My week in photos #8 (and a Give Away winner)

Deze week:
- Begon ik aan een nieuw haakproject, eindelijk weer eens een ripple!
- Toen ik in Newcastle was, kon ik het niet laten om even tussen de tijdschriften te neuzen. In Engeland hebben ze zo veel leuke haak- en breitijdschriften. Daar kan ik zo blij van worden. Vaak krijg je er ook nog iets leuks bij, zoals bij Knitting en Crochet. Wat zal ik met die bolletjes eens gaan maken?
- Las ik ook Simply crochet, zo'n heerlijk blad. Bovendien staan er altijd wel patronen in waarvan ik denk: die wil ik weleens maken.
- Blogde ik over mijn ervaringen in een fijn hotel in Boedapest.
- Genoot ik ontzettend van de zomer. Lekker BBQ'en met mijn lief en snijbiet eten die op mijn eigen balkon heeft gegroeid, zo fijn.
- Rouwde ik, net als jullie, om de slachtoffers van MH17. 4 jaar geleden zat ik met met man op dezelfde vlucht. Op weg naar Sydney, via Kuala Lumpur. Met afschuw zag ik hoe de lichamen in open velden lagen en in treinen. Ik was gisteren dan ook opgelucht en geëmotioneerd toen de eerste rouwwagens richting Hilversum gingen, om hopelijk snel terug te zijn bij hun geliefde nabestaanden.

This week I:
- Started  a new crochet project, a lovely ripple. Yay!
- Unwrapped my Knitting & Crochet magazine, which contained some balls of yarn as pressie. Love that. I bought the magazine in Newcastle. In England there are just so many more crochet magazines for sale. I wish we had that in The Netherlands.
- Read Simply Crochet, another great magazine which always has gorgious patterns I wanna make right away.
- Blogged about a fine stay I had in Budapest.
- Enjoyed summer to the max! We BBQ'ed and I cooked dinner with some chard that I gew on my own balcony, isn't that fun?
- Mourned the victims of flight MH17. Four years ago my husband and me were on the same flight, on our way to Sydney via Kuala Lumpur. I was horrified to see what happened to the remains in the fields of Ukraine and was so relieved to welcome the first remains back home yesterday during our national day of mourning. At least here they are safe and everything will be done to get them home to their loved ones so they can find a final resting place.

WIP Wednesday

'Ik regeer wel bij een beetje chaos'. Mensen die mij een beetje kennen, weten dat ik bij deze uitspraak leef. Dat ik het zalig vind om allerlei projecten tegelijkertijd in goede banen te leiden en dat ik er met gemak wat spoedjes tussendoor prak. Een beetje roering in de tent is heerlijk, het zorgt ervoor dat ik niet inkak. Best handig, zo als ondernemer. Want gelukkig valt er een hoop te plannen, maar lang niet alles. Dan is een beetje flexibiliteit wel prettig. Maar af en toe, tijdens een rustig moment, kijk ik zo eens om me heen en grinnik: hm, misschien overdrijf je wel een beetje met al die chaos.

'I rule when there's chaos'. People who know me a little, know that I live by these vey words. I really enjoy taking on several projects, working on them at the same time and making sure the end result of all these projects is perfect. And lastminute work? I can handle that even better. I do love that rush. It makes me feel alive, I guess a rut is the worse thing that could happen to me. The fact that I can handle chaos pretty well, works in my advantage now that I have my own business. 'Cause there's lots of things that can be planned in advance, but there are always these things that jump up at you expecting immediate attention. So it's good to be flexible. But ever now and then I take a moment to look around and grin to myself: okay, maybe I'm taking that whole chaos thing a bit too far.

  
Neem nou de fauteuil in onze woonkamer. Die is meestal het decor van één of ander haakproject waar ik aan bezig ben. Er zit eigenlijk zelden iemand in die stoel, vanwege de stapels wol. Bovenstaande deken in de maak is trouwens weer een heel geval apart (en typisch een gevalletje ultieme chaos), maar daarover later meer... Vanavond komt mijn beste vriendin eten en aangezien het wel zo netjes is om gasten een stoel aan te bieden, zullen de bollen uit de stoel moeten verdwijnen. Dat wordt nog even goochelen. Maar het kan erger...

Now take this arm chair in our livingroom for example. To be honest, hardly anyone ever sits in that chair as there's always yarn in or on it while I work on a crochet project. This blanket by the by, is a perfect example of ultimate chaos. But I'll tell about this odd case in a different post! Tonight my best friend is coming over and since modern etiquette tells us one should offer guests a chair, I guess I have to clean all this up. I'll have to work my magic for that to happen. But it could be even worse...

Want tegen de achterkant van de fauteuil staat nog een tas met wol geparkeerd, met daaruit een granny deken in de maak. Blijkbaar is werken aan één deken tegelijkertijd niet genoeg. Nee, ik moest natuurlijk ook aan een ander project beginnen waar ik zo maar ineens, zonder reden, zin in kreeg. Aan een goede ingeving moet ik dus meteen toegeven. Niet meer te redden, toch?

'Cause there's another bag of yarn and a granny square blanket in progress parked against the back of the arm chair. Apparently, working on one blanket at the time isn't good enough. Noooo, of course I had to give in at the first hunch I got for a new project and start it right away. Seriously, there is no saving me.

Gelukkig valt er nog veel meer te grinniken. Want terwijl ik de voorjaarsbloemen in huis haalde, werd er om mij heen gezucht en gesteund vanwege 'de winter die er nu echt aan komt'. Terwijl het noorden van Amerika en heel Canada zucht en steunt onder enorme sneeuwstormen en ranzig lage temperaturen, krijgen wij de komende twee dagen (ja, twee hele dagen) te maken met temperaturen rond het vriespunt. Ja mensen, de winter valt dit jaar op woensdag en donderdag!  Haal uw husky's maar uit het vet!

Luckily there's a lot more to grin at in my corner of the world. 'Cause while I bought these spring flowers, I listened to the moaning around me 'as winter was now really hitting The Netherlands'. While people in the northern states of the US and the whole of Canada can't get to work because of blizzards and crazy low temperatures, the Dutch are complaining because the next two days (yes, two whole days) it will freeze a few degrees. Yes people, winter will come around on a Wednesday and Thursday this year. Please get your sleddogs from the parking!

WIP Wednesday

En wat doe je als je in je eentje in een hotel in het buitenland zit? Nou ja, jullie in ieder geval lastig vallen met mijn verhalen uit Boedapest. En een beetje haken. Ik had zelf wat bolletjes bij me en kocht een paar extra kleurtjes en een haaknaald in de stad. Dus 's avonds de televisie aan en een patroontje opzetten. Toch wel lekker als je even kunt bijkomen na een dag flink wandelen. Ja, da's stukken minder rock 'n roll dan jullie wellicht dachten hè? Geen enorme zuippartijen, niet tot diep in de nacht dansen... nee, dat komt wel weer als ik thuis ben (ahem).

And what do you do when you're by yourself in a hotelroom abroad? Well, first I bother you guys with all my stories about Budapest. And after that, some crochet. I took some yarn with me and bouhgt some more colors and a hook in Budapest. So at night I just turned on the tv, thought about a pattern and hook, hook, hook. Perfect after a day of long walks. Yeah, I know. It's not really the rock 'n roll like you'd maybe expect from a travel journalist right? No boozing and dancing until the wee hours of the night. Well, I'll do that when I get back home (errh, right). 

En thuis lag nog een héél leuk werkje op me te wachten: een schooltas. Alle stukken had ik al geknipt en gestreken. Nu nog in elkaar zetten.

And back home there's a nice little job waiting for me: making a back-to-school bag. I already cut and ironed all the pices. Now, I just have to assemble the whole thing.

Over een paar dagen kan ik hopelijk het resultaat laten zien. Waar zijn jullie mee bezig?

Blissful Sunday: more ripple crochet

Eigenlijk had ik dit weekend gewoon moeten werken. Er ligt zo veel op me te wachten. Een opdracht van een grote klant, webteksten voor mijn bedrijfswebsite, twee artikelen voor een tijdschrift en ook Robin Magazine 3 dat alweer in de steigers staat. Maar ik kreeg het niet voor elkaar, niet met dit lekkere zomerweer. Ik fietste met mijn lief en ik haakte.

To be honest, I really had to do some work this weekend. So much work is waiting for me. Like a big pile of work from a big client of mine, writing content for my own business website, two features for a magazine and also Robin Magazine 3, which we are already working on. But I just couldn't do it. No while the weather was just so good. I took a look bike ride with the husbear and I crocheted. 

Helemaal geïnspireerd door de zomerse temperaturen en alle vrolijke kleuren die daarbij horen (oké, lief en ik liepen ook nog even het tuincentrum in, plantjes en bloemetjes maken mij blij), dook ik in de katoenvoorraad en viste deze kleuren eruit. Supervrolijk, stoer en zomers.

Totally inspired by the summer temperatures and all the colours that go with summer (alright, to be fair: me and the husband went to the garden center too, I love plants and flowers), I took a dive in my cotton yarn stash and came up with these colours. They are so happy, cool and summery.

Nu zie ik je denken: heb je een paar dagen geleden niet ook al een ripple deken afgemaakt? Is het nu echt nodig om er nog één te maken? Zoals ik in dat bericht al meldde, werkt het haken aan een ripple voor mij als therapie en is het de manier om tot rust te komen. Helemaal perfect dus om even bij te tanken met zo'n drukke week voor de boeg. Nog een paar uurtjes... en dan ga ik er weer tegenaan. Beloofd.

Now I see you think: didn't you finish a ripple blanket exactly like that just a few days ago? Do you really need to make another one? Well, like I told you a few days ago, crocheting a ripple blanket is like therapy for me. The best way to relax. It's just perfect to regain some energy before I start yet again a very busy week. Just a few more hours of this... and then I'll start working again with full energy, promise.

Colourful Friday: crochet WIP

Terwijl mijn enorme granny deken nog steeds op me ligt te wachten, besloot ik toch aan een nieuw haakproject te beginnen. Ik bedoel: alleen maar granny squares haken, daar krijg je op een gegeven moment ook vierkante oogjes van. Lange halen snel thuis: dat was even de nieuwe missie.

Whilst my large granny square blanket is still waiting for me, I decided to start a new crochet project anyway. I mean, crocheting a couple of hundred of granny squares... I got a bit tired of it. So I wanted a quick and dirty crochet project that wouldn't bore me so fast. That's my new mission.

En zo'n ripple stitch, die raak ik niet snel beu. Dat haakt lekker door en je kunt het zo heerlijk gedachteloos doen. Geweldige ontspanning vind ik dat. Ik maakte al eerder een dekentje in deze steek, dus het werd tijd om het nog eens uit te proberen. Als je de eerste tour eenmaal hebt gehaakt, gaat de rest vanzelf.

And I don't get bored with the ripple stitch so soon. It's a great stitch for a fast project, I absolutely loved it 'cause I can crochet it without thinking about it too much. Great relaxation if you ask me.  have made a blanket before, using this stitch. So it was about time for another one. Once you're done with the first round, the rest is just so easy.

Ik ben ook even uitgebreid in mijn voorraad katoen gedoken en kwam met deze kleurencombinatie op de proppen. Het heeft een geweldige retro uitstraling dacht ik zo. Ik vind vooral petrol blauw ontzettend mooi. Maar door dat oranje en paars kun je zo terug naar de 60s toch?

I took this project as an excuse to dive into my cotton stash and came up with this colour combo. I really like it, so retro isn't it? I really love petrol blue as a colour. But the purple and orange makes you feel like you're back is the 60s. 

En hoe kwam ik nu zo op deze kleurencombinatie? Nou ja, zoals ik weleens roep: ideeën kun je overal op doen. Creativiteit ligt gewoon op straat. Of in dit geval: gewoon in mijn eigen woonkamer, zoals dit gezellige tafereeltje op mijn salontafel.

And how did I came up with my colour combo? Well, as I always say: you can get inspired everwhere. Creativity is right in front of us every day. And in this case: right in front of me on my living room table.

En nee, geen flauw idee waarom ik helemaal 'into' oranje ben. Ik heb niets met het koningshuis en ook de op hande zijnde troonswisseling bekijk ik puur vanuit een geschiedkundig perspectief. Maar toch, het is weer eens wat stoerder dan roze of paars, toch? In ieder geval: prettig weekend! Nog leuke plannen?

And no, I have no idea why I am 'into' orange all of a sudden. It has nothing to to with the fact that orange is the national Dutch colour, 'cause I am not a big rooter for the Dutch royals and the coronation that is coming up at the end of the month, well I am only interested in the historical sense I have to say. But I guess orange is just a very cool colour, much bolder than pink or purple. But anyway... I wish you all a great weekend. Got any nice plans?

A little sad

Eigenlijk heel dubbel. Want natuurlijk maak ik tassen, dekens en kussens voor in mijn Etsy shop in de hoop dat mensen ze leuk vinden en kopen. Dus ik was ook superblij toen deze deken gisteren werd verkocht. Maar dit is, zonder twijfel, mijn favoriete gehaakte deken. En dan is het toch stiekem een beetje jammer dat hij op de post moet.

It's a double feeling, really. I mean, I make bags, blankets and pillows for my Etsy shop to sell them and I always hope that people will like my things just as much as I do. So I was really happy to find out this blanket was sold! Thoug this is, without any doubt, my favorite crochet blanket. So, it's also a little sad to see it going.

En ver weg dat hij gaat! Deze deken gaat helemaal naar Nieuw Zeeland. Wat een geweldig idee, dat deze deken straks in een kamer aan het andere eind van de wereld zal liggen. Dat is toch wel het allerleukste van het hebben van een Etsy winkel.

And it's going quite far! This blanket is going all the way to New Zealand. It's so fabulous to know that someone has one of my blankets in their house, on the other side of the world. I think that's the best part about having an Etsy shop at all.

Ja, deze deken met golfjes ga ik wel echt missen! Hij is namelijk gemaakt van fantastisch garen. 100% biologisch katoen van Lana Grossa. En zácht dat dat is en een schitterende structuur. Ik heb er met zo ontzettend veel plezier aan gehaakt. En ik weet ook dat iemand aan de andere kant van de wereld er straks met plezier overheen zal aaien en onder zal liggen.

Yes, I'll definately miss this ripple stitch blanket. It's made from 100% organic cotton by Lana Grossa and I cannot start to describe how soft and wonderul the structure is. I just loved crocheting it. And I just know that someone on the other side of the world is going to love laying under it.

Onze logeerpoes denkt trouwens dat een beetje naaien mij wel zal opvrolijken. Zij heeft in ieder geval héél veel lol op de doos van mijn naaimachine. Serieus, in mijn volgende leven kom ik terug als poes. Kan ik ook de hele dag een beetje op of in dozen kruipen en op de verwarming knipogen. Wat een leven!

The cat that's currently staying with is thinks a bit of sewing will cheer me up. Well, at least she's having tons of fun on the sewing machine box! And seriously, in my next life I am coming back as a cat, so I can just jump in and on boxes and wink at people from across a warm radiator. That's the life people!
