altijd een ontzettend leuke stoffenkraam.

You can spend hours in Kaleidoscope in St. Gilles. The store is specious and trendy. In the front of the shop there are cases on the wall filled with the most beautiful yarns and in the back you can make your way through stacks and stacks of fabrics and pattern books. Around the cash register there’s everything you could possibly need whilst sewing, knitting or crocheting. They’re not too cheap, but the store’s a beauty nevertheless. Can’t afford anything in the store? Don’t worry, every Monday you’ll find a market with a great fabric stand on it.

Lekker laagdrempelig en niet te duur is ook Veritas. Dit is een Belgische keten waar je sokken, ondergoed en accessoires kunt kopen, maar ook: wol, stoffen, knopen, borduurgaren en allerlei fournituren, boeken en tijdschriften. Deze winkel is dus niet alleen is Brussel te vinden, maar ook in Antwerpen.

Really low key and not to expensive is Veritas, a Belgian shopping chain where you can buy Socks, underwear accessories and… yarn, fabrics, buttons, embroidery thread and lots of books and magazines. This store is not only in Brussels, but you can find it in a lot of Belgian cities.

Heb ik jullie nu genoeg verteld over Brussel? Ik hoop van wel, ik vond het in ieder geval leuk om te delen. Mocht je naar Brussel gaan en verlegen zitten om advies, neem gerust even contact met me op. Ik vind het heel leuk om je te helpen.

Where to eat in Brussels: tips from a local

Mijn vriendin Linda woont in Brussel, middenin de Vlaamse wijk. Ze werkt voor een Nederlandse overheid als lobbyist (lees: typische Brusselse ambtenaar) en wilde tijdens mijn bezoekje vorige week graag een middag met me op stap, zodat ze mij haar favoriete adresjes kon laten zien. Daar zei ik natuurlijk geen nee tegen. We hebben zo’n leuke middag (oké, en avond…) gehad. Met veel pauzes in leuke cafés (research, echt!) en lang staren (verstandig, niet naar binnen gaan) voor etalages van veel te dure designers.

My friend Linda lives in Brussels, right in the Flemish district. She works for a Dutch provincial government as a lobbyist (read: a typical civil servant from Brussels) and while I was visiting last week, she really wanted to accompany me an afternoon and show me her favourite places in town. How could I refuse! We had a fantastic afternoon (okay, and evening too…). We of course had to stop in many cafés along the way (research!) and we stared at lots of shopping windows of expensive designers (how sensible of us not to go in).

Omdat tips van locals altijd de leukste zijn, vroeg ik Linda naar haar favoriete plekken in Brussel voor een hapje en een drankje en dat resulteerde in een leuk mini-interviewtje.

And because tips from locals are the best, I asked Linda about her favourite places to have a drink or a bite to eat in Brussels. And this resulted in a little interview.

‘Dit is echt de beste chocolade in Brussel. Een kop koffie of thee drinken )met chocolaatje ebrij!) kan ook.’
‘Personally, I think here you can find chocolate in Brussels. You can also have a cup of coffee or tea here and taste some wonderful stuff.’

2. De Vismet
‘Ik heb alle visrestaurants aan het St. Kathelijneplein uitgeprobeerd en dit is echt de beste. Favoriet? Het ‘Bordje van Matroos’ vol oesters, kreeft en al het goede wat de zee te bieden heeft.’
‘I tried all the fish restaurants at this square and this is defenately the best one. My favourite dish? The ‘Plate of the sailor’ full of oysters, lobsters and all the good things the sea has to offer.’

3. Le Brassins
‘Leuk eetcafé met Belgische specialiteiten. Hier vind je een gezellige mix tussen locals en toeristen. Sla de toetjes niet over!’
‘Great café where you can eat Belgian specialities. Eat with locals and tourists and don’t skip desert!’

4. L’Idiot du village
‘Dit restaurant is een beetje verstopt in een zijstraatje, maar is het zoeken waard. Hier koken ze alleen seizoensgerechten. Vooral in het wildseizoen moet je er aanschuiven.’
‘This restaurant is a little hidden in a side street, but worth the search. You can eat seasonal specialities here. Especially if you’re into eating game, this is your place.’

5. Le Cirio
‘Middenin het toeristische centrum, maar je mag het echt niet missen. Je kunt hier de hele dag wel doorbrengen met het kijken naar mensen, vooral schattige oude dametjes. Er wordt ook een degelijke lunch geserveerd en het zelf verzonnen aperitief ‘half and half’ moet je even proberen.’
‘It’s in the middle of the tourist area, but e sure not to miss this. It’s the best place for people watching. You can also have a decent lunch here and you really have to try the restaurants invented appetizer ‘half and half.’

Dit was alweer de op één na laatste dag van mijn Brussel Marathon! Tot zover genoten? Vragen? Blijf in ieder geval nog één dagje hangen, want morgen geef ik de leukste adressen om stoffen, garens, wol, lintjes, band en kant te kopen!

Brussels beautiful bricks

In Brussel is de Art Nouveau geboren, zo wordt gezegd. Hier woonden de vaders van de Art Nouveau: Victor Horta en Paul Hankar en zijn hebben hun schitterende stempel op de Belgische hoofdstad gedrukt. In welke wijk je ook komt: je neus kan de lucht in om al dat prachtigs te bekijken.

  
Art Nouveau was born in Brussels, or so they say. The fathers of Art Nouveau, Victor Horta and Paul Hankar, lived here and left an serious and gorgious mark on the Belgian capital. Whatever part of the city you're visiting: just look up and you'll see so much pretty architecture.

Vooral in de wijk St. Gilles is het genieten geblazen! Aan het Moricharplein zijn een aantal beauties te zien, maar echt feest wordt het aan de Brugmannlaan. Daar vind je bijvoorbeeld Les Hiboux (de uilen) naast het spectaculaire Hannonhuis.

 

Especially the St. Gilles quarter is packed with beauties. The Morichar Square is a good start to see some pretty Art Nouveau houses, but the best are to be seen at Avenue Brugmann. There you can see Les Hiboux (the owls) next to the Hannon house.

Maar het meest bijzondere in de wijk is het huis van de meester zelf: het Horta Museum. De trap alleen al is een bezoekje meer dan waard, maar ook de vloeren, deurstijlen, serre en zelfs het toilet zijn Art Nouveau pareltjes.

Taking pictures inside is prohibited, but these are pics from the museum itsself to give you an impression of the wonderful staircase and mirrors!

The most special thing in the area is the house of the master himself: the Museum Horta. The staircase alone is a reason to visit, but the floors, doors, hallways and even the toilets are gorgious.

Maar ook in andere wijken is genoeg te zien. In Elsene zijn een aantal mooie panden rond de St. Bonifaaskerk te vinden en ook rond de vijvers van Flagey kijk je je ogen uit. Nog een Art Nouveau gebouw van binnen bekijken? Ga dan naar het Muziekinstrumentenmuseum (MIM) wat is gevestigd in Horta's gebouw Old England, vooral het uitzicht op de bovenste verdieping in het restaurant is adembenemend.

But other areas of the cities are also a decor of Art Nouveau. In the Elsene quarter there are some impressive buildings near the St. Bonifaas Church and along the Étangs d'Ixelles (Flagey). If you'd like to see another Art Nouveau building from up close I recommend you go visit the Museum of Musical Instruments (MIM), the view from the rooftop restaurant is spectacular.

Bijna onmogelijk om Brussel niet ontzettend leuk te vinden, na al die vintage, leuke winkels en schitterende architectuur? Nog twee dagen over van de marathon. En die reserveer ik voor de lekkerbekken en de creatieven onder ons!

Hard not to like Brussels right? After all that vintage, cute shops and gorgious architecture! Still two days left of my Brussels marathon and I have these days reserved especially for people that love their food and their crafts.

Shop in Brussels: Felicity

Al twee keer was ik door de Amerikaanse Straat gelopen, totaal afgeleid door de schitterende Art Nouveau gebouwen aldaar (zoals het Horta Museum!). Maar drie keer is scheepsrecht, want tijdens mijn derde wandeling viel mijn oog op een vrolijke etalage op een hoek. Die van Felicity. Een kleurrijk paradijs! Daar moest ik even naar binnen.

Twice already I walked through Brussels Rue Américaine, completely distracted by all the wonderful Art Nouveau buildings (like that of the Museum Horta!). But as they say: three time’s a charm, ‘cause when I walked through this street again, a colourful store window caught my eye. Felicity looked like such a colourful paradise. I just had to go in.

Binnen trof ik eigenaresse Marie aan achter de naaimachine, druk bezig met het ter plekke maken van de kleurrijke, comfortabele en vrouwelijke kledingstukken en accessoires die de kledingrekken vullen. Inspiratie genoeg, want ze is omringd door stapels schitterende rollen designer stoffen, band en kant. Luz is haar partner in crime en maakt vrolijke, originele hoeden.

Inside was the lovely owner Marie busy creating one of the wonderful pieces of clothing and accessories that fill the racks of the store. Every piece is hand made, colourful, comfortable and most of all: feminine. And no wonder she’s inspired: she’s surrounded by stashes and stashes of designer fabrics, tape and ribbon. Luz is her partner in crime: she makes one of a kind, colourful hats.

Maar de dames van Felicity kijken verder dan hun neus lang is. In de winkel is veel (kleurrijk!) werk te vinden van jonge en originele ontwerpers. Zo vind je er sieraden van Parijs by G, heel veel spulletjes van Pip Studio en de stoere armbanden en riemen van Noosa Amsterdam. Zelf aan de slag? Geen probleem. Koop gewoon leuke stof van Amy Butler of Micheal Miller, mooi biaisband en ga aan de slag!

Maar je bent gewaarschuwd: Felicity verlaten zonder iets te kopen is erg moeilijk.
(En ik kan het weten… ik vertrok met 2 meter stof van Amy Butler en 2 Pip Studio kaarten)

 

The ladies of Felicity look beyond their own designs and also sell (colourful!) products of young and hip designers. You can find bijoux by Parijs by G, loads of happy stuff from Pip Studio and the cool and bold bracelets and belts by Noosa Amsterdam. Is DIY more your thing? No problem: just buy some fabric by Amy Butler or Michael Miller and some pretty biais tape and off you go!

Just one warning: it’s almost impossible to leave Felicity without buying something.
(And I'm one to know… I left with 2 meters of Amy Butler fabric and 2 Pip Studio postcards)
