Creative travel guide to Heidelberg

Inmiddels heb ik echt al een belachelijke hoeveelheid Duitse steden bezocht. Maar eentje stond nog op mijn lijstje: Heidelberg. De stad van de liefde, de stad die niet werd gebombardeerd tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog, de stad van het beroemde kasteel. En hopelijk ook de stad van leuke creatieve adresjes. Ik ging op onderzoek uit.

There aren't many cities in Germany that I haven't visited the last couple of years. One was still on my wishlist: Heidelberg. The city of love, the city that wasn't bombed to bits during the second World War, the city with the famous castle. And the city of many creative hotspots? That's what I was trying to find out.

Visiting Covilhã: the wool capital of Portugal

Eerlijk: ik had geen idee. Nietsvermoedend ging ik mee op een persreis door midden Portugal, op zoek naar verborgen steden en bijzondere street art. Helemaal mijn ding. Totdat ik in het programma las dat we de laatste dag de wol-hoofdstad van Portugal zouden bezoeken, Covilhã. En zelfs in de naam van het hotel waar we verbleven, zat 'iets' met wol. Er gingen kleine alarmbelletjes af, maar ik wachtte rustig af. Ik werd verbaasd, en hoe.

Honestly, I had no idea about this place. None at all. I was n a press trip through the centre of Portugal, looking for undiscovered cities and cutting edge street art, right up my alley. Then I turn to the program and see that on the last day we're visiting the wool-capital of Portugal, Covilhã, and even our hotel had something something wool in the name. Small alarm bells started ringing, but I sat and waited. It was an amazing surprise, I can say that.

Dat je van huis uit Brabantse bent, maar Den Bosch eigenlijk niet zo goed kent. Ik kan dat, dus. Maar ik moest voor mijn werk een paar dagen in Den Bosch zijn, en kon het zo een beetje goed maken en de stad uitgebreid verkennen. I was born and raised in the Dutch Brabant province, yet I really hardly knew provincial capital city Den Bosch all that well. Silly me. Lucky for me, I had to go there for work for a couple of days and I was able to really get to know the place. And of course, I couldn't resist looking up the most creative hotspots while I was there. So read along, please!

Creative travel guide to Namur, Belgium

Eerlijk is eerlijk, het Franstalige deel van België ken ik niet zo goed. Ik ben toch een meisje van 'bijna op de Vlaamse grens', dus je vindt me eerder in Antwerpen of Gent, dan in de Ardennen. Zonde eigenlijk, want een paar jaar terug had ik het reuze naar mijn zin in Luik. Dus toen ik een paar weken terug de kans kreeg om, met een paar mede reis-schrijvers, richting de hoofdstad van Wallonië te gaan, was ik meteen benieuwd. En ja, in mijn vrije uurtjes ging ik in Namen natuurlijk ook op zoek naar de creatieve adresjes!

Just to be fair, I am not too familiar with the French-speaking part of Belgium. Since I grew up a few kilometres from the border to the Flanders, I am a little biased and prefer Ghent and Antwerp to, for example, the Ardennes. Shame on me! Especially since I really enjoyed myself in Liège a few years ago. So when the opportunity presented itself to visit the capital of Wallony, I just jumped at it. So when I was in Namur, I also spent some free time looking up yarn and creative shops, as I do. I hope you'll enjoy my Creative Travel Guide to Namur, Belgium.

Creative travel guide: Mechelen, Belgium

Het reisseizoen is weer losgebarsten. Bij mij althans. Maar misschien zijn jullie ook alweer leuke tripjes aan het plannen? Of een leuke zomervakantie? Ik mocht voor mijn werk op reis naar Mechelen in België en mijn man mocht mee. Gezellig vind ik dat altijd, hij is echt mijn favoriete reisgenoot. Maar tijdens het bekijken van alle bezienswaardigheden, kon ik het natuurlijk niet laten om ook weer wat creatieve winkels binnen te lopen, en die deel ik natuurlijk graag.

Travel season has started! Or it has with me. But maybe you are planning some fun trips? Or your summer vacation for the entire family? Work took me to Mechelen, Belgium and (lucky me) I was allowed to bring my husband. I always love it when he comes along, him being my favourite travel companion and all. And while looking at all the pretty sights of Mechelen, I couldn't help but check out some creative hotspots as well. So here they are.

Middelburg: creative travel guide

Grappig, een paar weken geleden werd ik door een toeristsiche organisatie getagged op Instagram: er was een persreis in Middelburg en ik zat tussen de journalisten (zoals ik dat nog weleens doe). Een oplettende lezer, riep meteen: hé, is dat niet Esther van Happy in Red? En jawel, ik was het. Zo grappig! Ik ontdekte op uitnodiging van de Gemeente Middelburg de kunst en cultuur van de stad en ik moet zeggen: ik was echt heel erg onder de indruk. Kijk je met me mee?

It's funny, a few weeks ago a tourist organisation tagged me on Instagram, being one of the journalists on a press trip in their city. For me, this is getting pretty normal, hanging out with the jouranlists. But an attentive reader immediately replied saying: hey, is that Esther of Happy in Red? Ha, well indeed it was me. Isn't it funny how things collide like that? The city of Middelburg (capital of the Zeeland province in The Netherlands) invited me over for a weekend an check out arts and culture. And man, was I impressed. Wanna take a look?

A visit to a lovely yarn shop in dreamy Schoonhoven

Omdat ik iets leuks mocht bijdragen aan de Goodiebag van Leonie van Wolcafé, tijdens de launch van haar boek Kabels haken, toog ik op een bewolkte vrijdagmiddag naar Schoonhoven. Hier is Leonies mooie wolwinkel gevestigd en ik bedacht me dat ik nog nooit een stap in Schoonhoven had gezet, ondanks dat het eigenlijk zo dichtbij is. Een goed excuus dus.

When I was asked to contribute to the goodiebag of Leonie of Wolcafé for the launch of her new book, I decided to jump in my car and head to Schoonhoven for an afternoon and check out her shop. Schoohoven is a lovely ancient town in the center of the Netherlands, surrounded by water and old city walls. It's not that far from Utrecht, yet I had never been there properly. Time to check it out.

Kunnen jullie het geloven: ik was nog nooit echt in Delft geweest. Ja, ooit eens met school en naar een studentenfeest met een verdwaald vriendje. Meet echt in de stad, nee. Supersuf, dus besloot ik op een zonnige zaterdag met een vriendin de trein te pakken voor een dagje Delft. En dat werd een kleurrijke bedoening.

Can you believe I never visited Delft? Yes, once on a school trip and to a rave with a vague ex-boyfriend, but visiting Delft as a proper tourist, nope I hadn't. Time to change that. So, one sunny Saturday afternoon I took the trein to Delft for a sunny and coloutful daytrip.

Als er toch één voordeel is van het voor mijzelf beginnen, een paar jaar terug inmiddels, is dat ik zo veel nieuwe mensen ontmoet. Toen ik nog op kantoor zat, bewoog ik me toch in een relatief klein kringetje van dezelfde mensen. Maar nu leer ik elke week wel nieuwe, leuke mensen kennen. Geweldig. En één van de aardige en leuke mensen die ik een tijd geleden ontmoetten zei tegen me: kom nou eens naar Deventer, dat is zo leuk en dat zal ik je rondleiden. Kijk, zo'n kans laat ik niet lopen.

If there's one big advantage of having my own business, it's the fact that I get to meet so many new people. When I was still working in an offive fulltime the circle of people I knew was relatively small, but now theres new people every week. I love that. And one of the new people I met last year said; why don't you come to my town, Deventer, it's so pretty and I'd love to show you around. I could hardly pass on the opportunity.

Een weekendje Groningen bleek nog een hele wereldreis te zijn, maar voor de tentoonstelling David Bowie is... had ik het zeker over. Bovendien was het meteen een goed excuus om Groningen eens te leren kennen, want ik was nog nooit in deze mooie stad geweest. En wat een leuke stad is Groningen. Geweldige winkels, leuke cafés, super goede restaurants en... wol!

The Netherlands are just a small country and those of you in Australia, USA or Canada will laugh at me for sighing over traveling to a city for 2 hours and calling it a 'long trip', but that's what a trip from Utrecht to Groningen feels like. The city of Groningen is situated in the north of The Netherlands and this part of the country is quite different from the rest. More quiet and calm. But since the David Bowie is... exhibit was hosted in Groningen I gladly travelled there. And it was a good excuse to explore Groningen as it's a bustling student city with great shops, good restaurants and... yarn.

Als je mij op Facebook of Instagram volgt (psst, mocht je daar zin in hebben... hier rechts staan de icoontjes om te volgen), weet dat ik vorige week ik Brugge was. Voor het werk. Ja, iemand moet het doen. Het was lang geleden dat ik in Brugge was, ik had zelfs alleen nog maar foto's die met een rolletje geschoten waren. Ofwel: ik moest massa's nieuwe foto's maken, leuke hotspots opzoeken en natuurlijk, speciaal voor jullie, ook de leukste creatieve adresjes bezoeken. Lees je mee?

A creative guide to Rotterdam

Ken je dat verhaal van die twee vriendinnen die naar Rotterdam zouden gaan? Nou ze gingen niet. Dat gold een beetje voor mij. Want afgelopen week had ik een uitje gepland naar Rotterdam, met een vriendin uit Duitsland. Helaas werd vriendin geveld door ziekte, maar ik had alles al uitgestippeld. Dus besloot ik om toch maar te gaan en dat mondde uit in een ware speurtocht door Rotterdam, waarbij ik allerlei leuke hotspots en adresjes tegenkwam.

Have you ever planned a trip with a friend and then the friend couldn't make it? Well, that was me. I planned a trip to Rotterdam with a friend of mine who lives in Germany, only she cancelled because se was ill. But I had already planned things, so I decided to go to Rotterdam anyway and seek out all the creative and fun hotspots I could find. And I happened to have a great time in Rotterdam!

A creative (christmas!) guide to Hannover

Ik moet het de Duitsers toch nageven: wat kunnen ze toch leuke kerstmarkten organiseren. Ik was vorig jaar in Keulen en het jaar ervoor in Konstanz. En dit jaar ging ik voor mijn werk naar Hannover. Natuurlijk leuke hotspots zoeken, maar ook naar de kerstmarkten! En ik liep écht totaal per ongeluk tegen een aantal heel leuke wolwinkels aan... goede combi dacht ik zo!

I really have to say: the Germans know how to do a proper Christmas market. I LOVE Christmas markets in Germany. There, it's out in the open. Last year I visited Cologne, the year before that Constance and now it was time to visit Hannover for work, of course, to check out the Christmas markets and all the nice highlights. But I just happened to stumble across some pretty nice yarn shops too. Sounds like an amazing combo, or so I think.

Creative guide to Berlin

Wie mij op Facebook volgt, had waarschijnlijk al gezien dat ik de afgelopen week in de Berlijn was. Voor een héél klein beetje werk, maar vooral lekker veel vakantie vieren. En mijn lief was mee, dus dat was nog eens extra gezellig. Hij weet inmiddels hoe ik in elkaar steek, dus als we eens een stoffenzaak zagen of een mooie wolwinkel, dan werd ik er op gewezen en dan wachtte hij braaf even buiten. Haha! Maar daardoor kan ik nu wel een mooi overzichtje geven van heel veel creatieve winkels en markten in Berlijn.

If you're following me on Facebook, you probably saw that I spent the whole of last week in Berlin. A little bit for work, but most of it was a well deserved vacation. And the husbear went with me, which I loved very much. He knows me by now, so everytime we passed a yarn or fabric shop he'd point it out and would wait patiently until I was done browsing. How's that for love! So thanx to him I can give you a fabulous creative guide to Berlin.

Berlin Mitte & Prenzlauerberg

Om maar gelijk met het centrum van Berlijn te beginnen, Berlin Mitte. In deze wijk vind je natuurlijk Brandenburger Tor, de Dom en Reichstag, maar ook een paar bijzondere creatieve winkels.

• Knit knit, in de Linienstraße. Helaas met beperkte openingstijden, maar wel met een bijzondere collectie. Je hebt de beste kans deze zaak open te treffen op zaterdag.
• Yarn en coffee. Ja, je hoort het goed. Koffie leuten en wol shoppen, dat is toch een topcombinatie! Hebben we dat trouwens in Nederland ook? 
• In Prenzlauerberg vind je Skull 'n Crosspins waar je stof, wol én cosmetica kunt kopen. Ook al zo'n fijne combinatie en een heel mooie winkel.

Let's start with the centre of Berlin, Mitte. In this 'hood you will find all the grand sights of Berlin, like the Brandenburger Tor, Dom and Reichstag, and some pretty fabulous creative stores.

• Knit knit in the Linienstraße has limited opening hours (Saturdays are your best shot), but they have a great collection of yarns and the store is pretty.
• Yarn and coffee. Oh how I wish we would have a store in The Netherlands that's both a coffee place and a yarn store, I think I'd never leave.
• In Prenzlauerberg Skull 'n Crosspins sells yarn, fabrics ánd cosmetics. Hide your credicards!

Berlin Kreuzberg

Berlijn Kreuzberg is misschien wel de meest creatieve wijk in Berlijn, in ieder geval voor de haaksters en naaisters onder ons. Ik viel van de ene wolwinkel in de andere stoffenwinkel en ontdekte op zaterdag ook een heleboel markten waar stoffen en wol werd verkocht. Dus op zaterdag: op naar Kreuzberg.

• Wollparadies. Misschien wel de leukste wolwinkel die ik in Berlijn heb gezien. Niet alleen bekende wolmerken, maar ook bijzondere hand geverfde Marokkaanse wol. 
• 1000stoff, een mooie stoffenwinkel met een vriendelijke eigenaresse. Er worden hier regelmatig workshops gegeven, dus sta er niet van te kijken als het in de winkel wemelt van de ijverige (jonge) naaisters in de dop.
• Offstoff, nog zo'n mooie stoffenwinkel die je niet mag missen! Veel mooie katoentjes, ook biokatoen.
• Maybachufer markt. Omdat er zo veel eettentjes staan met lekker Turks eten, wordt dit ook wel de Turkse markt genoemd. Maar op deze markt vind je ook massa's stoffenkramen en kramen met handgemaakte spulletjes. Eén van de leukste markten die ik heb gezien in Berlijn.

Berlin Kreuzberg has to be one of the most creative neighborhoods of Berlin, for sure. I saw so many lovely shops and markets. Visit Kreuzberg on Saturday, you won't be dissapointed.

• Wollparadies has the standard European yarns, but also some pretty awesome hand dyed Moriccan yarns.
• 1000stoff is such a cute neighborhood shop, with a friendly owner. Beautiful fabrics and since workshops are regularly organised here you'll see some enthusiastic seamstresses-to-be running around. 
• Offstoff is a very stylish fabric shop, that you'll just have to visit. Beautiful fabrics, dyes and patterns. 
• Because of all the ethnic food stalls the Maybachufer Market is often called the Turkish Market, but you'll also find a decent number of fabric stalls and stalls with handmade items. I absolutely loved this market.

Friedrichshain

Friedrichshain is één van de hipste buurten van Berlijn op dit moment en op zondag is dit de perfecte plek om naar de vlooienmarkt op de Boxhagenerplatz te gaan en vervolgens handgemaakte items, tweedehands kleding en lekkere hapjes te scoren bij Neue Heimat. Wil je wol shoppen, dan zul je er van dinsdag tot en met zaterdag naartoe moeten. Leuke winkel is Knit Happens, waar de eigenaren al net zo gek zijn als de buurt zelf. Er worden regelmatig leuke bijeenkomsten georganiseerd (en ik zag zojuist dat ze één van mijn foto's hadden gedeeld op Facebook, van mijn bobble stitch sjaal).

Friedrichshain is one of the hippest neighborhoods of Berlin. And Sunday is the perfect day for a strool around the flea market on Boxhagener Platz. After that a visit to Neue Heimat is in order where you can buy handmade items, second hand clothes and streetfood. If you would like to go yarn shopping, you should go to the neighborhood on Tuesdays to Saturdays, that's when Knit Happens opens. A shop that seems as crazy as the neighborhood that often organises fun knit events. And I just discovered they shared a picture of my bobble stitch scarf on their Facebook page.

Idee at KaDeWe

KaDeWe is natuurlijk wereldberoemd, als hét sjieke warenhuis toen Oost en West Berlijn nog van elkaar waren gescheiden. Sjiek is het warenhuis nog steeds. Nu moet ik zeggen dat ik niet zo van de warenhuizen ben. Ik kan niet zo veel met parfums en lippenstiften van €150, maar toen ik las dat KaDeWe ook een eigen creatief warenhuis heeft, moest ik toch even langs. Idee zit niet ín KaDeWe, zoals ik dacht, maar ertegenover aan de Passauser Straße. 

En oh, wat een geweldige winkel! Neem trouwens een extra creditcard mee, want de stoffen en wol is danig aan de prijs. Toch zijn er ook leuke koopjes te vinden, zoals stofpakketjes en wol van het eigen merk (katoen, sokkenwol en merino), toch een leuk souvenir. Overigens was het ten strengste verboden om foto's te maken in deze winkel, dus deze foto's werden genomen met mijn telefoon stiekem onder de oksel. Ik ben benieuwd of ik nu alsnog een boete krijg!

KaDeWe is the most famous department store of Berlin. Back when the city was devided by the wall it was basically the only posh store to be found in West Berlin and a bit of a 'up yours' to the communists across the border. KaDeWe is still very posh today, though I have to say I am not too interested in department stores. I just don't give a hoot about €150 perfumes and lipsticks. But when I heard KaDeWe has a creative department, I just had to check it out. 

Idee is not actually inside KaDeWe, so I found out. But across the street at Passauerstraße. It's is such a fabulous shop with a fantstic collection, albeit not a very cheap collection. There are fine silks and beautiful yarns, but they come at a cost. Bring an extra creditcard! Though there are some fun offers, like fabric kits and the home yarn brand (cotton, sock yarn and merino), maybe a nice souvenir to take back home? It was strictly forbidden to take pictures btw, so I took these pics with my phone pretty much IN my arm pit. I hope they won't track me down and fine me!

Some practical advice

• Veel creatieve winkels zijn gesloten op zondag en maandag. Eigenlijk net zoals in Nederland. Zijn dat nét de dagen dat je in Berlijn bent, dan kun je in ieder geval naar Idee, want die winkel is gewoon open. Ook andere warenhuizen zoals Karstadt hebben een creatieve afdeling vol wol en stof, vaak nog goed te betalen ook.
• Onlangs interviewde ik Marjolein van Berlijn-Blog over haar wijkje Friedrichshain, zij deelt met mij haar favoriete hotspots in de wijk. Zij bracht ook onlangs haar eerste boek uit: Mijn Berlijn met leuke insider tips, maar ook bijzondere verhalen over de bewogen geschiedenis van Berlijn. 
• Andere leuke hippe café en creatieve winkels vind je in het boek Berlijn in Stijl, wat trouwens lekker plaatjes kijken is. 
• Ik zette al mijn tips over Berlijn (de niet-creatieve dan!) in mijn overzichtelijke CityGuide Berlijn.
   
• A lot of creative shops are closed on Sundays and Mondays. If you're in Berlin on these days you're a little out of luck, but you can still visit Idee on Mondays and other department stores like Karstadt, as other department stores also have a department for yarn and fabrics.
• I collected a lot of other cool placed on my Pinterest board about Berlin.

Back from (crafty) Koblenz

En jullie maar denken dat ik keihard zat te werken afgelopen week. Nou, dat was ook zo. Maar afgelopen week werkte ik in Koblenz. Dat is wel fijn van het werken als freelancer: je zet je laptop weg, zoekt aansluiting met internet en je hebt een kantoor. En mijn 'kantoor' stond deze week in de huiskamer van een vriendin in Kloblenz.

I had you fooled this week, right? Thinking I was working so hard. Well, I was actually. Just last week I was working from Koblenz, Germany. That's the greatest thing from being a freelancer. You just set up your laptop somewhere, connect to the internet and you have yourself an office. And last week my office was at the house of a friend of mine who lives in Koblenz.

Wat kan ik jullie inmiddels allemaal over Koblenz vertellen? In ieder geval dat het een heel leuk stadje is dat tussen de rivieren Moezel en Rijn ingeklemd ligt met allemaal dramatisch oprijzende forten en kastelen op grote rotsen. Dat er tientallen gezellige pleintjes zijn met leuke cafés. Dat je er prima kunt winkelen (ook overdekt, wat met de kou wel een aanrader was). En dat er ontzettend veel leuke handwerkwinkels zijn!

What can I tell you guys about Koblenz, Germany? Well, I can tell you that it's a very cute town between the rivers Mosel and Rhyn and that it's surrounded by dramatic hilltops with castles and fortresses. That there are loads of lovely squares with cosy cafés. That it's a great place to go shopping (also inside some shopping malls, which was great as it was very cold). And that there are so many fantastic craft stores.

Zo was er een keur aan hele leuke wolwinkels. Bovenstaande heet 'Wollparadies' (ja, hoe toepasselijk) en heeft werkelijk alle garens van Lana Grossa. Dat is een van mijn favoriete wolmerken, omdat ze ontzettend fijne merino wol hebben (Bingo) een een schitterende lijn biologisch katoen. Ik was dus totaal in de wolken toen ik zag dat ze nog een restant Linea Pura Latte hadden. Dat is mijn favoriete biologische katoen, maar helaas stopt de fabrikant ermee. Dus als ik de hand kan leggen op wat laatste bolletjes, dan laat ik die kans niet aan me voorbij gaan!

There were so many great yarn shops. This one is called 'Wollparadies' (wool paradise, what a great name) and the store had all yarns by Lana Grossa. That's one of my favorite yarn barnds as they have a great selection of merino wool (Bingo) and a great range of organic cottons. So I went completely mad with joy when I found out they had some last balls of Linea Pura Latte. That's probably my favorite organic yarn, ever. Unfortunately the manufacturer is quitting this line, so if I get the opportunity to put my mitts on some last balls of this gorgious yarn I won't let it pass.

Ook bij Wolle Rödel kun je gemakkelijk een halfuur binnen staat. Vooral heel veel garen van Rico, wat erg prettig spul is. Maar wat me nog het meest verbaasde, is dat 'gewone' winkels, zoals supermarkten en warenhuizen, ook gewoon wol en allerlei knutselmaterialen verkopen. Dan is dat ene rekje met garen bij de Hema toch maar een beetje een aanfluiting. In de plaatselijke supermarkt, gewoon bij mijn vriendin om de hoek, hadden ze zelfs een hele wolhoek.

Also Wolle Rödel was a good place for yarn shopping. Especially a lot of Rico yarn, which I like a lot. But what surprised me the most was that 'normal' shops, like supermarkets and department stores also sell yarn and craft material. In Holland you always really have to search well for craft material and often you have to order things online 'cause you can find what you like in regular shops. I mean, even at my friends' local supermarket around the corner from her house, they had an entire yarn section. A nice surprise. 

En genoeg leuke stoffenwinkels waren er ook. Deze was echter favoriet, met de onuitsprekelijke naam (voor mij althans) Das i-Tuepfelchen. Een hele winkel vol met Amerikaanse designerstoffen, maar ook Tilda en schitterende stoffen van Duitse bodem. Ik heb mijn ogen uitgekeken. En nog belangrijker: de eigenaresse vond het prima dat ik anderhalf uur rondhing en alles op mijn gemakje bekeek.

And lots of great fabric stores as well. This one was my favorite though. It has the (for me unpronouncable) name Das i-Tuepfelchen. And it was a store completely filled with American designer fabric (also really hard to come by in The Netherlands), but also Tilda and great fabric from German designers. What a blast! And the best thing: the owners were so nice and didn't mind at all that I was looking around for about an hour and a half.
