On the business of joining granny squares

Vierkantjes haken. Sommige mensen vinden het verschrikkelijk, anderen vinden het fantastisch. Persoonlijk houd ik erg van het haken van vierkantjes, maar niet van het wegwerken van al die draadjes. Ik kan me ook voorstellen dat stapels en stapels vierkantjes, die je dan nog aan elkaar moet haken niet motiveert. Daarom haak ik granny squares graag 'as you go' aan elkaar. Er zijn verschillende manieren om dit te doen, dus ik zet de leukste even voor je op een rijtje.

Het is zover, eindelijk had ik genoeg vierkantjes bij elkaar om aan elkaar te gaan maken. Ik begon vol goede moed aan de Scheepjeswol CAL, maar al gooiden mijn werk, reizen en een flinke verbouwing roet in het eten. Gelukkig heb ik tijdens de kerstvakantie flink kunnen door haken en kwam ik aan 66 vierkantjes, 6 meer dan eigenlijk hoefde, maar ik ga dan ook voor een extra grote deken.
Finally, I have enough squares to start joining them. I started the Scheepjeswol CAL full of enthusiasm early fall, but my work, travel and home construction got in the way. Luckily, during my Christmas break I had enough time to catch up and made it to 66 crochet squares. 6 more than was required, but I am aiming for a big ol' blanket.
Maar het probleem was: beide methodes die werden gegeven om de vierkantjes aan elkaar te haken, vond ik niet mooi. Ik ga niet lullig doen: ik vind dat de CAL Patronen echt fantastisch waren. Je zult maar elke week, 10 weken lang, originele gehaakte vierkantjes moeten verzinnen die dan aan het einde van de rit perfect bij en op elkaar passen. Er werd gekozen voor vasten of een zigzag methode om de vierkantjes aan elkaar te maken. Het vasthaken met vasten vind ik een prima methode, vooral als je nog niet zo lang haakt. Maar ik vind deze methode mooier voor kleinere vierkantjes. De zigzag methode vind ik niet stevig genoeg voor zo'n flinke deken. En dus verzon ik er zelf wat op.
The problem was however, that I didn't like the 2 methods that were given to join the crochet squares. Now, I am no bully. I think most of the CAL Patterns were really great and I have such respect for the designer. I mean, it's incredibly hard to come up with a different square for 10 weeks in a row and have those squares match at the end of the road. The slip stitch joining that was explained is a rather easy way to join squares and especially nifty for those who aren´t too experienced in crochet. I like this method better for smakker squares. And I wasn´t sure the zigzag method would be steardy enough for such a big blanket. So, I came up with my own joining method, so I can join the squares as I go.
Eigenlijk is het heel gemakkelijk, ik haakte telkens 2 halve stokjes en 1 losse. In de hoeken haak ik *2 halve stokjes, 1 losse, 2 halve stokjes*. Zodra je aan elkaar gaat haken, haak je geen losse, maar een halve vaste (bovenlangs) in de losse ruimte van het andere vierkantje. In de hoeken haak je een halve vaste in álle tegenoverliggende hoeken. Da's even prutsen, maar het ziet er wel mooi uit.
It is really easy. I hooked 2 HDC's + CH 1. In the corners I made * 2 HDC CH1 2HDC*. As soon as you start joining you don't chain 1, but you slipstitch in the chain 1 space of the other square. Once you reach the corners you slipstitch in all other corners too. It's quite fidgety, but it will look good.

De afgelopen jaren zag ik ze wel vaker voorbij komen: Crochet Alongs, ofwel een CAL volgens de haak-hipsters. Maar ik moet eerlijk bekennen dat de patronen mij nooit dusdanig aanspraken dat ik dacht: laat ik eens mee doen. Totdat ik van het initiatief van A Creative Being hoorde. Er zouden vierkantjes gehaakt worden voor een deken bij deze CAL en het gekozen garen was Cotton8 van Scheepjeswol. Ik ben gék op vierkantjes haken en ik ben gék op Cotton8. En dus ga ik de uitdaging aan.

Nu had ik nog een berg restjes Cotton8 liggen van de Nordic Shawls die ik maakte, dus het leek me een goed idee om alle kleurtjes van die projecten bij elkaar te zoeken en misschien nog wat anders aan katoen dat ik op naald 3 mm kan haken. En zo kwam ik uiteindelijk tot een bonte verzameling roze, paars, grijs, blauw, oranje en groen. Dat wordt nog spannend dus.
I had a lot of Cotton8 left from making the Nordic Shawls, so I decided to gather all those balls I had left and also look for some other cotton in my stash that could be hooked on a 3 mm hook. So now I have a rather flamboyant collection of pinks, greys, blues, purples, greens and orange. It's going to be interesting.
En natuurlijk maakte ik het mezelf gelijk weer wat moeilijker, waarom ook niet! Normaal gesproken moet je 6 vierkantjes per week haken, maar ik besloot om er wekelijks wat meer te haken. Met mijn lange benen en de enorme ledematen van mijn echtgenoot is 'hoe groter, hoe beter' een goed credo voor een deken!
Tot nu toe valt het haken me erg mee en leer ik leuke nieuwe patroontjes haken. Kun je geloven dat ik nog nooit in mijn haakcarrière een popcorn had gehaakt! Nu dus wel en ik ben stiekem wel een beetje gek op ze. Die gaan vast mooi uitkomen in een deken.
Doen jullie ook mee aan de CAL? Gaat het goed?
And of course I had to make things difficult for myself immediately, not to anyone's surprise. Normally you have to crochet 6 squares a week, but I have decided to make more. I mean, with my long legs and my husbands lanky limbs 'the bigger, the better' is a good motto when crocheting a blanket.
Up until now I think things are going rather well and I am learning some new square patterns, which I like. Can you believe that in all this time I've been crocheting, I had never crocheted a popcorn stitch yet? Well, I have now and I have to say that I quite like the look of them. They'll probably work very nicely in a blanket.
So, are you working on this CAL too? And if you are, how's it going?

WIP Wednesday

'Ik regeer wel bij een beetje chaos'. Mensen die mij een beetje kennen, weten dat ik bij deze uitspraak leef. Dat ik het zalig vind om allerlei projecten tegelijkertijd in goede banen te leiden en dat ik er met gemak wat spoedjes tussendoor prak. Een beetje roering in de tent is heerlijk, het zorgt ervoor dat ik niet inkak. Best handig, zo als ondernemer. Want gelukkig valt er een hoop te plannen, maar lang niet alles. Dan is een beetje flexibiliteit wel prettig. Maar af en toe, tijdens een rustig moment, kijk ik zo eens om me heen en grinnik: hm, misschien overdrijf je wel een beetje met al die chaos.
'I rule when there's chaos'. People who know me a little, know that I live by these vey words. I really enjoy taking on several projects, working on them at the same time and making sure the end result of all these projects is perfect. And lastminute work? I can handle that even better. I do love that rush. It makes me feel alive, I guess a rut is the worse thing that could happen to me. The fact that I can handle chaos pretty well, works in my advantage now that I have my own business. 'Cause there's lots of things that can be planned in advance, but there are always these things that jump up at you expecting immediate attention. So it's good to be flexible. But ever now and then I take a moment to look around and grin to myself: okay, maybe I'm taking that whole chaos thing a bit too far.
Neem nou de fauteuil in onze woonkamer. Die is meestal het decor van één of ander haakproject waar ik aan bezig ben. Er zit eigenlijk zelden iemand in die stoel, vanwege de stapels wol. Bovenstaande deken in de maak is trouwens weer een heel geval apart (en typisch een gevalletje ultieme chaos), maar daarover later meer... Vanavond komt mijn beste vriendin eten en aangezien het wel zo netjes is om gasten een stoel aan te bieden, zullen de bollen uit de stoel moeten verdwijnen. Dat wordt nog even goochelen. Maar het kan erger...
Now take this arm chair in our livingroom for example. To be honest, hardly anyone ever sits in that chair as there's always yarn in or on it while I work on a crochet project. This blanket by the by, is a perfect example of ultimate chaos. But I'll tell about this odd case in a different post! Tonight my best friend is coming over and since modern etiquette tells us one should offer guests a chair, I guess I have to clean all this up. I'll have to work my magic for that to happen. But it could be even worse...
Want tegen de achterkant van de fauteuil staat nog een tas met wol geparkeerd, met daaruit een granny deken in de maak. Blijkbaar is werken aan één deken tegelijkertijd niet genoeg. Nee, ik moest natuurlijk ook aan een ander project beginnen waar ik zo maar ineens, zonder reden, zin in kreeg. Aan een goede ingeving moet ik dus meteen toegeven. Niet meer te redden, toch?
'Cause there's another bag of yarn and a granny square blanket in progress parked against the back of the arm chair. Apparently, working on one blanket at the time isn't good enough. Noooo, of course I had to give in at the first hunch I got for a new project and start it right away. Seriously, there is no saving me.
Gelukkig valt er nog veel meer te grinniken. Want terwijl ik de voorjaarsbloemen in huis haalde, werd er om mij heen gezucht en gesteund vanwege 'de winter die er nu echt aan komt'. Terwijl het noorden van Amerika en heel Canada zucht en steunt onder enorme sneeuwstormen en ranzig lage temperaturen, krijgen wij de komende twee dagen (ja, twee hele dagen) te maken met temperaturen rond het vriespunt. Ja mensen, de winter valt dit jaar op woensdag en donderdag! Haal uw husky's maar uit het vet!

Luckily there's a lot more to grin at in my corner of the world. 'Cause while I bought these spring flowers, I listened to the moaning around me 'as winter was now really hitting The Netherlands'. While people in the northern states of the US and the whole of Canada can't get to work because of blizzards and crazy low temperatures, the Dutch are complaining because the next two days (yes, two whole days) it will freeze a few degrees. Yes people, winter will come around on a Wednesday and Thursday this year. Please get your sleddogs from the parking!

Two granny square blankets for a London canal boat

Op zo'n dag dat het buiten geen moment droog is en het maar vies en donker is, moet ik een hele trukendoos opentrekken om fatsoenlijk foto's te kunnen maken. Zo lag ik vandaag op mijn buik middenin de woonkamer en stond ik op het keukentrapje in de slaapkamer. Maar deze dekens wilde ik jullie wel heel graag laten zien.
On a day like this when it doesn't stop raining for one second and it's just dreary and dark, I have to go through loads of trouble to take some decent pics. And that's why I was laying flat on my belly on the living room floor and standing on a small ladder in our bedroom today. And all this because I really wanted you guys to see these blankets.
Want ik heb dus niet één, maar twee granny square dekens om te laten zien! Zien jullie de verschillen? De granny squares zelf zagen jullie al voorbijkomen. Alle 110 (uiteindelijk had ik me misrekend en moesten het er 132 worden, oeps). Het verschil zit hem in de afmetingen: het is één deken van 75 cm x 125 cm en één van 75 cm x 150 cm.
'Cause I haven't made one but two of these granny square blankets. Can you spot the differences? You have seen the granny squares for this project. All 110 of them (well, I miscalculated and ended up maing 132 granny squares, oops). One of the differences is the size. One blanket is 75 cm x 125 cm and the other is 75 x 150 cm.
Die afmetingen zijn behoorlijk vreemd, dat geef ik meteen toe. Maar daar is een hele goede reden voor. Die dekens zijn namelijk voor een woonboot en niet zo maar een woonboot, een echte Engelse Canal Boat (zoals je ziet op de foto). Deze vaak vintage boten zijn een stuk platter dan de Nederlandse variant, varen ook daadwerkelijk en liggen dieper in het water. Ze zijn ook behoorlijk smal. En een vriendin van mij woont in zo'n ding, in één van de kanalen van Londen. Ze kocht een tijdje geleden een Canal Boat en knapte deze helemaal op, met oog voor het verleden. Tijdens haar inspiratie-speurtocht stuitte ze op een foto van een Canal Boat met granny square dekens op de smalle banken. En daar kwam ik om de hoek kijken.
The measurements are really weird, I admit that. But I have a good reason for that. Those blankets will find a new home on a real English Canal Boat (like the one you see in the pic). These often vintage boats are rather flat and small and are deep into the water. On the inside they're very cosy, but not that big. A friend of mine owns one and lives on it in one of the London canals. She bought a Canal Boat a while back and spent quite some time and money renovating it. On her quest for inspiration she stumbled upon a picture of two small couches within a canal boat draped with granny square blankets. And that's when I come in.
Ik gebruikte Stylecraft, dat is zo zacht en lekker om mee te haken. Bovendien is het heel duurzaam. Dat moet ook wel op een boot! De kleuren zijn zeker niet standaard te noemen en ik heb er ontzettend aan moeten wennen. Maar als je zo eens kijkt naar de kleuren van de Canal Boat, die vintage en industriële kleuren (donkergroen, purper, donkerrood, okergeel) dan komt het allemaal wel ontzettend goed tot zijn recht. Ik haakte, lekker losjes, met haaknaald 4,5. Mijn ripple blankets geef ik nooit een randje, die hebben dat niet zo nodig. Maar een granny square deken: die kan juist niet zonder! Ik gebruikte nog verschillende kleuren in de randen en werkte het af met haar patroon. Het geeft de dekens een geweldige vintage uitstraling, die randen maken het echt af.
I used Stylecraft, it's incredibly soft and so great to work with. Also, it's very durable. Well, it has to be on a Canal Boat. The colours are anything but common and I really had to get used to them. But if you look at the colours of canal boats they're all very vintage and industrially inspired. So I picked plums, burgondies, warm green and mustard. I think it'll really fits. I used a 4.5 mm hook so the blankets would be nice and flexible. And I hooked two humongous boarders. I never hook a boarder around my ripple stitch blankets, but I think a nice edging is a must for granny square blankets. I used different colours for the two blankets, but used her pattern to edge the granny square blankets. They really give the blankets a lovely vintage finish.
Ik vind het wel erg leuk om aan zo'n bijzondere opdracht mee te werken. Binnenkort vertrekken de dekens richting Londen. Ik wens ze een plezierige vaart.
For me it was a great assignment and I loved making these blankets. Soon they will leave for London. I wish them plain sailing.

On a day like this when it doesn't stop raining for one second and it's just dreary and dark, I have to go through loads of trouble to take some decent pics. And that's why I was laying flat on my belly on the living room floor and standing on a small ladder in our bedroom today. And all this because I really wanted you guys to see these blankets.
Want ik heb dus niet één, maar twee granny square dekens om te laten zien! Zien jullie de verschillen? De granny squares zelf zagen jullie al voorbijkomen. Alle 110 (uiteindelijk had ik me misrekend en moesten het er 132 worden, oeps). Het verschil zit hem in de afmetingen: het is één deken van 75 cm x 125 cm en één van 75 cm x 150 cm.
'Cause I haven't made one but two of these granny square blankets. Can you spot the differences? You have seen the granny squares for this project. All 110 of them (well, I miscalculated and ended up maing 132 granny squares, oops). One of the differences is the size. One blanket is 75 cm x 125 cm and the other is 75 x 150 cm.
Die afmetingen zijn behoorlijk vreemd, dat geef ik meteen toe. Maar daar is een hele goede reden voor. Die dekens zijn namelijk voor een woonboot en niet zo maar een woonboot, een echte Engelse Canal Boat (zoals je ziet op de foto). Deze vaak vintage boten zijn een stuk platter dan de Nederlandse variant, varen ook daadwerkelijk en liggen dieper in het water. Ze zijn ook behoorlijk smal. En een vriendin van mij woont in zo'n ding, in één van de kanalen van Londen. Ze kocht een tijdje geleden een Canal Boat en knapte deze helemaal op, met oog voor het verleden. Tijdens haar inspiratie-speurtocht stuitte ze op een foto van een Canal Boat met granny square dekens op de smalle banken. En daar kwam ik om de hoek kijken.
The measurements are really weird, I admit that. But I have a good reason for that. Those blankets will find a new home on a real English Canal Boat (like the one you see in the pic). These often vintage boats are rather flat and small and are deep into the water. On the inside they're very cosy, but not that big. A friend of mine owns one and lives on it in one of the London canals. She bought a Canal Boat a while back and spent quite some time and money renovating it. On her quest for inspiration she stumbled upon a picture of two small couches within a canal boat draped with granny square blankets. And that's when I come in.
Ik gebruikte Stylecraft, dat is zo zacht en lekker om mee te haken. Bovendien is het heel duurzaam. Dat moet ook wel op een boot! De kleuren zijn zeker niet standaard te noemen en ik heb er ontzettend aan moeten wennen. Maar als je zo eens kijkt naar de kleuren van de Canal Boat, die vintage en industriële kleuren (donkergroen, purper, donkerrood, okergeel) dan komt het allemaal wel ontzettend goed tot zijn recht. Ik haakte, lekker losjes, met haaknaald 4,5. Mijn ripple blankets geef ik nooit een randje, die hebben dat niet zo nodig. Maar een granny square deken: die kan juist niet zonder! Ik gebruikte nog verschillende kleuren in de randen en werkte het af met haar patroon. Het geeft de dekens een geweldige vintage uitstraling, die randen maken het echt af.
I used Stylecraft, it's incredibly soft and so great to work with. Also, it's very durable. Well, it has to be on a Canal Boat. The colours are anything but common and I really had to get used to them. But if you look at the colours of canal boats they're all very vintage and industrially inspired. So I picked plums, burgondies, warm green and mustard. I think it'll really fits. I used a 4.5 mm hook so the blankets would be nice and flexible. And I hooked two humongous boarders. I never hook a boarder around my ripple stitch blankets, but I think a nice edging is a must for granny square blankets. I used different colours for the two blankets, but used her pattern to edge the granny square blankets. They really give the blankets a lovely vintage finish.
Ik vind het wel erg leuk om aan zo'n bijzondere opdracht mee te werken. Binnenkort vertrekken de dekens richting Londen. Ik wens ze een plezierige vaart.
For me it was a great assignment and I loved making these blankets. Soon they will leave for London. I wish them plain sailing.

Hoeveel bollen Drops Paris er in deze twee kussenslopen gegaan zijn? Ik heb geen idee: tientallen, letterlijk. Deze twee granny square kussenslopen haakte ik in opdracht en zijn maar liefst 61x61 centimeter groot. Letterlijk en figuurlijk een enorme klus.
I have no clue how many balls of Drops Paris yarn I actually used to make these pillow cases. I lost count to be honest. But I guess it's a few dozen. Literally. Why? Well, these two granny square pillow covers are big. And when I say big, I'm not lying to you. They are 61x61 cm (24x24 inch) big. So this was definately an enormous job to do.
De ontvanger van deze kussenslopen koos de kleuren uit én de volgorde. Voor mij wel gemakkelijk, want zo kon ik lekker door haken. Dat was ook wel nodig met deze afmetingen, want het heeft wel een paar weken geduurd voordat ze af waren. Vier lappen van 61x61, poeh... ik voel het nog!
The lovely Canadian woman ordering these pillow cases picked the colors and the pattern herself. So all I had to do was crochet. Sounds easy, but it was hard work. It took me a couple of weeks to finished these! I mean 4 giant squares of 24 x 24 inch... I'm still aching.
En laten we eerlijk zijn: zo'n hittegolf haakt toch ook net iets minder lekker weg! Maar het is gelukt, de tientallen draadjes zijn weggewerkt en de vintage knopen zijn eraan genaaid. Dus nu kan het pakket op weg naar Canada (zo leuk!) en kan ik weer gaan freestyle-haken!
And even though I just love to crochet and work on granny squares, the weather wasn't exactly motivating me. I mean, there was quite the heatwave going on in The Netherlands over the last few weeks. So I am really happy to have finished these pillow cases and now this parcel is on its way to Canada (yes, how cool!). After my right wrist starts hurting, I am ready for some freestyle crochet!

De laatste paar weken draait het zowel bij mijn naaimachine als mijn haaknaald om vierkanten. Ik ben bezig met een enorm haakproject waarvoor behoorlijk grote vierkanten gehaakt moeten worden. Superleuk natuurlijk, maar wat een katoen gaat daarin zitten zeg. Kilometers! Ik heb zelfs al katoen moeten bijbestellen. Misschien toch tijd voor aandelen in de wolhandel?
The last few weeks it has been all about squares with me, both on the sewingmachines and on the hook. I am working on this huge crochet project and I am hooking some very large squares. It's coming along nicely, but man amount of cotton yarn I'm using. Wow! Miles and miles. I had to order new cotton, even. Maybe I should think about getting some shares!

En dan knipte ik ook nog eens zo'n 80 vierkantjes voor dit project. Doodeng, nog nooit gedaan, dus ik kom voor allerlei verrassingen en vraagstukken te staan. Maar... ik geef niet op! Wordt vervolgd.
And I also cut 80 squares for this project. So scary, 'cause I've never done anything like this before. So I am facing all kinds of questions and problems. But I am ot giving up. To be continued...

Af en toe is het heerlijk om niet na te hoeven denken bij een opdracht: welke kleuren moet ik kiezen, in welke volgorde zal ik ze haken? Dat was allemaal niet nodig, want ik kreeg een opdracht waarbij het al helemaal was uitgedacht. Het enige dat ik moest doen is wol kopen en haken. Normaal gesproken zou ik het jammer vinden dat mijn eigen creativiteit er niet aan te pas komt, maar de kleurkeuze was leuk en het patroon gewaagd. Dus, waarom niet?
Every now and then I love not having to think about a custom order: which colours to pick, which pattern to crochet. This time I got a custom order by someone who had it all figured out: colours and pattern. So all I had to do was get the yarn and crochet. Now normally I would think it's a pitty that I wouldn't be able to put my own creativity into it. But this time I didn't mind as I love the colour combi and I think the pattern is very unorthodox. So yeah, I'm jumping right in!
De kleuren doen mij enorm aan Cath Kidston denken: helemaal niks mis mee dacht ik zo. Het is best een groot project en het zal wel even duren voor het af is. Ik houd jullie op de hoogte. En het garen is natuurlijk Drops Paris, wederom besteld bij Echt Studio. Ik kan eigenlijk net zo goed aandelen nemen in Echtstudio, want ik bestel er genoeg (ze zijn dan ook vreselijk betrouwbaar enzo).
The colours make me think about Cath Kidston, nothing wrong with that I say. It's a rather big project, so it will probably take me a while before it's finished. I'll keep you posted. The yarn I am using is Drops Paris, one of my favorite yarns. I bought it at Echtstudio, a really great Dutch online yarn store. I might as well get some shares in this store, as I am ordering so much there at the moment.
Ondanks dat ik maandag nog een beetje liep te simmen, zo in mijn eentje als freelancer (dat heb ik écht zelden, maar het was gewoon zo'n dag), was ik vandaag weer zo blij met mijn vogelvrije bestaan. Want ik schoof gewoon wat heen en weer met mijn werkzaamheden, zodat ik tussen de middag tijd had om in het zonnetje naar het centrum te fietsen en een zálig broodje te halen bij KEEK, een hele leuke koffie- en broodjeszaak aan de rand van het centrum van Utrecht. Dit is een broodje met eiersalade en pesto en ik heb er uren tsjokvol van gezeten. Lekker!
Even though I was a bit sad all by myself last Monday (I rarely feel that way about freelancing, I guess it was just one of those days), I felt pretty good about being as free as a bird today. I just went a bit creative with all that needed to be done and took an hour long lunch break to cycle to the city centre in the sun and get me a fabulous sandwich. This one is egg salad and pesto and was so good, I was stuffed for hours. Yum.
Genieten jullie ook zo, nu het goede weer eindelijk (!) hier is? Ons balkon is eindelijk helemaal af, vol met bloemen, groenten en kruiden. Laat de bijen en hommels maar komen! En nee, nog geen blote benen (te wit!), maar al wel blote voeten. Zo fijn.
Are you enoying good weather where you are? I am so glad it's finally arrived here. The balcony is finally finished and it's filled with flowers, veggies and herbs. I hope we get lots of bees and bumblebees. And no, no bare legs yet (too pasty!), but I love walking around on bare feet. It's the best.

Oh, wat een tegenvaller was dat zeg! Zo'n kou na de afgelopen week met zalig lenteweer. Ik hoopte dat het door zou zetten en mijn lief en ik dit weekend lekker konden gaan wandelen, bij Baarn bijvoorbeeld of Lage Vuursche. Maar er kwam niets van: regen, sneeuw en veel kou.
Oh, what a bummer! After last week brought sunshine, warmth and the hope for spring I was so hoping this weekend would be wonderful as well. I was hoping me and the husbear could go for a hike in the woods nearby. But none of that. Instead of spring we got rain, snow and a lot of cold.
Maar gelukkig was er genoeg wielrennen op televisie en moest ik nog wat werken, dus ik hield mezelf wel bezig. En tijdens het kijken van het wielrennen (die mannen reden ook door de kou zeg, in Italië!) is het lekker haken. Het mooiste van een deken haken... is dat je er zelf onder ligt tijdens het maken. Daar word je vanzelf warm van!
But lucky for me a lot of cycling was broadcast on tv this weekend and I had some work left to do. And whilst watching the cycling (those poor boys were suffering in the cold Italian hills!) there's a lot of crocheting one can do. The good thing about crocheting a blanket is... that you're underneath in whilst making it. Nice and warm I tell you. Utter bliss.
Deze granny deken begon ik begin februari. Met deze deken (hopelijk een erg enorm exemplaar) hoop ik een deel van mijn voorraad op te haken. Tot nu toe gaat dat prima en het wordt een erg vrolijk geheel. Ook de losse eindjes heb ik voor een groot deel weggewerkt. Maar klaar? Nog lang niet! Hoeft ook niet, ik mag er het hele jaar over doen.
I started this granny square blanket in Februari. Hopefully this (probably massive) blanket will help me bust my yarn stash, or a large part of it. Until now, it't going pretty well. And it looks sooo nice! I am also weaving in ends here and there. But finished? Not by a long shot. But that's ok, I am 'allowed' to work on this all year.
En een cake bakken is natuurlijk ook de moeite niet, maar die moeite neem ik dus nauwelijks als het lekker weer is en ik alleen maar naar buiten wil. Maar op zo'n grauwe, koude zondag? Perfect!
Baking a cake is not a lot of trouble of course. But I hardly bake when the weather is nice and I just want to go outside and play. But on a grey and cold day like today? Purrrfect.

Wat mij betreft moeten sommige dingen gewoon blijven werken, altijd. Gewoon, omdat je er de hoofdpijn niet van wilt. Dus toen afgelopen donderdag mijn laptop ineens niets meer deed, zat ik toch even te kijken. Klik, nog een keer klik. Nee hoor, helemaal niets. Opnieuw opstarten lukte niet meer, maar gelukkig kon ik in de beveiligde modus mijn belangrijkste documenten nog redden. Van mijn foto's had ik onlangs nog een backup gemaakt. Gelukkig maar.

Natuurlijk komt het nooit uit als je laptop de geest geeft, maar nu was het echt beroerde timing. Ik was net bezig aan twee artikelen voor een tijdschrift en ook voor Robin Magazine had ik van alles in de pijpleiding. Hoe frustrerend. Mijn laptop heb ik even naar de computerdokter gebracht en hij is gelukkig niet overleden. Hij heeft alleen een harde schijf bypass nodig, wat EPO, een goed gesprek en daarna kan hij er weer tegenaan.
Some things are not allowed to break down, ever! Just because you don't want to have the headache of thinking about it. So when my laptop broke down last Thursday, I just say there, staring at the frozen screen in disbelief. Clicking, clicking, but no life was left in it. I couldn't reboot the things, but luckily I managed to save some important work files in safe mode. Luckily I had made a back up of my pics a few weeks back. Smart me.
Of course it's always bad timing when your laptop dies on you, but for me the timing was horrible. I was working on two magazine features and was also working on some stuff for Robin Magazine. Frustrating! I took my laptop to the computer doctor and luckily it hasn't completely died. It needs a hard drive bypass, some EPO and a good conversation and then we're good to go again.
Vandaar dat het zo stil om mijn persoon was. Ik moest namelijk de strijd aan met mijn geliefde om op zijn 'dingetje' te werken. En dat zeg ik met liefde hoor. Maar zijn 'dingetje' is een netboekje dat in je binnenzak past, dus lekker werken... nou nee. Laat staan foto's bewerken!
That's why it was so quiet on here. Because I had to fight with my love to work on his little ' thingemy'. And I mean that in the most loving way. But his 'thingemy' is a tiny netbook that fits into your jacket pocket. Not so great to work on, let alone edit pictures on it.
Maar zo'n computerloos weekend heeft ook z'n voordelen. Je blijft niet nodeloos blogs lezen of shoppen op Etsy. Maar je neemt even de tijd om wat lekkers te bakken en kruipt eens uitgebreid achter de naaimachine. Wat je hierboven ziet is echt een superleuk project, ik zal het zo snel mogelijk (nou ja, zo snel het 'dingetje' het aan kan) proberen online te zetten.
But having a computerless weekend has its advantages. Je don't keep reading blogs endslessly nor shop on Etsy the whole time. You just take the time to bake some brownies and spend some time behind the sewing machine. This project is really great! I hope I'll be able to put this project online as soon as possible, or as fast as the thingemy can handle it.
En mijn toekomstige 'Enorme Granny Square Deken' heeft ook meteen al wat vooruitgang geboekt vanwege het computerloze weekend, dus dat is eigenlijk ook wel fijn. Al met al een hele fijne, rustige zondag. Maar hopelijk heb ik toch snel mijn laptop weer terug, zodat ik weer gemakkelijk dingen met jullie kan delen.
And my future 'Enormous Granny Square Blanket' project also started of swiftly because of this computerless weekend. So thaht's kind of cool too. But even though I loved this quiet weekend I still hpe to get my computer back asap, so I can properly start sharing things with you again!

Oooh, nog steeds veel te druk. En eigenlijk helemaal geen tijd om te haken. Maar ik mis het wel en ik vind haken ook zo ontspannend. Dus vandaag ben ik toch stiekem maar weer aan wat nieuws begonnen.

Deze deken spotte ik bij 'According to Matt' en ik vind het helemaal geweldig! Dus reden genoeg om eens in de wolvoorraad te duiken. Nu moeten jullie weten dat, toen ik onlangs met twee enorme tassen vol haakgaren bij de cover shoot van Robin Magazine aan kwam zetten, ik voor mezelf moest toegeven: ik heb een wolverslaving. Want die twee tassen... dat was alleen het katoen nog maar! Nieuwe wol kopen voor dit project was dus volstrekt onnodig!

Now you must know that when I arrived at the cover shoot of Robin Magazine with two large bags full of yarn, I just had to admit: I have a yarn addiction. 'Cause those two bags... that was just my cotton stash! So buying new yarn for this project? Totally unnecessary!
En geloof me, dit is nog lang niet alle wol die ik ga gebruiken voor dit 'Stashbuster' project. Ik gebruik 100% acryl of een wol-acryl combi. En met die kleine granny squares zal het ook wel een tijd gaan duren voordat deze deken klaar is. Maar ik heb met mezelf afgesproken dat ik er het hele jaar over mag doen. Lekker relaxt.
And trust me, this isn't nearly all the yarn I am going to use for this 'Stashbuster' project. I am using 100% acrylic yarns or acrylic-wool blends. And with these tiny granny squares it'll take a while before the blanket is finished. But I promised myself I can take all year to finish it. Nice and relaxing.
And sleepover cat? She's okay with everything and is just rolling around on the warm heating pipes just under the floor boards. Now that's the life!

Vanaf dat de wekker 's ochtends gaat, ben ik meteen met vijf dingen tegelijk bezig. Allemaal ontzettend leuke, en spannende, dingen dat wel. Natuurlijk ben ik héél druk met het schrijven en fotograferen voor Robin Magazine, maar ik heb ook nog wat andere leuke schrijfopdrachten in de pen. Dat maakt van mij een heel blij, maar ook een heel druk persoon.

From the moment my alarm goes off in the morning, I am working on five things at the same time. All great and exciting things. Of course I am busy writing and photographing for Robin Magazine, but I also have some other lovely writing assignments lined up. This makes me a very happy, but busy person.
Even pauze nemen, daar moet ik mezelf altijd echt toe dwingen. Maar om te voorkomen dat ik er om vier uur 's middags ineens achter kom dat ik de lunch compleet vergeten ben, heb ik een methode ontwikkeld. Ik neem elke 4 uur even pauze (ja, net als op kantoor) en dan eet en haak ik wat. Vandaag leverde dat twee grote granny squares voor een goed doel op. Toch nog productief tijdens mijn pauze!
A break, I really have to force myself to take one. Sometimes it happens that I find out at four o'clock in the afternoon that I completely forgot to have lunch. So I needed to come up with a trick to take a break. So every four hours (just like at the office) I take a break, eat something and take up the hook. Today I made these two large granny squares for charity. So even on break I am quite productive!
De logeerpoes zal het allemaal worst wezen. Die vond het vooral heel irritant dat ik vandaag niet lang genoeg stil bleef zitten, zodat ze op schoot kon. Dus zocht ze een lekker plekkie op om een uiltje te knappen. Op mijn favoriete haakplek, dat dan weer wel. Schavuit.
Sleepover cat couldn't care less though. She was mostly very annoyed by the fact that I didn't sit still long enough for her to curl up on my lap. So she found herself a nice spot for a nap. In my crochet spot, that is! Silly beast.
