Crochet is the answer

Het gezegde 'het maakt niet uit wat de vraag is, het antwoord is haken' gaat hier de laatste anderhalve week wel erg op. Ik volg nog maar heel weinig social media (veel te onrustig) en kijk gewoon eens per dag 's avonds het journaal. Maar toch, het coronavirus en alle maatregelen die erbij komen kijken, laten me soms eindeloos malen. En dan is haken, net als altijd, de manier om het hoofd weer lekker rustig te krijgen.

The saying 'No matter what the question is, the answer is crochet' is to me now more accurate than ever. I am hardly on social media anymore, I find it all way too disturbing at the moment. And I just watch the eight o'clock news every evening to keep up to date. But still, the coronavirus and all the measures that have been taken are with me all the time and that's a lot to take on, I find. Am I all too pleased that, as ever, crochet is the thing that soothes me at the moment. 

Pretty little things, by Scheepjes

Ben jij van de grote of de kleine projecten? In theorie ben ik persoonlijk van de grote haakpatronen. Doe mij maar een deken of een flinke sjaal. Maar soms zie ik als een berg op tegen grote projecten: niet weer een deken, wat moet ik met nog eens sjaal! En dan weet ik soms echt niet wacht ik moet maken. Kleine projectjes bieden dan echt uitkomst: ik klim uit mijn comfortzone en probeer eens wat nieuws. Vandaar dat ik Klein maar fijn van Scheepjes zo leuk vind.

Are you a fan of big of small craft projects? Personally, I play for the 'go big or go home' team. I love to crochet blankets and big shawls. But sometimes, especially when I'm busy it is just daunting to face the task of another blanket or a shawl (I have too many shawls as it is...). And then I get stuck and don't know what to crochet. Often I find that small projects get me motivated again. They drag me out of my comfort zone and before too long I have a lovely finished object in my hands. En toen waren we ineens thuis. Met z'n allen. Ongekend en ook ontzettend vreemd. De straten zijn leeg, de supermarkten bij tijd en wijlen veel te vol. Als freelancer ben ik gewend om vanuit huis te werken. Maar zo veel thuis zijn, dat is voor mij ook best een uitdaging. Vooral met man en kind de hele dag om me heen. Heb jij de kinderen ook thuis? En zijn ze oud genoeg? Misschien is het nu de tijd om ze te leren haken met deze kindvriendelijke haakpatronen.

And then we were at home. It's crazy but needed. Though it really weirds me out. The street are empty and the supermarkets feel far too full, at times. Ik heb inmiddels een heel fijne collectie hulpmiddelen die ik elke creatieveling kan aanraden, dus mocht je nog iets 'nodig' hebben voor op je lijstje... doe vooral wat inspiratie op!

Happy Snowman Scarf

Met een beetje vertraging presenteer ik, vol trots (tromgeroffel), de Happy Snowman Sjaal! Jullie konden al lezen over de voortgang van deze sjaal en hij is eindelijk af. Ik ben er ontzettend blij mee. Maar de hamvraag is: gaat mijn kleine jongen er ook blij mee zijn?

With a little delay, but full of pride I present (drum rolls), the Happy Snowman Scarf! You could have read about the progress earlier and now I've finally finished it. I am so happy about this scarf. But the real question is: will my little boy like it?

Spotlight: one happy Harlequin Blanket

De kracht van social media blijft me verbazen. Natuurlijk wordt er ook weleens wat vervelends geroepen, maar in de wereld van het haken gaat iedereen over het algemeen toch wel erg leuk met elkaar om. Daar krijg ik, oprecht, heel veel energie van. En een tijdje terug raakte ik op Instagram in 'gesprek' met Lynet. Zij had namelijk een prachtige versie gemaakt van mijn C2C Harlequin Blanket. En raad eens: ik mag Lynets foto's gebruiken, om aan jullie te laten zien. Je kunt haar zelf trouwens volgen via 100procentlynet.

The power of social media never ceases to amaze me. Of course, sometimes social media can be brutal. But in general, I find the crafting community to be supportive, curious and friendly. And that gives me loads of energy. Recently I was chatting to Lynet on Instagram. She had made a gorgeous version of my C2C Harlequin Blanket. A crochet jumper for my boy

Als ik tegen mensen vertel dat ik haak, roepen ze tegenwoordig meteen: oh, wat heeft je zoontje dan een mazzel, al die leuke handgemaakte kleertjes. Nou, valt dat effe vies tegen. Het zou een beetje te ver gaan om te zeggen dat zoonlief er nu net de reden van is dat ik veel minder tijd heb om te haken, maar het is wel zo dat de er sinds zijn geboorte gewoon veel aandacht gaat naar de combinatie gezin en werk. Helemaal logisch, maar daarom is er wel veel minder van mijn naald gekomen de afgelopen tijd als dat ik had gehoopt. Met dit project ben ik zelfs vanaf mei bezig geweest.

If I tell people that I love to crochet they tell me: oh, your little boy is so lucky with a mum that can make all his garments by hand. Well, not quite. I mean, I wouldn't go as far as to say that he's the reason that I hardly have time for crochet anymore. But truth be told, combining my job with a family is pretty time-consuming. This makes total sense, of course, and many (new) mums recognise this. But all in all, I just have a lot less time to pick up my hook. I have been working on this crochet jumper since May for crying out loud.

WIP Wednesday: about snowflakes and pancakes

Vorige week begon ik mijn nieuwe haakproject, een sjaal voor mijn kleine jongen. Nodig, want wat is het al koud geweest deze week. Dat maakt het extra leuk om aan dit project te werken en maakt dat ik ook even stevig door haakte. Want dit project mag nu eens geen vertraging oplopen!

Last week I started my brand new crochet project, a scarf for my little boy. And does he need it, it's been freezing most nights since a few days, so it's pretty cold when we go out in the morning. It does make it extra fun to work on his scarf though and it makes me hurry up. This is one crochet project that can't be delayed.

Field of daisies: crochet blanket, free pattern

Jaren terug haakte ik deze bloemetjesdeken, en ik schreef er ook een gratis haakpatroon bij. Ik heb deze deken nu opnieuw gemaakt en ook het haakpatroon in een nieuw jasje gestoken. Net even wat meer bij de tijd en in lekkere nieuwe, leuke kleurtjes. En de gehaakte bloemetjes deken heeft een nieuwe naam: de Field of Daisies Blanket, want ik vind de bloemetjes echt een beetje op Spaanse margrieten lijken. Dus, heb je zin om deze deken te haken? Years ago, I crocheted this floral crochet blanket. And I loved it. I also wrote a free crochet pattern to go along with it. But I felt it needed freshening up. Both the blanket and the pattern. So I spent my summer holiday remaking this blanket and tweaking and updating the free crochet pattern. So, I've used some spiffy lovely new colours and the crochet pattern is all up to date. I've also renamed the blanket, and it's now called the Field of Daisies Blanket. Because the flowers remind me of daisies, simple as that. If you'd like to make this blanket? Go for it! Read on.

New winter project, for my boy

Onze kleine jongen gaat zijn tweede winter in. En waar we hem vorig jaar nog in zo'n baby skipak hesen, om hem als een mini-Mechelinmannetje te vervoeren, zijn aangekomen in de fase waarbij we minstens vier keer per dag worstelen met jasjes, regenlaarsjes, wantjes en sjaals. Nu speelt onze jongen zo graag buiten, dat hij soms zelfs in zijn pyjama naar buiten probeert te ontsnappen, maar laten wij daar als verstandige ouders toch maar een stokje voor steken, hè.

Our dear little boy is experiencing his second winter. I am slightly homesick to last year when he was still a baby and we were just able to zip into a baby ski suit and take him with us like a Mini Michelin Man. Now we find ourselves wrestling with coats, hats, rain boots and mittens at least four times a day. Our boy likes to play outside so much, that he regularly even tries to escape in his pyjamas! Now, we are quite sensible parents, so that won't do.

Creative travel guide to Trier, Germany

Het was niet de eerste keer dat ik Trier in Duitsland bezocht. Sterker nog, ik was er al eens twee keer eerder geweest. Een vriendin van mij woonde er namelijk en dan ging ik bij haar op bezoek. Maar ja, dan werd er natuurlijk een hoop koffie gedronken en bijgekletst en heel weinig van de stad bekeken. Maar nu ging ik voor mijn werk en kon ik Trier eens beter leren kennen. En ik zocht natuurlijk meteen de leukste kleurrijke adresjes en een paar wolwinkels op. Het is een verrassend leuke stad voor een weekendje weg, verklap ik je alvast.

It wasn't the first time for me to visit Trier in Germany. Since I have a friend who used to live there, I visited Trier two times before. But, you know how it goes when two girls get together after not having seen each other for a while. We spent most of our time drinking coffee and chattering away and doing precious little sightseeing. But now I was visiting Trier for work and was actually able to get better acquainted with the city.

Yay, mijn patroontje van de gehaakte speelkubus met cactussen werd al goed gelezen zeg. Leuk! De meesten van jullie waren natuurlijk aan het puffen en dan wil je helemaal niet haken. I hope you all liked the crochet play cube I showed you in my last blog post. It was almost impossible to wipe the grin off my face as I was writing up the crochet pattern. It's such a fun project to make, and not difficult at all once you get the hang of it. And a play cube like this makes for an excellent newborn gift. Just saying. Wat vind ik de reacties op mijn blog toch altijd leuk, zowel hier als op Facebook en Instagram hoor. Ik lees ze allemaal. Ik vond het leuk om te lezen wat iedereen in de zomer zoal haakt. Veel van jullie zijn inmiddels met zomervakantie, denk ik. Dus als tijd en gezin het toelaten, zal de haaktas wel worden gepakt. Mijn vakantie met man en kind zit er al op, die maakten we in juni. En we hebben er nog één tegoed in september. Maar zomer betekent voor mij ook Tour de France kijken en dan haak ik heel wat meters weg en in dit geval, ook kruissteken.

Oh my, how I love the reactions on my blog. I read every single one of them, here, on Facebook and on Instagram. I really enjoyed reading which project everyone was working on this summer. A lot of you are already celebrating the summer holidays I figure (and my antipodean friends have their Christmas in july break) and are all crocheting away, weather and family permitting. Husband, boy and be already had our vacation in June and we're taking another break in September. But summer means, for me, watching of the Tour de France so I was happy the last few weeks to crochet away, and cross-stitch away.

Some scoops of new yarn

In de zomer vind ik het nog weleens moeilijk om te bedenken wat ik ga haken. Een deken kan zo maar te warm zijn, want hoe langer deze wordt, des te meer lig je eronder. Ik heb echt genoeg sjaals, nou ja... voorlopig dan. Gelukkig bedacht ik zo maar, spontaan, een nieuw project en gelukkig geen tekort aan garen. Wat haak jij graag in de zomer?

In the summertime, I sometimes find it hard to decide what to crochet. A blanket can be too warm. As the longer it gets, the more time you'll spend underneath it. And shawls. Well, I do have enough of those. For now, at least. But luckily, I thought of a really cool new project and didn't have to think long about which yarn to use. What do you like to crochet in summer?
