A creative travel guide to Groningen (The Netherlands)

Groningen: a creative travel guide | Happy in Red

The Netherlands are just a small country and those of you in Australia, USA or Canada will laugh at me for sighing over traveling to a city for 2 hours and calling it a 'long trip', but that's what a trip from Utrecht to Groningen feels like. The city of Groningen is situated in the north of The Netherlands and this part of the country is quite different from the rest. More quiet and calm. But since the David Bowie is... exhibit was hosted in Groningen I gladly travelled there. And it was a good excuse to explore Groningen as it's a bustling student city with great shops, good restaurants and... yarn.

A lovely weekend in Leeuwarden

When it comes to traveling, it's often my husband who is lucky. 'Cause sometimes when I travel for work, he gets to come. But now I was the lucky one. My husband had business in the north of The Netherlands, in Frysia. So we decided to stay for the weekend in Leeuwarden, the capital of this particular province.

A hidden gem in Germany: Osnabrück

A hidden gem in Germany: Osnabrück | Happy in Red

My work has its advantages. Because I get to travel for work I sometimes go places where I wouldn't think of to go myself. I was asked to check out Osnabrück in Germany. Yes, Osnabrück. I hadn't heard from it either. I once passed the city on my way to Hamburg, but that's it. So I was in for a lovely surprise as Osnabrück turned out to be quite a creative and beautiful small German city.

Let me be your travel guide (and please be mine)

Traveling and writing for works has so many advantages. You get to see the most beautiful places in earth (and your boss is paying for it), stay in really nice hotels and meets loads of lovely locals along the way who show you all the hidden gems. But it's work afterall: so no sleeping in and having long lush breakfasts and wandering around at an easy pace. Nope, the scedule is completely full from early morning till late at night, which means soar feet (like in Budapest). And another disadvantage is that you'll come back with your notebook completely filled with hints, tips and tricks (all of whch can't be found in travel guides!) and then your editor says: 'oh, we don't have so much space, could you shorten your article with one page?' But these hints and tips are just itching to be shared! I think that if I wouldn't share them I would get a rash or something.

Las Vegas naar San Francisco

Las Vegas naar San Francisco
Las Vegas naar San Francisco

My trip from Las Vegas to San Francisco
Where I discovered that West-USA has gorgeous national parks, crazy hippie towns and really great Tex-Mex food, Las Vegas is like Disney World for grown-ups and ate the best Chinese food in my life in China Town in San Francisco.

After every trip, for work and during my own vacations abroad, I would collect new hints and tips. And then they would just lay there, doing nothing. I couldn't stand it! So many business cards, from cute, hidden from the crowds restaurants, or flyers from funky crafters markets, or the adress of a B&B that was much better (and cheaper) than any hotel I had ever been to and notebooks filled with what you could do for free in so many cities around the woirld. I just had to do something about that. And that's how my travel blog Mooistestedentrips.nl was born.

New York

On my own in New York where I discovered that the best things are for free. Like walks across the Brooklyn Bridge, a ferry ride to Staten Island (so you can see the statue of Liberty from up close), strolling through Central Park and many, many museums.

Now, at first the website was just a big dump for all my hints and trips. And that was all fun and all. But lately, I wanted more. Through this blog I've discovered how great it is to interact with your visitors (your comments and tips are priceless!) and I guess I also wanted that for my travel website. So when I had to make some changes to my website last year, I decided to think big. I picked a whole new design ánd attached a blog too.

Cuba

Cuba

Cuba

Cuba

In Cuba (Havana) where the people have nothing but went out of their way to make us as comfortable as possible. Where I discovered pristine jungle, wonderful revolutionary murals dating back to the '50s and where I ate street food without getting a tummy bug.

Now, I am a web editor but rebuilding an entire website and making sure it all looks a little nice, that's really a bridge too far. So I contacted this talented web dude who helped me to build a gorgeous and grown-up website in a couple of months. I am so happy with it. On the one ha,nd there's tips you can find for the many cities that I've visited (and yes, the tips from all those notebooks are there) and a blog where I can just chat away about what I've been seeing and where I can post some more pics. And now there's the possibility to comment too! Easy does it. I guess if you'd like to follow, you should do so via Google Chrome and translate the website in whatever language you'd prefer to read.

Morocco

Morocco

One of my latest journeys to Morocco, maybe one of the most beautiul countries I've ever visited. It has everything a country need: beautiful cities like Marrakech and Fez, deserts, Kasbahs, camels, great food, and lovely small sea towns.

And to lead my blog to proper adulthood (yes, this whole process has been like some sort of ritual), the blog can now also be followed through Bloglovin', 'cause I think that's probably the easiest way of following. So if you feel like dropping by and sharing some advice or two, please do.

A day in Zürich

What do most people do the day they're checking out and leaving? The wake up in time, shower and have a relaxed breakfast. Then they collect their things and go to the airport where they read a book, buy some Toblerone and have lunch. But not us. No, on our last day we just had to squeeze in a visit to Zürich. We were pretty convinced we could do that.

So we packed all our stuff the night before, put our alarm clocks way too early and after a quick coffee and some yoghurt we jumped on a very early train to Zürich (the same train that goes by the airport, ahem), where we put our large bags in a locker and headed for the city centre, very relaxed.

Now see, I loved that we are flexible enough to undertake these kind of mini-trips as I absolutely adored the stroll we had past the river and throught the old part of town. A friend warned me that 'Zürich is the place people go to to kill themselves', but I have to say that I found Zürich to be anything but depressing. The old part of the city is scattered with cute small boutiques and restaurants. And we spotted hostels, backpackers and pubs too! The latter is often a good sign, it means the city has a certain 'must see' factor to it. Also backpackers mean: cheap beers. And that's a good thing in Zürich as it's quite an expensive place. For lunch (two sandwiches, a bottle of water and a coke) we paid €30. Jeez! So welcome backpackpubs!

And tucked in between the flagstores of Bulgari, Chanel and Prada I found a department store with an entire floor containing yarn, fabrics, sewing machines and lots of other DIY things. It was lovely browsing through all of that but (after that lunch!) I didn't allow myself to buy anything. Oh and by the way, after our short introduction of Zürich it took us 10 minutes to get to the airport where we read a book, bought Toblerone and had lunch...

Magical Marrakech

We handed in the rental car and after the nice gentleman of the rental service had dropped us off at the hotel, we were finally there: Marrakech! Such a difference after all those days of mountains and deserts. Marrakech, the last of the Imperial Cities to visit, though luckily not the last visit off out vacation just yet! We needed some time to get used to the city again (all those people, all those smells!) but not long after we arrived we were ready to hit Marrakech!

Marrakech is a lot more touristy than the other Imperial cities. Now, if you'd asked me in advance I would've said that more touristy is often not better. But for Marrakech I have to say that it's quite nice that there are more tourists about, 'cause we don't get hassled as much and we didn't get stared at (and when you're as tall as we are, lots of stared is what you get in Morocco). The Medina is easy enough to get around in. There are lots of roof terraced bars to have lunch or a drink and the shopping is nice and easy. Remember though: once you start negotiating, you're expected to take something home with you.

In the Medina I visited this great initiative: Al Kawtar, a workshop and store where you can buy linens, towels and fabulous dresses and tunics, all handembroidered and crocheted. These things are made by disabled locals girls and women and all the profits go directly to them and to and education system. All the women are happily working in the courtyard and greated us enthusiastically. I looked around for a long time, but finally picked a hand embroidered beach towel and a shoebag. And the husbear also came in handy as he helped a woman in a wheel chair put some stock on the high shelves.

Marrakech has some fantastic old palices, museums and toombs all with fantastic gardens, courtyards and fountains. And a cute detail is that on top of those storks build their nests! The clapping noise they make is so special to hear in the big city.

Les Jardines Marjorelle are a bit from th city centre, but so worth a visit. They belonged to Yves Saint Laurent for decades and the gardens are an oasis in the city, full with special palmtrees and flowers. There's also a museum with rare Berber artefacts, jewellery and clothes. And until this day, since Yves hasn't been with us for quite some time now, the gardens keep inspiring artists.

Budapest: it's all about food and wine

Werk is werk!

The last few days you've seen some really nice food in Budapest, but I can tell you: there is so much more to explore in Budapest and the rest of Hungary. The kitchen is a little unknown and maybe even a little unappreciated. But I can tell  you, it's fabulous and I wanted to know more. I found Taste Hungary on the internet and met up with the owner Carolyn for an interview on Friday. Okay, we also did some wine tasting, but it was work. I promise! And to my absolute joy she told me I could go on one of her culinary tours through Budapest to learn all about Hungarian cuisine and taste all the goodies as well.

Taste Hungary - Budapest

The Hungarian kitchen is honest and comfortable, I'd say. Nice stews and casseroles, beef, lot's of peppers (sweet and hot) and big chunks of soft bread. Absolute comfort food. But there are very refined dishes to be found as well, especially when you look at the sweets. Really great cakes, pies, desserts and chocolates.

The Big Market Hall is not to be missed when you're in Budapest. A lot of locals get their groceries there, but when you're a visitor there's also lots to see and do. We spent about 1,5 hrs there but could've spent hours longer, easily. We tasted lots of different sausages, bread and sweets. And we gasped seeing the stalls and stalls filled with fresh seasonal fruits and veggies, cheeses, meats and nuts. All lovely. And then there were the peppers, paprikas and.... pickles. A whole aisle with nothing else but pickled veggies! A Hungarian speciality. There's even picked baby-watermelon! My vote goes to pickled cucumber and cabbage. The rest, no thank you.

One of the most special stores we visited was Rózsavölgyi csokoládé, a small but gorgeous chocolate shop owned by a husband and wife. They were both in the graphics industry but fell head over heels with chocolate making. They make fantastic chocolates with local ingredients and they've personally visited the cocoa plantations to make sure all was going fair and well there. And the owner has designed all the lovely boxes and wrappings herself! I'm really considering ordering some sweets online, that's how good those chocolates were.

Taste Hungary Budapest

Another really special shop is Cukorka, a sweets shop where the sweets are right in front of you by some really enthusiastic girls. Really tiny sweets with pictures of Budapest sights on them, originals flavours and gorgeous lollypops. The sweets are wrapped in gorgeous wrappers and bottles. You can also pick your own sweets.

Taste Hungary - Budapest

Taste Hungary - Budapest

Our guide Judit took us, last but not least (after I tasted lavender-lemon ice cream!) to a lovely wine bar where we tasted some really good Hungarian wines: Borbíróság. We had some really good whites from the Tokaji area and lucky for me I ran into those same wines at the airport later on te day, so I could take them home and enjoy them with my husband.
