A weekend of yarn fun

De hele dag praten over wol, haken en over bloggen. Is er iets leukers? Ik kan maar weinig andere dingen verzinnen in ieder geval. Vorig jaar was ik al een dagje te gast bij Scheepjes! Ook dit jaar was ik gelukkig weer van harte welkom, maar niet alleen om een beetje koffie te leuten. Er was me namelijk gevraagd om een workshop te geven over bloggen, vanuit mijn werk als webredacteur. Ontzettend eng, maar aangezien ik er veel over kan vertellen, had ik er heel veel zin in.

Does anything sound more fun than to talk about yarn, crochet and blogging, all dat long? I have thought about it, but nothing came to mind. Last year I had been a guest of Scheepjes and this year I was invited again. Yay! Not only to meet some other bloggers, but also to give a little workshop about blogging. When I am not a crazy crafter I am a journalist and (web)editor), so even though I was nervous about being in front of a group I felt I had so much useful information to share that I got all excited about it. 

Maar gelukkig mochten we eerst weer even rondlopen in de snoepwinkel die het magazijn van Scheepjes is. Grappig genoeg vind je daar dus niet alleen wolletjes, maar ook héél veel fournituren. Ik ging net als vorig jaar weer in zwijm bij de knopen, maar werd ook een beetje verliefd op de retro linten. En ja, natuurlijk heel veel wol. Gangen vol, misschien wel kilometers lang. Daar valt het hoofd maar moeilijk koel bij de houden.

But first, just like last year, we were allowed to wander around in crafters heaven: Scheepjes warehouse. The company that owns Scheepjes also owns a haberdashery wholesale, which means miles and miles of buttons, ribbons and other notions. I always feel quite light headed when I walk down the button isles (yes, plural) and this year I particularly fell in love with this retro ribbon. Must think of a project! And oh, all that glorious yarn. It was hard to keep my head cool, I tell you.

Natuurlijk mochten we ook even aan de wolletjes voelen! Zoals de nieuwe lijn Catona, een glanskatoen dat ik kleine bolletjes komt (schattig, én superhandig als je alleen kleine projectjes of amigurumi's maakt) of in gewone bollen en verkrijgbaar is in prachtige, sprekende kleuren. En het linnen dat op dit moment gebruikt wordt voor de ScheepjesCAL. Ik doe deze keer niet mee aan de CAL, omdat ik al zo veel projectjes onafgemaakt hebt liggen. Maar ik zag zo her en der al prachtige bloemen voorbij komen. Ga zo door ladies, geweldig!

Of course we were allowed to fondle the new yarns, is there anything more fun? I took a look a Catona, Scheepjes' new mercerized cotton which comes either in cute small balls (especially for those making amigurumis or small projects) or balls of a regular weight. And I particularly liked the linnen yarn that is currently used for the Scheepjes2015CAL, are you joining in? Unfortunately I am skipping this CAL (even though it looks beautiful), as I have enough unfinished projects laying around already. But I am keeping a close eye and have seen some lovely crochet flowers pop-up. So keep up the good work ladies!

Maar het allerleukste van zo'n dag zijn de bloggers. Sommige van hen volg ik al jaren, en zij mij soms ook. Dan is het net alsof je elkaar al jaren kent, terwijl je elkaar nog nooit hebt gezien. Zo reageerde Annelies (van Vicarno's) heel verbaasd: 'ik had me jouw stem héél anders voorgesteld.' Haha! En vervolgens keuvelden we alsof we nooit anders hadden gedaan. Het was ook heel leuk om de buitenlandse bloggers te leren kennen, zoals Dedri die jullie misschien wel kennen van het project Sophies Universe. Zij bracht haar project mee en ik moet bekennen, ik was er gewoon stil van. Wat mij betreft is dit gewoon kunst.

But the best part was meeting all these bloggers. Some of them I have been following for years and sometimes they follow me too. It feels like we know each other, but yet we had never met. I had such a laugh when Annelies (from Vicarno's) confessed: 'I pictured your voice so differently', and then we chatted like we had known one another forever. It was also lots of fun to meet the bloggers from outside of The Netherlands, like Dedri who is the mastermind of Sophies Universe. When she showed her finished project I got quite with admiration. To me, this really is a work of art. 

Tijdens de high tea, die overging in lunch. Konden we elkaar beter leren kennen. We waren te gast bij De Paalkoepel, aan het Paterswoldersemeer. Ik ken deze streek van Nederland helemaal niet zo goed en vond het er wonderschoon, en de hapjes zalig.

We had lunch and a high tea at De Paalkoepel, a lovely venue next to a small lake. I must admit that I don't know the north of The Netherlands that well and I thought it was beautiful up there. We just chatted and chatted, got to know each other better whilst having jummy bites to eat.

Carmen (Crafy Queens) zat naast me en priegelde zonder klagen aan een project met héle kleine granny squares.

En ik, ik werkte verder aan mijn hexagon deken. Alhoewel, eigenlijk heb ik maar 3 hexagons gehaakt en voor de rest ontzettend veel gekletst en gelachen. Ik heb genoten.

And silly old me? I worked on my hexagon blanket. Well, to be honest I only made 3 hexagons and spent most of the afternoon giggling, laughing and chatting. It was lovely!

Crocheting and new yarn, but it's for a good cause (no really!)

Alsof je mij heel hard moet dwingen om aan de haak te gaan. Maar in dit geval vond ik het wel erg leuk om een nieuwe kleurencombinatie uit te kiezen. Deze kits zijn namelijk samengesteld met geweldige kleurencombinaties én je steunt er een goed doel mee. Ik heb de haaknaald al in de aanslag.

Like I really need to be persuaded to pick new yarn and start hooking. But in this case I was really excited to look for a fun yarn combo. The yarn kit is a combo of such fun colours, oh and it's for a good cause. I am ready to hook.

Deze wol zit namelijk in pakketten waarmee je een geweldige driekhoeksjaal kunt breien of haken. Je vindt 2 haakpatronen in de tas: één voor het breipatroon en één voor het haakpatroon. Je kunt je sjaal ook nog met pompoms versieren. De opbrengst van deze wolpakketten gaat naar Kika, die jullie wel kennen van hun onderzoeken naar kinderkanker. Toch een fijn goed doel om nog even te sponsoren zo rond de kerst. Én iets moois om te maken. 

This yarn is supplied in special limited edition kits to crochet or knit a triangle scarf. Included are the knitting and the crochet pattern, the yarn and a pompom maker. And the great part is that the money from these kits is going to Kika, a foundation that researches cancer on children. A great cause to be supporting this holiday season I'd say. In de kit zitten 5 bollen Scheepjeswol. Drie met een effen kleur en twee met kleurverloop. Daarmee krijg je dus een ontzettend vrolijk verloop in je sjaal, maar ook een rustige basis. Ik moet zeggen dat ik het breipatroon ook wel leuk vind, maar weet niet of ik het wel aan durf om te breien... 

The kits contain 5 balls of Scheepjes yarn. Three solids and two multi-coloured ones. This way you'll have one funky looking scarf with a solid base. I like that. I have to say that I kind of fancy the knitting pattern for this scarf, but I am not sure if I am up for knitting...

Ik koos voor de kleurencombinatie 'Deep Ocean' omdat ik nu eenmaal gék ben op blauwen en groenen, daar sta ik als roodharige nogal goed mee. En volgens mij komen die kleuren ook best wel goed uit qua patroon. En ik heb een jas in exact die groene kleur. Blij!

I picked the combo 'Deep Ocean', I just love greens and blues. As a redhead I look quite good with these colors and I think these would work with the pattern. And I have a coat in this exact green colour. Nice huh!

Dit zijn de kleurencombinaties waar je uit kunt kiezen. Groovy hè! Ik was ook wel gecharmeerd van Burning Flames, Autumn Leaves en Rain Forest... maar het groen en blauw wint het bij mij toch altijd. De Scheepjes Kits zijn verkrijgbaar bij verschillende winkels in Nederland, waaronder bijvoorbeeld het Wolpaleis. Maar kijk vooral op de Scheepjes website voor een verkooppunt bij jou in de buurt. Trust me to find two yarn shops in Budapest

Laat ik het gewoon toegeven: ja, er zaten bolletjes katoen in mijn handbagage toen ik naar Boedapest vertrok. Maar geen haaknaald. Ik weet niet of jullie weleens met haakspullen in je handbagage hebben gereisd, maar ik wist niet zo goed waar ik moest beginnen ermee. Van een vriendin kreeg ik wel een goede tip: tandflos mee om de draadjes aan de snijder mee los te knippen (want ja, een schaar krijg je ook niet mee het vliegtuig in). Aangezien ik het niet leuk zou vinden als mijn haaknaald op Schiphol in beslag genomen zou worden, dacht ik: ik koop wel een naald in Boedapest!

I'll just admit it, I was travelling with yarn in my hand luggage to Budapest. But I left my hook at home. Have you guys ever taken crochet things on the plane in your hand luggage? I had no idea where to start. A friend of mine advised me to take silk tooth floss, so I'd be able to cut yarn with the cutter on the case of the floss. Clever! Though I didn't want to risk having to hand over my crochet hook. So I decided to buy one here in Budapest.

Achter het Kino theater vond ik 1001 Fonal (Fonal betekent garen in het Hongaars), een geweldig leuk winkeltje met superveel internationale tijdschriften en boeken (zelfs romans over breien en haken! Haak-lit zeg maar) en haak- en breigaren vaak met bamboe als basis, superzacht en ontzettend mooie kleuren. Kiezen was dan ook een bevalling. Ik heb wel 5 keer dingen terug gelegd. Uiteindelijk koos ik voor deze bolletjes, omdat ik thuis ook nog multi-gekleurd katoen heb liggen en daar heb ik wel een plannetje mee. Ook wilde ik niet het risico lopen om door mijn Budapest-katoen heen te zijn, halverwege een project. En katoen, daar vind je altijd wel wat bijpassends van.

Behind the Kino I found this lovely little yarn shop, called 1001 Fonal (Fonal means yarn in Hungarian) and it was stocked to the roof with international magazines and books (even novels on knitting and crocheting, Hook-lit s to speak) and lots and lots f glorious yarn, often with a bamboo base. So colorful and soft. It took me a while to decide, I think I must've put yarn back at least 5 times. I choose these balls because it's cotton and easy to find something matching at home. I'd be gutted if I ran out of Budapest-yarn halfway through a project.

En achter mijn hotel vond ik nog een geweldige winkel: Barka Fonal, waar een aantal superaardige dames werken. Ze zitten middenin een verhuizing, vandaar dat veel garen en naalden al naar de andere locatie waren. Maar de selectie was super! Een grote collectie van Drops, maar ook bijzondere garens, glanskatoen, Merino, Alpaca. Heel bijzonder. Hier kocht ik een haaknaals van rozenhout. En tip van de verkoopster voor in het vliegtuig: neem een houten naald (bijvoorbeeld bamboe of rozenhout), maak een flinke knot van je haar en steek de naald in je knot, zodat het 'haak' gedeelte in je haar zit. Misschien niet zo comfortabel op lange vluchten, maar voor zo'n klein eindje van Boedapest naar Amsterdam: prima.

Behind the hotel I found another yarn shop called Barka Fonal that is owned by some very enthusiastic ladies. They're in the middle of a movie, so some of the stock was already at the new location. But the selection was still nice. A large selection of Drops, but also more special yarns like Merino, shiny cotton and Alpaca. I bought a rosewood hook here. And the sales lady gave me some great advice for taking a hook on a plane. Take a wooden hook, like bamboo or rosewood, twist your hair into a big bun. Then stick the hook into your bun, so the 'hooky' side of the hook is in your hair. Clever isn't it? Not so comfy for long flights, but on a short flight from Budapest to Amsterdam, why not!

Dreaming of spring #2

Wat fijn, er zijn weer ranonkels. In deze woeste bos bloemen zaten eerst ook tulpen, maar die hebben inmiddels het loodje gelegd. Geeft niets, want deze wilde ranonkels vind ik geweldig.

Oh, this is lovely. The ranunculus are back in seasons. This bush of flowers also had a bunch of tulips in them, but they've passed on. But that's okay. I like these wild flowers just as they are.

Daarvan krijg ik weer helemaal zin in de lente en in wat lente-achtigs haken. Maar alleen groen- en geeltinten is misschien een beetje saai? Ik heb er wel genoeg, zo ondervond ik al spittend door de voorraad... oeps.

They make me long for spring! And I also want to crochet something spring-y. But just greens and yellows, isn't that a bit boring? I dunno. I do have enough of them, or so I found out whilst digging to my stash, ooooops...

Wat heeft dit nog nodig? Rood en roze? Blauw? Wit? Wat zou eens leuk zijn als nieuws lente-project? Nieuwe lente, nieuwe kansen!

Back from (crafty) Koblenz

En jullie maar denken dat ik keihard zat te werken afgelopen week. Nou, dat was ook zo. Maar afgelopen week werkte ik in Koblenz. Dat is wel fijn van het werken als freelancer: je zet je laptop weg, zoekt aansluiting met internet en je hebt een kantoor. En mijn 'kantoor' stond deze week in de huiskamer van een vriendin in Kloblenz.

I had you fooled this week, right? Thinking I was working so hard. Well, I was actually. Just last week I was working from Koblenz, Germany. That's the greatest thing from being a freelancer. You just set up your laptop somewhere, connect to the internet and you have yourself an office. And last week my office was at the house of a friend of mine who lives in Koblenz.

Wat kan ik jullie inmiddels allemaal over Koblenz vertellen? In ieder geval dat het een heel leuk stadje is dat tussen de rivieren Moezel en Rijn ingeklemd ligt met allemaal dramatisch oprijzende forten en kastelen op grote rotsen. Dat er tientallen gezellige pleintjes zijn met leuke cafés. Dat je er prima kunt winkelen (ook overdekt, wat met de kou wel een aanrader was). En dat er ontzettend veel leuke handwerkwinkels zijn!

What can I tell you guys about Koblenz, Germany? Well, I can tell you that it's a very cute town between the rivers Mosel and Rhyn and that it's surrounded by dramatic hilltops with castles and fortresses. That there are loads of lovely squares with cosy cafés. That it's a great place to go shopping (also inside some shopping malls, which was great as it was very cold). And that there are so many fantastic craft stores.

Zo was er een keur aan hele leuke wolwinkels. Bovenstaande heet 'Wollparadies' (ja, hoe toepasselijk) en heeft werkelijk alle garens van Lana Grossa. Dat is een van mijn favoriete wolmerken, omdat ze ontzettend fijne merino wol hebben (Bingo) een een schitterende lijn biologisch katoen. Ik was dus totaal in de wolken toen ik zag dat ze nog een restant Linea Pura Latte hadden. Dat is mijn favoriete biologische katoen, maar helaas stopt de fabrikant ermee. Dus als ik de hand kan leggen op wat laatste bolletjes, dan laat ik die kans niet aan me voorbij gaan!

There were so many great yarn shops. This one is called 'Wollparadies' (wool paradise, what a great name) and the store had all yarns by Lana Grossa. That's one of my favorite yarn barnds as they have a great selection of merino wool (Bingo) and a great range of organic cottons. So I went completely mad with joy when I found out they had some last balls of Linea Pura Latte. That's probably my favorite organic yarn, ever. Unfortunately the manufacturer is quitting this line, so if I get the opportunity to put my mitts on some last balls of this gorgious yarn I won't let it pass.

Ook bij Wolle Rödel kun je gemakkelijk een halfuur binnen staat. Vooral heel veel garen van Rico, wat erg prettig spul is. Maar wat me nog het meest verbaasde, is dat 'gewone' winkels, zoals supermarkten en warenhuizen, ook gewoon wol en allerlei knutselmaterialen verkopen. Dan is dat ene rekje met garen bij de Hema toch maar een beetje een aanfluiting. In de plaatselijke supermarkt, gewoon bij mijn vriendin om de hoek, hadden ze zelfs een hele wolhoek.

Also Wolle Rödel was a good place for yarn shopping. Especially a lot of Rico yarn, which I like a lot. But what surprised me the most was that 'normal' shops, like supermarkets and department stores also sell yarn and craft material. In Holland you always really have to search well for craft material and often you have to order things online 'cause you can find what you like in regular shops. I mean, even at my friends' local supermarket around the corner from her house, they had an entire yarn section. A nice surprise. 

En genoeg leuke stoffenwinkels waren er ook. Deze was echter favoriet, met de onuitsprekelijke naam (voor mij althans) Das i-Tuepfelchen. Een hele winkel vol met Amerikaanse designerstoffen, maar ook Tilda en schitterende stoffen van Duitse bodem. Ik heb mijn ogen uitgekeken. En nog belangrijker: de eigenaresse vond het prima dat ik anderhalf uur rondhing en alles op mijn gemakje bekeek.

And lots of great fabric stores as well. This one was my favorite though. It has the (for me unpronouncable) name Das i-Tuepfelchen. And it was a store completely filled with American designer fabric (also really hard to come by in The Netherlands), but also Tilda and great fabric from German designers. What a blast! And the best thing: the owners were so nice and didn't mind at all that I was looking around for about an hour and a half.

En ik nam zeker wat schatten mee naar huis. Maar goed dat ik naast mijn laptoptas dus ook een stevig, half leeg koffertje bij me had.

WIP Wednesday

In plaats van 'work in progress Wednesday', mag dit blogje eigenlijk wel 'work in progress Year' heten. Aan goede voornemens doe ik niet. Ik bedoel, als je iets wil dan moet je het gewoon doen, ongeacht wanneer. Zo stopte ik meer dan een jaar geleden met roken, gewoon ergens in november. Omdat ik er wel klaar mee was. En ik heb het niet meer gemist. En dit jaar, dit jaar staat er zo veel op stapel. En wil ik zo veel doen, dat het me een beetje overweldigd zo aan het begin van het jaar.

Instead of 'work in progress Wednesday', this blog should be called 'work in progress Year'. I never really make new years resolutions. I think they're a bit flakey. I mean, if you really want to do something. Then just do it! No matter what time of year it is. Over a year ago I quit smoking, somewhere in November if I recall correctly, because I grew tired of it. And I haven't missed it since. And this year, oh man, this year I have so many things that I want to do. So much that it just overwhelms me at the beginning of this year. 

I bought this lovely sewing book, but don't know which project to sew first!

Ik wil zo ontzettend veel doen, bereiken en verbeteren dit jaar. In december had ik mezelf even 'vrijaf' gegeven. Ik hoefde even niets. Maar ja, december is voorbij. Dus aan de slag! Maar wat eerst? Waar begin ik in vredesnaam als eerste mee? Wat heeft de meeste prioriteit (altijd een lastige vraag voor iemand die heel veel dingen leuk vindt)?

I want to do so much this year, improve so much, reach so many goals. I gave myself some time off in December and told myself not to too much for an entire month. But, it's not December anymore. Let's get cracking. But with what? What to pick from that huge list of things that I want to do and establish? What are my priorities? The latter is a very tough question for someone who loves to do many things. 

I started this lovely crochet project for myself, but ran out of yarn...

Maar oké, het is pas 2 januari. En ik heb alweer een blog getypt (blog levend en leuk houden stond op het lijstje, dus daar ben ik alvast goed mee bezig), mijn blogheader aangepast en ik ben al een behoorlijk eind onderweg met het enorme haakproject dat ik onlangs binnen sleepte. Deze week heeft mijn lief nog vakantie en daarna een hele tijd niet meer. Dus ik ga deze week ook nog even genieten van samen rommelen in huis, uitgebreid koken en James Bond films kijken.

But hey, it's January 2nd. And I have already typed a little blog (that was on my list, keep blog up to date, happy and alive), made a new blog header and I have made quite some progress on the huge crochet project. Also, my husbear still has his winter leave this week and he won't be having any time off soon, so I think it's kind of important to spend some time together too! Mess around the house a little, cook meals together and watch some good ol' James Bond movies.

Het jaar duurt tenslotte 365 dagen, tijd zat.

After all, the year has 365 days in it. I have plenty of time.
